Activities described by youth mentor Ileya du Boulay with contributions from youth fellows Polly, Sumaiya, and Tanajae.
Every Friday the youth fellows have 2 main activities: The Sanctuary Radio and the Collard City Growers Garden. First at the Main space, The Sanctuary of Independent Media, fellows worked with Sina Basila Hickey to record interviews, and aid them in editing. After that, they took a short walk to the Collard City Growers Garden to help A’Livija Mullins-Richard tend to the garden for a few hours!
Week 1: Introductions
Youth fellows learned about the radio space and were taught how to respect and use the space before heading to the garden and getting a thorough tour of the garden! The fellows picked garlic and went to the back shed to set to dry.
Week 2: Interview Sit In and Practice
On the 2nd day of Radio and Garden. During the radio hours youth fellows had an amazing opportunity to sit in on an interview with a local animator that made wonderfully beautiful animations about Upstate New York! After that, they headed to the garden and helped clear out some overgrown paths and fix up some sections for the purposeful plant life.

Week 3: Trip to the Adirondacks
A’Livija took the youth fellows on an amazing trip up to Blue Mountain Lake Museum in the Adirondacks! Fellows and chaperones had a wonderful time exploring the museum and few even managed to get onto the lake itself after a short trail! A thrilling and enlightening day for the fellows.
Week 4: Radio and Garden Work
The students pick peaches and grapes from the garden and help tie the Palestinian gourd leaves to aid its structural growth.
Week 5: Radio and Garden Work
The fellows continue to fulfill tasks in the garden while interacting with wildlife and community members.
Week 6: Final Day Reflections / Celebration
The final day is enjoyed with an accumulative liquid antenna workshop with Natan including computerized editing software to affect the frequency of the sound, followed by a final visit to the grapevine arch in the Collard City Growers Garden.
