SUMMARY:Corn Workshops: Community Cooking with Corn
DESCRIPTION:Bring your corn stories\, your corn recipes and your thoughts about corn! Join Amy Halloran\, Azuré Keahi\, and Ellie Markovitch as they cook as a community and make a variety of cornbreads for our annual StoryHarvest later that afternoon. This workshop will take place in person in the kitchen at People’s Health Sanctuary\, which is located on the 2nd floor of NATURE Lab at 3319 6th Ave\, Troy\, NY 12180.   \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\nVolunteer Application\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmy Halloran is a writer and change agent\, working to add social values and economic viability to farms and communities. The author of The New Bread Basket\, her activism for specialty grains and changing emergency feeding programs share a common thread of restoring human values to the work of farming and the act of feeding each other. She is working on a history of herself\, bread\, and Troy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEllie Markovitch is a Lecturer at the University of Maine Department of Communication and Journalism. Her work revolves around media and food literacy. Applying her passion for innovative and sustainable food practices\, she uses food as a starting point for conversations and community building. Her approach draws individuals into engaged visual storytelling that build experiences and engage communities. Born in Brazil\, Ellie spent childhood weekends at her grandparents’ small farm. “There was a story behind everything we did with our food – how it was grown\, harvested\, cooked\, and shared.” Follow her at storycooking.com and @elliemarkovitch. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAzuré Keahi is a mixed race Kanaka ʻŌiwi mother\, grower\, writer\, creator and record keeper continuing the sacred legacy of her ancestors on Mohican soils of Upstate New York. Centering land-based healing\, she offers her values as an islander to post-industrial landscapes through poetry\, plants\, and play.

SUMMARY:StoryHarvest with Stockbridge-Munsee Musician Bill Miller
DESCRIPTION:Join us for StoryHarvest–– a festival to celebrate the harvest with music\, food\, and community! Corn will be a source of food\, games\, crafts\, and jokes in this family-friendly celebration with three-time Grammy award winning musician Bill Miller of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans sharing music and stories on his ancestral homeland at Freedom Square.   \n\n\n\nActivities will include corn arts & crafts\, face painting\, and a bicycle-powered mill. Come and play corn hole\, eat corn\, and participate in the CORNy joke open mic. There will also be community resource tables\, tours to the Medicine Garden\, and listening sessions with Lisa Schonberg at her The Insects are Present listening performance.  \n\n\n\nThis is a rain or shine event! Rain location: The Sanctuary main space\, 3361 6th Avenue\, Troy\, 12180 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of our key annual food justice celebrations is “StoryHarvest: From Seed to Table\,” encouraging diverse members of the community to celebrate and connect through music and stories of food. Initiated back in 2012 by food artist Ellie Markovitch\, we invite you to celebrate with us after a three-year hiatus! A KitchenSanctuary workshop ahead of the workshop with Ellie Markovitch\, Amy Halloran\, and Azuré Keahi will provide food for the festival and context around the importance of corn\, one of the few grains native to the Americas\, in Indigenous food and culture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBill Miller is an award-winning Native American recording artist\, performer\, songwriter\, activist\, painter\, and world-class native flute player. Over the entirety\, Miller has produced over a dozen albums\, received three GRAMMY® Awards\, numerous Native American Music Awards & Association (NAMA) awards (including a “Lifetime Achievement” Award) and led Wisconsin’s La Crosse Symphony Orchestra. Overcoming the hardships felt by the global community in 2020 during the COVID-19 Pandemic\, 2021 finds the living legend living life— stronger with a renewed focus on healing through song\, art\, and speaking — as he prepares to release a fresh EP. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is part of the Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail project\, funded by a National Endowment for the Arts Our Town creative placemaking grant\, connecting Indigenous legacy to an urban nature walk on 6th Avenue. The Eco-Art Trail weaves a journey from Freedom Square on 101st St south to our newest community platform\, NATURE Lab (with Citizen Science Laboratory and People’s Health Sanctuary) and on our growing permaculture forest reaching south to Glen St. \n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail is dedicated to celebrating the sacred Mohican soils we are honored to tend. We are beneficiaries of millennia of human history unfolding in a majestic river valley\, where the land has been nurtured by Indigenous hands and traumatized through industrial development and systemic inequity.  Embedding art\, ancestral history\, culture and local and Indigenous artist presentations\, the trail engages our rich local ecology and the struggle for environmental justice\, while offering settler communities insight into the history and living legacy of Indigenous peoples on these lands. \n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail is located on a block-wide environmental campus in North Central Troy\, near the Northern tip of the Mahicannituck (Hudson) River Estuary—just a few hundred feet from Federal Lock One of the Erie Canal. Part of the river’s historic flood plain and home to significant Mohican cultural sites\, this neighborhood is also one of the poorest in New York State\, with a long history of disinvestment and environmental contamination. The Eco-Art Trail acknowledges these layered histories as we dream and build towards restored biocultural diversity and robust Indigenous futures. \n\n\n\nSubject to change\, last updated in June 2023: Check out our developing schedule of events ranging from summer ’23 through spring ’24.
