Acclaimed Independent Jounalist to Speak at “Scrappin’ Upstate” Event

Date published: 05/12/2011

Well-known journalist and MacArthur genius grant recipient Adrian Nicole LeBlanc will speak Friday at the Sanctuary for Independent Media after the opening reception for an exhibition titled “Scrappin’ Upstate.”

LeBlanc’s talk will focus on the vital role of independent journalism in documenting the lives of those on the margins of society. The talk will take the format of a Q&A, with questions posed by photojournalist Brenda Ann Kenneally, whose work has intersected with LeBlanc’s in the past. LeBlanc wrote the foreword for Kenneally’s book “Money, Power, Respect,” and Kenneally was asked by the New York Times to take photos for a piece by LeBlanc.

Kenneally worked with a group of women from north Troy who call themselves the Upstate Girls to produce the “Scrappin’ Upstate” exhibit, which consists of large-scale prints from the Upstate Girls’ scrapbooks alongside prints from the diaries of young women growing up in Victorian-era Troy.

“Scrappin’ Upstate” runs through June 4, and is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, and one hour before, during and after events.
