Joe Giardullo’s Red Morocco

November 4, 2006 @ 8:00 pm 10:00 pm EST

Formed in 2005 Red Morocco is Joe Giardullo, tenor/soprano sax; Bob Forbes, bass; and Harvey Sorgen, drums. This powerful band features Harvey Sorgen, former longtime drummer with Hot Tuna. Joe and Harvey go back over 30 years together, including a time based in Amsterdam, Holland in the 1970s. Joe Giardullo is a free jazz reed player whose improvisations are microtonal, a style of playing that features other notes than the twelve octaves used in most Western music. His music has been described as an insinuating sound collage. One reviewer described it as having “a dangerous, poisonous beauty,” and that’s where the name comes from–red morocco is the name of a poisonous plant!
