SUMMARY:Egyptian Spiritual Jazz with Abu Zeyn
DESCRIPTION:Bass\, clarinet\, and vocal loops weave rhythmic tapestries of original Sufi and Ancient Egyptian spiritual compositions. A portion of proceeds will benefit Palestine and Sudan. \n\n\n\n\nClick Here to Register\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbu Zeyn أبو زين creates rhythmic tapestries by weaving live guitar\, clarinet and vocal loops with soulful improvisation.  He is a child of the Nile River and the Arabian Desert. His ears were raised on the sounds of braying donkeys\, the call to prayer and tuktuk soundsystems.  \n\n\n\nIn his first show at the Sanctuary\, Abu Zeyn will be sharing original hymns inspired by both Sufi and Ancient Egyptian spiritual modalities.  Musically\, these compositions draw from the wells of Classical Arabic Music and Jazz\, both of which are heavily improvisatory.  These compositions are part of a new and evolving body of music that he has performed in NYC and the lower Hudson Valley. This is his first time playing the full set for his local community and likely one of his last performances of the year before he begins the process of recording.

SUMMARY:Resisting Monocultures: Unlawning and Seed Saving
DESCRIPTION:Prepare the way for spring biodiversity by unearthing lawn and collecting seeds with Lawn Lab. This workshop will take place during the weekly CCG open garden hours. \n\n\n\n\nClick Here to Register\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince early 2020\, the lawn south of Collard City Growers garden has gradually evolved into a hybrid lawn-meadow ecosystem as part of the Next Epoch Seed Library’s project “The Lawn (Re)Disturbance Laboratory\,” aka “Lawn Lab.” Each year a little more lawn is pulled up to make way for tough\, locally-adapted wildflowers and native grasses that can survive and thrive in this challenging urban habitat. Join artist Ellie Irons in the satisfying task of unearthing low-diversity lawn grasses and spreading meadow seeds. Participants will also meet and learn about some of the meadow plants living at Lawn Lab\, and help create a seed mix to keep and share locally.  \n\n\n\nWear comfortable work clothes and bring gloves and hand tools if you have them. Tools / gloves will also be available on site.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHudson Mohawk Magazine · Resisting Monocultures: Unlawning and Seed Saving\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEllie Irons is an artist\, educator\, and parent based in current-day Troy\, New York\, where the Mahicannituck and Mohawk Rivers converge. She received an MFA from Hunter College and Phd from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute focused on ecosocial art. She is currently the Co-Director of NATURE Lab at the Sanctuary for Independent Media.

After presenting on her book The Problem with Plastic: How We Can Save Ourselves and Our Planet Before It’s Too Late\, which investigates plastic innovation which has created devastating environmental and public health impacts\, Enck will be joined by Shaunty M of Golden Leaf Books to talk about how to make a bill into law. Enck’s organization Beyond Plastics works on a slew of legislation to reduce the plastic in our environment\, while Shaunty has experience pushing electric vehicle legislation. \n\n\n\n\nClick Here to Register\n\n\n\n\nGolden Leaf Books will supply books for sale. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat if we said that the line between societal advancement and environmental degradation is as thin as a layer of plastic wrap? Once a marvel of modern science\, plastic has become so inextricably woven into our lives that imagining a world without can seem impossible. Over the last 75 years\, plastic has cradled our planet in a synthetic embrace. \n\n\n\n“The Problem with Plastic” critically examines the paradox of this material\, first celebrated for its innovations and now recognized for its devastating environmental and public health impacts. This compelling narrative reveals how plastic pollution contributes to poisoned oceans\, polluted air\, a warming planet\, and overwhelming waste\, particularly affecting marginalized communities\, which bear the brunt of petrochemical pollution. The book highlights the pervasive presence of microplastics in the environment and the human body\, challenging the belief that recycling can solve the crisis. \n\n\n\nIn addition to uncovering environmental racism and debunking industry claims\, “The Problem with Plastic” emphasizes the urgent need for action against plastic’s toxic legacy\, and offers readers practical\, actionable solutions\, including a “household waste audit\,” which empowers readers to track and reduce their own plastic consumption. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Judith Enck\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn\, 2009\, Judith Enck was appointed Regional Administrator of Region 2 of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by President Barack Obama.. She was the longest serving EPA Region 2 Regional Administrator. \n\n\n\nMs. Enck is a Faculty member at Bennington College\, where she teaches classes on plastic pollution. She is founder of Beyond Plastics\, an initiative that works on plastic pollution .
