Week 3: Forensic River Art-Science Workshop

On July 12 2023, Water Justice Lab hosted the workshop Forensic River with artist Isidora (Ipi) Fernandez. NATURE Lab’s first Rubin Family Foundation Artist Resident at NATURE Lab, Ipi was in residence from June 21-July 21 working with the North Troy community and NATURE Lab researchers and fellows.

During her workshop, Ipi connected water testing research happening at NATURE Lab with seeking justice for our local water bodies and the beings who inhabit them. Water Justice Lab fellow Muzzamil Moate, Media Mentor Alÿcia Bacon, NATURE Lab researcher Dr. Sarah Cadieux, and NATURE Lab coordinator Kathy High worked with Ipi to guide participants in hands-on lab activities exploring microplastics, sewage contamination, and macroinvertebrate life in our urban stream, the Piscawenkill (the site of our Week 2 Fieldwork).

Five people examine debris on a white rectangular tray in the NATURE Lab.

After the workshop, Muzzamil and Alycia did an interview with Ipi about the workshop, how she got into citizen science, what she likes about the working at the art-science interface! It’s a great compliment to the Hudson Mohawk Magazine interview Ipi did before the workshop.
