Sam

Sam is a Fall 2013 intern at The Sanctuary for Independent Media. She is an English major and Communications minor at The College of Saint Rose. Her duties were to create events on the Sanctuary Facebook page and website, as well as create the pages on the Sanctuary ticket seller website.

In addition to making events, Sam assisted in the creation of an entirely new segment of the website called “People Power.” In this part of the website, she made new stories about almost all of the people and organizations that volunteer and are involved with the Sanctuary. She also wrote up the press releases for the events of the Fall 2013 season, as well as attended some events to help out with the door and café. Sam says that this internship helped her draw the connection of being an English major with media. With all of the stories, descriptions, bios, and press releases she wrote up for The Sanctuary, she believes that being an English major was the right path for her.

Sam enjoyed studying the different bands and performers that came to The Sanctuary as well as writing about them on the website to attract the public. When she first entered college, Sam was unsure of what she wanted to do with her future, but since the internship at the Sanctuary, she would like to go in the direction of social media and public relations, since she enjoyed her time doing this type of work.

“Before I started my internship, I thought the only thing that English majors could do with their degree was either become an author or a librarian. Since my search for an internship, I realized that there is a lot more that could be done with an English degree. I enjoy working with different types of media, and I have realized that there is a need for people who can write and communicate with others in the media world.” – Sam Short
