About Jim de Séve

Jim de Séve is an award-winning documentary producer and director.  His critically acclaimed documentary, Tying the Knot, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was released theatrically in 2004 by Roadside Attractions (Supersize Me, Ladies in Lavender) and has played in over 70 U.S. cities, in 110 festivals and in 21 countries. Tying the Knot has won eleven awards including the $10,000 Grand Prize Best Doc at the 2004 Frameline Film Festival in San Francisco. As the chronicler of America’s new culture war – the divisive battle over marriage – De Sève takes activist filmmaking back to its roots of affecting lasting change, and building a community network through the filmmaker’s vision of social justice. Recently transplanted to Troy, NY from New York City, De Sève has shot and produced work for clients such as Nickelodeon, MTV, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the American Museum of Natural History.  His work has been broadcast on PBS, CBC Canada, FOX Italy, Canal+, HereTV! and others. De Sève’s  documentary, Burying the Saints, is a personal portrait of his eccentric aunts search for lost immigrant history. De Sève was the Director of Photography for Seeds, a documentary about the revolutionary Seeds of Peace summer camp for kids from warring nations.  De Sève has lectured at New York University, the International Documentary Symposium in Montreal, Film/Video Arts in NYC, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, the Tribeca Film Festival, the International Documentary Association and at more than 100h community-based screenings in the US and abroad.  De Sève is a recipient of grants from the Jerome Foundation, the Marcelle Foundation, the Stonewall Community Fund, the Independent Feature Project and the New York State Council on the Arts.
