World Water Prayer in Schoharie County

On August 8, 2026, the Waterfall Unity Alliance in Schoharie County held an interfaith Water Prayer that brought water protectors from numerous First Nations together. Here, the Panther Creek – a tributary of the Schoharie Creek and Mohawk River – is threatened by a proposed fracked gas pipeline, as is the Upper Susquehanna watershed. The Constitution Pipeline was rejected by New York in 2015, but the Trump administration has pushed to re-introduce projects like this in an attempt to break fracking bans and stricter clean air and water acts that states like New York have passed. A Women’s Walk will follow this prayer next month, along the 113 mile route threatened by this project. Organizers Abuela Kunana, Erin Dudley, Bethany Yarrow, Sandra Owén:nakon Deer-Standup of the Kanien’kehá:ka Mohawk Nation, and Owl of the Ramapo Munsee Lenape Nation, spoke with HMM reporter Sal Rochelle in West Fulton NY. Simultaneously, environmental justice activists and indigenous water protectors also held Water Prayers in seventeen other cities, including New York City; Calumet, OK; Utuado, Puerto Rico; Croix la Mision, Haiti; and Nice, France.
