Meghan Marohn with Dick Sleeper on the Erie Canal

We are broadcasting on WOOC from The Sanctuary for Independent Media — a block from the Erie Canal, the Federal Dam and its entrance on Bond Street. This year is the bicentennial of the Canal and at the Sanctuary we’ve been exploring its legacy here in North Central. One of the best ways to enjoy the Hudson River in this area is by boat, a vehicle by which you can see the geography of the shores of Troy, Peebles’ Island across the water, and the big canal lift in Waterford. Longtime Troy resident Dick Sleeper is a teacher, boat builder and lifelong sea lover. Hudson Mohawk Magazine correspondent Meghan Marohn joined Dick on his boat “Spiritts” to learn more about the history, culture and ecology of the Hudson, and to see what a boating adventure in Troy is all about.
