“My Country, My Country” with Filmmaker Laura Poitras

October 3, 2006 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm EDT

Working Alone in Iraq over eighteen months, My Country, My Country (2006) Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras creates an extraordinarily intimate portrait of Iraqis living under US occupation. Her principal focus is Dr. Riyadh, an Iraqi medical doctor, father of six and Sunni Political candidate. An outspoken critic of the occupation, he is equally passionate about the need to establish democracy in Iraq, arguing that Sunni participation in the January 2005 elections is essential. Yet all around him, Dr. Riyadh sees only chaos, as his waiting room fills each day with patients suffering the physical and mental effects of ever-increasing violence.  My Country, My Country is a powerful mosaic of daily life in Iraq, and according to the Village Voice it is “the most valuable piece of film to emerge about the war in all of its three years.”

This event is a collaboration with P.O.V. (the acclaimed independent non-fiction film series on PBS), and is presented with Bethlehem Neighbors for Peace and Women Against War.
