Projects that recruit the public are getting more ambitious and diverse, but the field faces some growing pains.

Most people know us as The Sanctuary for Independent Media in North Troy, NY; the official non-profit 501(c)3 is incorporated as Media Alliance. Our mission is to use art and participatory action to promote social and environmental justice and freedom of creative expression.
Join Dear Climate artists Marina Zurkow and Oliver Kellhammer in conversation about climate change. Learn strategies to “Befriend Climate Change,” from international environmental crises to hyper-local challenges such as brownfields, decaying urban neighborhoods, and toxic blight right here in North Troy and the Capital Region!
The Spring 2014 season at The Sanctuary for Independent Media kicked off on March 15th with the Matthew Shipp Trio and concluded on June 7 with the Freedom Festival, featuring the Brooklyn-based Pitchblak Brass Band and Albany’s own Oobleck on the outdoor concert stage at Freedom Square.

Last weekend we had an AWESOME youth media workshop and film festival, as part of the N.Y. Shout Out Youth Media celebration. Huge thanks to everyone who came from near and far, to help make media, share ideas, brainstorm, act, write, edit, volunteer, cook food, and even just to watch and discuss the youth pieces. …
Our “Be the Media” workshop series provides local artists, producers, and citizen journalists with opportunities to acquire and improve the skills necessary for successful and powerful independent media-making.
