Artist Hanae Utamura on Nature, Grief, and Life

Hanae Utamura’s series “Presence of Absence” was “born out of the contemplation of a ritual site where placenta, an organ that grows fetus inside the womb before birth, and human remains were buried beneath a European Larch Tree in Prospect Park, Troy, NY.” Hanae speaks about this series and her themes of nature, grief, and life in her artwork with Sina Basila Hickey of Hudson Mohawk Magazine.
