Mayor Bill Keeler Talks Norlite Tax Proposal

Cohoes Mayor Bill Keeler is proposing to enact a local law that would tax the income received by Norlite LLC for its treatment and disposal of hazardous waste. The proposal will be discussed at the next scheduled Cohoes Common Council Workshop on Dec. 8. Norlite makes annual property, water and sewer tax payments to the City of Cohoes. In addition, beginning in 2012, Norlite had paid a monthly voluntary contribution totaling $100,000 annually to the City of Cohoes, which went to the General Fund to support basic operations of the city. However, Norlite stopped making those payments in March 2020, having paid a total of $16,667 this year.

The public can attend a workshop on Mayor Keeler’s proposal to tax Norlite’s hazardous waste revenue at a meeting of the Cohoes Common Council on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m., at Cohoes City Hall.

A separate public information session on Norlite cohosted by the City of Cohoes with the DEC will take place Wednesday, Dec. 9. For details and to submit questions, call (518) 357-2075.
