Underground Gallery Exhibition by Nina Berman: “Evidence and Fantasy – Militarism in American Life”

September 26, 2009 December 12, 2009 EDT

Nina Berman is an award-winning documentary photographer based in New York City, widely publicized and exhibited, with a primary interest in the American political and social landscape. Her work examines the influence of war and militarism on American life at this time in our history when so many resources, both human and material, are dedicated to military pursuit. Many of the soldiers Nina met said they thought it would be fun, but their experiences told a different story. She became interested in how as a culture we visualize and fantasize war and what role the burgeoning homeland security state plays in the creation and dissemination of these fantasies. This exhibition featured her series Homeland, Purple Hearts, and Marine Weddings. The exhibition will be on view from September 26th through December 12th, 2009.
