Week 7: Rensselaer County Sewage Treatment Plant

On August 9th, youth fellows took a tour of the sewage treatment plant in South Troy with plant manager Charles Remington. We were joined by Riverkeeper Science Director Dr. Shannon Roback, and Water Justice Lab mentors Dr. Jennifer Cardinal and Doug Reed. This visit allowed us to trace our wastewater out of the sewer system in Troy and four miles south along the Hudson River, to see how it gets treated and returned to the river.

Last year, youth fellows recorded ambient sound and an interview with Charles Remmington about the wastewater treatment process. This year, after talking with Dr. Roback during the tour, youth fellows Muzzamil Moate and Aljahraun Wright worked with media mentor Alycia Bacon to interview Dr. Roback her about her work with Riverkeeper and her research on emerging contaminants. This interview will be released soon.
