Barrio Alegria

Barrio Alegria came for a two-day visit to The Sanctuary for Independent Media all the way from Reading, PA. Barrio Alegria is a community engagement organization that utilizes the arts to create transformations in individuals to help them transform their communities. Over these two days we compared our organizations, of which there are a lot of similarities, including an in-depth discussion around creative placemaking.

Barrio Alegria sat down for an interview and spoke with visiting Pete Tridish before doing a radio workshop of their own. They also learned about our archive with Carolyn Tennant, spent time in Collard City Growers, made natural pigment at NATURE Lab with Ellie Irons, and had a community meal with some dedicated volunteers. They finished the visit by giving us a salsa lesson in Freedom Square.

Barrio Alegria stands on the Sanctuary front steps, fists raised, and wearing Sanctuary tshirts.
