The producer for the short documentary\, “An Indigenous Response to #MeToo” and “Rematriation’s Indigenous Women’s Voices” 9-part series. She is the host for an online talk show for Indigenous women called\, “Pine Tree Talks.” She and her husband\, Neal Powless\, also operate Indigenous Concepts Consulting with the goal of incorporating Indigenous perspectives into the mainstream\, and in existing business and media paradigms. She served as a senior strategist for Blue Stone Strategy Group\, providing economic and governance consulting for Indigenous nations across the country. She has an extensive background in law\, business development\, and consulting. In 1988 he wrote The End of Nature\, the first book for a common audience about global warming. McKibben comes to the Sanctuary for a talk on his latest book\, followed by a Q&A and book signing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur climate\, and our democracy\, are melting down. But Bill McKibben\, one of the first to sound the alarm about the climate crisis\, insists the moment is also full of possibility. Energy from the sun and wind is suddenly the cheapest power on the planet and growing faster than any energy source in history—if we can keep accelerating the pace\, we have a chance. \n\n\n\nHere Comes the Sun tells the story of the sudden spike in power from the sun and wind—and the desperate fight of the fossil fuel industry and their politicians to hold this new power at bay. From the everyday citizens who installed solar panels equal to a third of Pakistan’s electric grid in a year to the world’s sixth-largest economy—California—nearly halving its use of natural gas in the last two years\, Bill McKibben traces the arrival of plentiful\, inexpensive solar energy. And he shows how solar power is more than just a path out of the climate crisis: it is a chance to reorder the world on saner and more humane grounds. He’s gone on to write 20 books\, and his work appears regularly in periodicals from the New Yorker to Rolling Stone. He serves as the Schumann Distinguished Scholar in Environmental Studies at Middlebury College\, as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, and he has won the Gandhi Peace Prize as well as honorary degrees from 20 colleges and universities. He was awarded the Right Livelihood Award\, sometimes called the alternative Nobel\, in the Swedish Parliament. Foreign Policy named him to its inaugural list of the world’s 100 most important global thinkers. \n\n\n\nMcKibben helped found 350.org\, the first global grassroots climate campaign\, which has organized protests on every continent\, including Antarctica\, for climate action. He played a leading role in launching the opposition to big oil pipeline projects like Keystone XL\, and the fossil fuel divestment campaign\, which has become the biggest anti-corporate campaign in history\, with endowments worth more than $40 trillion stepping back from oil\, gas and coal. He stepped down as board chair of 350 in 2015\, and left the board and stepped down from his volunteer role as senior adviser in 2020\, accepting emeritus status. He lives in the mountains above Lake Champlain with his wife\, the writer Sue Halpern\, where he spends as much time as possible outdoors. Together we will collectively read Frederick Douglass’ What to the Slave is the Fourth of July before a conversation on storytelling and the importance of recorded Black history\, featuring speakers from the Underground Railroad Education Center and the Adirondack Experience museum. You will also have the opportunity to contribute memorabilia to the soon-to-be permanent exhibition The Black Experience in the Adirondacks at the Adirondack Experience museum. There will be a hybrid event on February 18 to give insight into the collection in Gathering Stories: Black Experiences in the Adirondacks. \n\n\n\n\n\nFrederick Douglass’ legacy demonstrates the importance of archives. Using speeches\, photography\, and print media\, this man who was born into slavery became one of the most important figures in Black history. Douglass gave speaking tours\, was the most photographed man in America during the 19th century\, and wrote books and published The North Star press. We know so much about him and his experience because of his archive\, and participants will leave a legacy of their own with archive opportunities during this event.  \n\n\n\nAttendees will collectively read Frederick Douglass’ abolitionist speech “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” (which will be recorded and archived in audio and video form followed by a panel discussion which will include the Underground Railroad Education Center as well as Charles Clark III\, the Project Curator for the exhibition The Black Experience in the Adirondacks. The community will then have the opportunity to contribute memorability connected to the Black experience in the Adirondacks to an upcoming exhibition. \n\n\n\n\n\nA portrait of Frederick Douglass created in 1879\n\n\n\n\n\nFeaturing: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLacey Wilson\, Teen Museum Studies Program Manager of Underground Railroad Education CenterLacey was born in Washington DC and has spent 10 years in public history\, leading tours\, managing sites\, and engaging with oral histories and local communities. Today\, she plans and implements a museum studies program for teenagers at the Underground Railroad Education Center in addition to sitting on the advocacy and nominations committees with the National Council of Public History. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaul & Mary Liz Stewart\, Co-Founders of Underground Railroad Education Center (UREC)UREC is a non-profit organization which grew out of a research project on the Underground Railroad in the Capital Region by Paul and Mary Liz Stewart. Their work uncovered the voices and stories of people written out of this history. Together\, these voices provide a different accounting of Underground Railroad activism and change the American narrative. \n\n\n\n\n\nSince its incorporation in 2003\, Underground Railroad Education Center has created a strong program of education and research that celebrates and preserves the story of the Underground Railroad in Albany and the Capital Region and its relationship with us today. URHPCR has identified the key primary and secondary figures and their activities\, and has developed a general outline of the local history of the movement. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCharles Clark III\, curator of The Black Experience in the Adirondacks Charles employs a Pan-Africanist methodology\, enriched by material cultural approach\, to transform exhibition making in museums. His work addresses ethno cultural erasure and brings to light marginalized narratives within art history. His approach not only enhances the representation of diverse voices but also redefines the role of museums as spaces for critical dialogue and cultural exploration. \n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2027\, the Adirondack Experience\, the Museum on Blue Mountain Lake\, will open The Black Experience in the Adirondacks\, a new permanent\, interactive exhibition. This exhibition will comprehensively explore the history of Black people in the region\, from their important and well-documented role in the settlement and development of the Adirondacks to current efforts ensuring an inclusive community and enriching the region’s recreational opportunities. The action of creating these films are themselves performative relationships with the surroundings\, the projection expanding this vision for yet more eyes to see. \n\n\n\nPlant Processing is a collective action— particularly with the methods of Le Ratoire’s performative folk film-making style\, but also with the methodologies of collective making and restraints employed by La Ratoire’s “Asphalt Splendor.” For this film\, the group will set out to make a portrait of “the river that flows both ways\,” or Mahicannittuk in Machican (aka The Hudson River)\, canoeing and camping from Troy to worlds end\, plant processing all along the way with the different plants growing on the shores. \n\n\n\n“Bat Nut\,” is a poetic video document of friends gathering together to clear the locally loved Beaver Pond in Chatham\, NY of the thorny Bat Nut. Other videos will show an exploration of a closed tungsten mine from WWII in Portugal\, processed with the industrially farmed Eucalyptus\, and a turn around a temple outside of Guadalajara\, Mexico which was processed with beer and sage from their surroundings\, and a film stained red from being processed with a certain seaweed\, and more! \n\n\n\nAlternative Film Processing Workshop with Le Ratoire\, 2-6pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLe Ratoire is a filmmaking collective; since 2019\, composed of Léa Lanoë\, Pierre Borel (Labo L’argent\, Marseille\, France)\, Katherine Bauer\, Joyce Lainé\, and Loïc Verdillon (Atelier MTK\, Grenoble\, France). They have elaborated a methodology for collective filmmaking wherein all aspects and stages of the film are made in a single go. Beginning with a constraint (a place\, a theme\, a technical method)\, embrace the unplanned that emerges within the process; the unexpected “failures” that inevitably occur are as important as the constraints that first inspired the process.  The name “Le Ratoire” refers to the verb in French\, rater\, that means “to miss\, fail\, or flunk” and laboratoire\, indicating the analog hand-made laboratory practices employed. Also the idea of a ratery or site for the “lab rat”; in this case we are the rats running tests on ourselves. \n\n\n\nATELIER MTK\, founded in 1992 is the first collective film lab of France. It is an artist-run cinematographic laboratory equipped to work in all aspects of analogue films.  The lab should be considered like a playground. Traditional genres such as cumbia and bullerengue from the Atlantic Coast\, currulaos from the Pacific Coast as well as joropos of the Colombian Eastern Plains are the point of departure for musical creativity. Lucía’s vocal sophistication is enhanced in genres such as herding songs (cantos de vaquería)\, funeral laments (alabaos) and harvest chants (cantos de zafra) which give the singer the liberty to explore her voice fully. His new book\, When Freedom is the Question\, Abolition is the Answer: Reflections on Collective Liberation\, shares reflections that incorporate history\, political theory\, literature\, and his own personal experience within social movements. They come together to offer a radical vision for a more just and equitable world. \n\n\n\nThe book asks these essential questions: What is freedom? How do we get free? Ayers examines the roots of systemic oppression and the concept of freedom in eight essays\, each of which include a writing prompt that encourages readers to engage actively with the topics Ayers explores within: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbolition as a framework: Ayers invites readers to understand abolition as a framework in which not only incarceration\, police violence\, and racial and economic disparities are eliminated\, but a new society built on restorative justice\, mutual aid\, and community solidarity thrives. “Our job\, right here and right now\, is to become today’s abolitionists—reimagining\, resisting\, and rebuilding in the nameof freedom.”Critique of the current system: In When Freedom…\, Ayers critiques our individualistic society. “Extreme individualism is sold to us as ‘human nature\,’” he explains\, “and it has the effect of disarming people in the face of collective problems.” Ayers describes a necessary tension between “me” and “we” where there is temptation to view freedom as one’s own lived experience being the most important. Barbara’s work has been a source of guidance and inspiration to people and movements committed to battling for freedom. From the height of Black-owned farms at 14% in 1910 to less than 2% today. Influenced and inspired by Karen Washington\, a pioneer in urban community gardens in New York City\, and fellow farmer and organizer Blain Snipstal\, Leah galvanizes around farming as the basis of revolutionary justice. \n\n\n\nIn 1910\, Black farmers owned 14 percent of all American farmland. Over the intervening decades\, that number fell below two percent\, the result of racism\, discrimination\, and dispossession. The film chronicles Penniman and two other Black farmers’ efforts to reclaim their agricultural heritage.
