Weasel Walter

Born in 1972 in Rockford, Illinois, Walter is best known to the public as being a very fast and high energy percussionist who fuses together free jazz and black/death/speed metal approaches.  He has a Bachelor’s degree in music composition and some of his major icons are Iannis Xenakis, Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Cecil Taylor.

He is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser who moved to Chicago in 1990 and founded the Flying Luttenbachers in 1991 with Hal Russell.  They toured through the US and Europe.  Walter was a significant musician in the Chicago underground rock and improvised music scenes.

He founded Myopic Books Improvised Music Workshop in 1994 and performed with various artists like Kevin Drumm, Ken Vandermark, Jeb Bishop, and many others.  He moved to Oakland, CA in 2003.  He took a sabbatical from improvising, and in 2005 he made a free jazz ensemble with his own name.  He has also performed with Marshall Allen, John Butcher, Peter Evans, and many, many others.

Mary Halvorson

Mary Halvorson is a guitarist and composer and has been active in New York since 2000 after her studies at Wesleyan University and the New School.  She has her own band, The Mary Halvorson Trio, and she also co-leads a chamber music duo with violist Jessica Pavone and rock duo People, with drummer Kevin Shea.

She also has performed many ensembles with saxophonist and composer Anthony Braxton, Tim Berne, Trevor Dunn, and many others.  Her trio made its debut Dragon’s Head in 2008 and it was very successful, leading critics to call her the most original jazz guitarist in this decade.

Peter Evans

Since 2003, Evans has been a member of the New York musical community.  He moved to the city after graduating from Oberlin Conservatory.  He is currently working in a wide variety of areas like solo performance, chamber orchestras, performance art, free improvised settings, electro acoustic music, and composition.

He has been working to try and break the barriers of his instrument and play with a steady configuration of improvisers.  He is currently in the Peter Evans Quartet, Mostly Other People Do the Killing, Sparks, Carnivalskin, the Language Of, the New York Trumpet Ensemble.

Evans has also performed contemporary notated music with groups like International Contemporary Ensemble, Alarm Will Sound, Continuum, and Ensemble 21.  He continues to perform on piccolo trumpet in Baroque settings.  He has collaborated with Dave Taylor, John Zorn, Taylor Ho Bynum, Perry Robinson, and many others.  He has recently performed in the US, Canada, Europe, the UK, and Southeast Asia.
