Rebekah Rice

Rebekah Rice is a farmer at Nine Mile Farm in Delmar, NY, a teacher, and children’s conference coordinator at Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York. She loves to grow and prepare all different types of foods. She has a vision of our neighborhood with fruit growing everywhere, so that we can pick whatever we want to eat, know what it is, and know how to prepare it so that it will be especially delicious.

Rebekah participated in “Food Forest Fridays” during Uptown Summer ’13. She was the coordinator of the eating experience that included harvesting whatever is locally available and making something delicious with it.  The goal was to be as engaged as possible with eating food from the garden.

Over the years, Rebekah has donated her time by designing and volunteering as project coordinator for construction and garden projects in the neighborhood. Rebekah has grown her own plants as well as assisted the neighborhood children in planting their own gardens. Many of these plants have donated to the Collard City Growers. Through Missing Link Ministry, Rebekah has provided free art and sustainability workshops for the neighborhood as part of the “Found Art In North Troy” project that The Sanctuary put together.

At 10 years old, Rebekah and her father planted their first organic garden together and both have been creating gardens and farms ever since. In 2003, she started to blend permaculture practices with farming with her partner, John. Rebekah and the Nine Mile Farm grow delicious organic foods that are both good and good for you. Rebekah has helped The Sanctuary for Independent Media reach out to the community and teach others what it means to grow and prepare healthy foods.
