“Nosferatu” Screening with Live Accompaniment by the Andrew Alden Ensemble

October 12, 2012 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm EDT

Many horror film fanatics call Nosferatu (1922), F.W. Murnau’s silent German classic starring Max Schreck–who sports grotesque makeup that transforms him into a symbol of pestilence and decay–the scariest Dracula adaptation ever. The film was shot in the Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania during the early days of film. The chilling tale kicks off when a real estate agent (Gustav von Wangenheim) begins conducting business with eerie Count Orlok (Schreck), who goes on a rampage when he becomes obsessed with the man’s comely wife (Greta Schröder). The new score, performed live by the Andrew Alden Ensemble, compliments the horror of the film and the classic story of Dracula with the sensibilities of chamber music and the distinct edge of rock and roll! The ensemble features: Piano/synthesizer: Andrew Alden; Violin/viola: Beltran Del Campo; Guitar/percussion: Ryan Meyer; Guitar: John Forrestal; Drums: Andy Cantu.  This screening is made possible in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Electronic Media and Film program, volunteer labor, and small financial contributions from thousands of patrons of The Sanctuary for Independent Media.
