Sanctuary for Independent Media 2018 fall schedule

The upcoming fall season of events at  The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy starts up this month. And, as in past seasons, it includes concerts, talks, screenings, and workshops on topics ranging from Afro-Caribbean music to  jazz to biology to the environment to food to politics.
Here’s a quick-scan look…

September 26: Delgrès
“Delgrés is an Afro-Caribbean roots music trio that pays tribute to the matyred revolutionary Louis Delgrés.” $20
September 29: 8th Annual StoryHarvest 2018 with Rootbrew and special guest Jenny Marie
The annual celebration at Freedom Square with free food, art activities, and music. free admission
October 12: Ladama
“Harnessing music from their respective countries of origin -Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and the United States, the group utilizes traditional and non-traditional instruments from across the Americas, but with a modern twist, to produce Latin Alternative music.” $20
October 18: Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope
“A film screening and panel discussion examining the emerging science around toxic stress and how it negatively alters the brains and bodies of children if left untreated.” free admission
October 25: Vusi Mahlasela at The Egg
“The Sanctuary for Independent Media welcomes acclaimed South African artist Vusi Mahlasela back to the Capital Region with his full band for a concert at The Egg in Albany to benefit WOOC 105.3 FM.” $29.50
November 1: Farming While Black: Book Release
“Join us as we celebrate the release of Leah Penniman’s new book, Farming While Black. The Black Kreyol educator, farmer/peyizan, author, and food justice activist from Soul Fire Farm in Grafton, NY exposes a global network of farmers working to increase farmland stewardship by people of color, restore Afro-indigenous farming practices, and end food apartheid.” $10
November 3: Chris Hedges “America: The Farewell Tour”

November 10: Ornettiquette
“‘Absoloutely Thrilling,’ ‘sonic joyride,’ freewheeling & invigorating’ are how folks are describing Trumpeter Chris Pasin’s reworking of music inspired by free jazz icons Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, and Albert Ayler.” $20
November 14: “Crime and Punishment” with Filmmaker Stephen Maing
“Join us for a screening and discussion of the riveting documentary Crime + Punishment, a film chronicling the struggles of a group of black and Latino whistleblower cops and the young minorities they are pressured to arrest and summons in New York City. Following the screening of the film, will be a discussion with the film’s director Stephen Maing.” $10
November 30: Ronald Kitchen Book Discussion
“Join us in a discussion with Author and Activist Ronald Kitchen, in a discussion of his memoir My Midnight Years: Surviving Jon Burge’s Police Torture Ring and Death Row.” $10
December 8: Ras Moshe
“A multimedia performance of “Peace Be With You: Letters from Rap” with the Music Now! Unit. Theodore Burnett III performs music based on letters written by his father during deployment in Vietnam from 1968-1970.” $20
December 15: 7th Annual North Troy Justice and Peace Holiday Celebration
“Join us at the Sanctuary for the seventh annual North Central Holiday Justice and Peace Celebration. We’ll have free portraits, arts activities, toys for tots, free food from Unity House, Troy Bike Rescue bike give-away, tours of our new NATURE Lab gallery, on-demand typewriter poetry, the lighting of the tree at Freedom Square (at the corner of 101st and 5th/6th Avenue), and more!!” sliding scale donation
