DESCRIPTION:Join us for StoryHarvest–– a festival to celebrate the harvest with music\, food\, and community! Corn will be a source of food\, games\, crafts\, and jokes in this family-friendly celebration with three-time Grammy award winning musician Bill Miller of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans sharing music and stories on his ancestral homeland at Freedom Square.   \n\n\n\nActivities will include corn arts & crafts\, face painting\, and a bicycle-powered mill. Come and play corn hole\, eat corn\, and participate in the CORNy joke open mic. There will also be community resource tables\, tours to the Medicine Garden\, and listening sessions with Lisa Schonberg at her The Insects are Present listening performance.  \n\n\n\nThis is a rain or shine event! Rain location: The Sanctuary main space\, 3361 6th Avenue\, Troy\, 12180 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of our key annual food justice celebrations is “StoryHarvest: From Seed to Table\,” encouraging diverse members of the community to celebrate and connect through music and stories of food. Initiated back in 2012 by food artist Ellie Markovitch\, we invite you to celebrate with us after a three-year hiatus! A KitchenSanctuary workshop ahead of the workshop with Ellie Markovitch\, Amy Halloran\, and Azuré Keahi will provide food for the festival and context around the importance of corn\, one of the few grains native to the Americas\, in Indigenous food and culture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMefxK1s2D0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBill Miller is an award-winning Native American recording artist\, performer\, songwriter\, activist\, painter\, and world-class native flute player. Over the entirety\, Miller has produced over a dozen albums\, received three GRAMMY® Awards\, numerous Native American Music Awards & Association (NAMA) awards (including a “Lifetime Achievement” Award) and led Wisconsin’s La Crosse Symphony Orchestra. Overcoming the hardships felt by the global community in 2020 during the COVID-19 Pandemic\, 2021 finds the living legend living life— stronger with a renewed focus on healing through song\, art\, and speaking — as he prepares to release a fresh EP. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is part of the Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail project\, funded by a National Endowment for the Arts Our Town creative placemaking grant\, connecting Indigenous legacy to an urban nature walk on 6th Avenue. The Eco-Art Trail weaves a journey from Freedom Square on 101st St south to our newest community platform\, NATURE Lab (with Citizen Science Laboratory and People’s Health Sanctuary) and on our growing permaculture forest reaching south to Glen St. \n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail is dedicated to celebrating the sacred Mohican soils we are honored to tend. We are beneficiaries of millennia of human history unfolding in a majestic river valley\, where the land has been nurtured by Indigenous hands and traumatized through industrial development and systemic inequity.  Embedding art\, ancestral history\, culture and local and Indigenous artist presentations\, the trail engages our rich local ecology and the struggle for environmental justice\, while offering settler communities insight into the history and living legacy of Indigenous peoples on these lands. \n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail is located on a block-wide environmental campus in North Central Troy\, near the Northern tip of the Mahicannituck (Hudson) River Estuary—just a few hundred feet from Federal Lock One of the Erie Canal. Part of the river’s historic flood plain and home to significant Mohican cultural sites\, this neighborhood is also one of the poorest in New York State\, with a long history of disinvestment and environmental contamination. The dirty sounds of New Orleans brass drive their sound with some influences including Galactic as well as the Dap Kings. You can also find them fronted by Albany’s own JB!! aka Dirty Moses and singer Dali Soto. Their efforts combined help create a funk/rap show that brings the house down. In January 2019 they released their first album\, ‘Astrobeat’ – now available on vinyl and all streaming platforms! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUnd3rstanding is a three-man Hip-Hop group from Upstate New York featuring Sev Statik\, SES Vth\, and Knowle’ge. Individually\, these artists stand as giants in the realm of underground hip-hop\, but collectively\, they form a powerful group with a mission to entertain\, enlighten and embody what it means to be an emcee. The name Und3rstanding alludes to supreme mathematics and the principles of knowledge\, wisdom\, and understanding – a set of teachings that each of the members have learned from and hold dearly.Founded in 2015\, the members of Und3rstanding had quickly become fans of each other and after performing at several events in the Albany area.  It was Sev Statik who tossed out the idea that they should combine talents and “form like Voltron” into a super lyrical squadron.  Knowle’ge and SES Vth agreed\, and from there they began recruiting the soulful boom-bappington master producer himself\, Deborah’s Son\, to produce their project. Fusing cutting-edge science and age-old puppetry\, DIRT takes audiences on an extravagant journey of discovery into the Great Underneath—revealing the epic alchemy of plants\, the fungi’s dance of mutual delight\, and the microbes’ herculean labors. Fifty minutes in length\, performed by a five- member company\, and featuring live music and a myriad of puppet figures ranging from 12 inches to 12 feet tall\, the show reminds earthly residents of all ages how profoundly essential the ground beneath their feet is. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArm-of-the-Sea Theater’s mission is to inspire wonder\, offer insight\, spark joy and enrich the public imagination. They accomplish their mission through the symbolic visual language of mask and puppet theater. This handmade\, low-tech form of communication is decentralized and locally adapted. It can bridge language barriers and engage people of many ages and walks of life.  \n\n\n\nArm-of-the-Sea was founded in 1982 by Marlena Marallo and Patrick Wadden as an experimental hybrid performance group combining art\, ecology and social action. SUMMARY:Tending the Urban Forest
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the Collard City Growers foodscape and how to care for our arboreal family\, with professional arborists from the More Trees Cooperative. \n\n\n\n***As health experts project we will continue to social distance into 2021\, we’ll plan to wear masks.  \n\n\n\nTrees are amazing creatures. Like a fountain of life\, they provide nourishment\, habitat\, shelter\, materials\, flowers\, colors\, and oxygen. They perform essential services like purifying the air and water. And they do it all for free! Trees on the Sanctuary’s campus produce delicious fruits\, provide food for the chickens and protect them from predators\, help offset the heat island effect of pavement\, and look beautiful year round. Trees can thrive and propagate on their own\, but a little loving tending can make the symbiotic relationship even stronger. \n\n\n\nCollard City Growers is a volunteer-run food justice project where we connect arts and culture to growing a wealth of annuals and perennials including vegetables\, medicinal herbs\, natural dye plants\, grains\, and fruit trees. We share our homegrown harvest at neighborhood events that host hundreds of community members and passersby who come in search of nutrient dense food or “the best lettuce [they’ve] ever tasted.” During off-season\, we share our harvest in the form of preserved greens\, sauerkraut\, pickles\, and hot sauce. \n\n\n\n**Snow date: Sunday\, March 14th.**

DESCRIPTION:An installation to honor personal\, community\, national and global loss\n\n\n\nWe welcome you to visit Freedom Square\, at the corner of 101st St. (where 6th Ave. turns into 5th Ave.) in socially distanced and masked groups of 10 or less\, any time(s) between 1/17-1/20\, to add the names of your beloved dead and/or leave offerings on the Altar in their honor. Please come with your hearts open\, make sure to wear your mask and let’s love each other via this community Altar space. This too is a form of resistance and protest!! \n\n\n\nCheck out this latest television story! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs we continue working to create the more just and equitable world we know is possible\, we recognize the deep need to grieve collectively.  Join us  as we transform Freedom Square to create a community space to express grief\, loss\, generosity and resilience. This participatory installation began in conjunction with our MLK day event “Rise Up: The Struggle Continues…”  and the Nationwide Covid Memorial (1/19/21 at 5:30 pm) for those who have died of Covid\, and is being continued because of popular demand. Community participants continue to visit the altar\, leave messages\, honor loved ones\, and share gifts of food (wrapped for safety) and clothing. \n\n\n\nThe installation includes an Altar for our Ancestors Known and Unknown and for all those who have died longing for justice and freedom.  Stop by to Say their Names\, Share their/your Stories\, Honor your Ancestors/Beloved Dead. Remember to visit in socially distanced and masked groups of 10 or less\,  to add the names of your beloved dead and/or leave offerings on the Altar in their honor.* \n\n\n\n*Altars are sacred spaces formed with intention. A few ideas of what to place on an Altar include: \n\n\n\n      Prayers & wishes      Natural materials (rocks\, leaves\, flowers\, water\, dirt from your motherland)      Pictures (copies are suggested to minimize loss of original precious mementos)      Art\, poetry\, songs\, letters (consider weather-proofing or bring messages and names to write on our flags)      Some BIPOC cultures offer food/ fruits/bread/liquor/tobacco\n\n\n\n(Please individually wrap offerings for safety. Recognizing the reality/impact of addiction\, please leave only small amounts of alcohol.) \n\n\n\nWe would deeply appreciate support of this community altar! \n\n\n\nContact us if you’d like to volunteer or contribute in any way. \n\n\n\nPlease recognize that as you come in and out the area of Freedom Square\, know that many of our neighbors have and continue to experience over-policing and gun violence and might even feel a sense of shame or dissonance from such a visible community holding space.
