Uptown Summer: Community Science Day

With the help of RPI professors and students, the youth collected soil samples from the little league baseball field located near the Sanctuary. The team collectively decided to test the field because of the number of children that participate in activities held there. Next week, the youth will test the soil for lead.

After collecting the soil, our guest speaker, forensic geologist Dave Walker, discussed the dangers of the Norlite facilities. Norlite is an environmental hazard due to the pollution it causes, and the negative health impacts that result for the nearby communities. Following the presentation, Walker demonstrated how to collect industrial dust samples. The youth will be collecting their own samples to see how the Norlite facilities directly impact their neighborhoods.
