Be The Media! Workshop with Mike Burke: Art of News Production

Mike Burke is a long time producer with the international daily news program Democracy Now!, with years of experience in all aspects of news production.

Join Mike as he shares tips and tricks, processes and strategies, playing DN! excerpts to dissect and discuss. Mike will share techniques for shaping a show to keep audiences engaged. He will review his process scouring the news and condensing texts to write headlines. Finally, Mike will conduct a hands-on lab, focusing on a Hudson Mohawk Magazine local story to share research strategies for investigative journalism.

Burke is a former staff reporter at the Springfield Union News and Greenfield Recorder in Massachusetts where he also helped start and run the Flywheel Community Arts Space, a DIY music and artist space. As a freelance reporter his work has appeared in Punk Planet, Clamor, the Ashville Global Report and Left Turn. In addition to his work on Democracy Now!, he helped found, “The Indypendent”, a monthly social and economic justice newspaper based in New York. 

Be the Media! workshops teach multimedia skills to community members to develop urgently needed independent local voices. Our goal is to empower the public through independent media making, supplying them with the tools to tell their own stories through different mediums of media including radio, video and journalism.
