FACILITATING THE 10TH UPTOWN SUMMER DURING COVID
How do you run a youth program in the midst of a global pandemic?
This year Uptown Summer participants will split their time into morning sessions of socially distant gardening in Collard City Growers and virtual afternoon sessions learning branding, social media content creation, radio production and technical media skills.
And, for the third consecutive year, a grant from McCarthy Charities is helping make Uptown Summer possible. We are so grateful for support from a local partner led by people who care just as deeply about Troy and our neighborhood as we do.
MORE ABOUT US20
Our 10th year of “Uptown Summer” features 4 weeks of youth empowerment in collaboration with Rensselaer County Summer Youth Employment Program. Uptown Summer 20 offers an exciting creative convergence around social distanced urban gardening, designing a social media campaign and radio production. Key goals include maintaining a safe working environment, balancing physical labor and creative media making to make positive changes in our community.
The daily schedule includes morning sessions in the Collard City Growers gardens and the Sanctuary with a focus on social distance physical labor/work tasks and multimedia production. Afternoon sessions will be virtual, combining two 1-hour lessons plus 8 hours independent production time, with a focus on creating content for our social media campaign and radio production.
Final deliverables include: maintaining our environmental education campus, creating a Sanctuary/ NATURE Lab social media campaign, producing Hudson Mohawk Magazine radio interviews and station IDs for WOOC, and supporting the Peoples Clinic event.
Generative themes continue with Sanctuary Call for Justice in the Time of COVID, Environmental Stewardship and the Struggle for Environmental Justice, plus Stories of Hope in the Pandemic and Fighting Against Racism. Focus will be on creating a social media campaign, radio production, leadership & entrepreneurship.
