SUMMARY:“1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture” Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a film screening of “1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture” in collaboration with Collar City Pride and New Breath Spirituality Center. This feature documentary film follows the story of tireless researchers who trace the origins of the anti-gay movement among Christians to a grave mistranslation of the Bible in 1946. This screening will be followed by group discussion. This film is co-sponsorship with Collar City Pride & New Breath Spirituality Center \n\n\n\nJoin us during Pride month for a special documentary viewing of 1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture\, This film shows how one group’s translation of the Bible supported decades of homophobia in many Christian traditions. Stay after the viewing for a short group discussion about the documentary \n\n\n\nAbout this Film\n\n\n\n1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture is a feature documentary that follows the story of tireless researchers who trace the origins of the anti-gay movement among Christians to a grave mistranslation of the Bible in 1946. It chronicles the discovery of never-before-seen archives at Yale University which unveil astonishing new revelations\, and casts significant doubt on any biblical basis for LGBTQIA+ prejudice. Featuring commentary from prominent scholars as well as opposing pastors\, including the personal stories of the film’s creators\, 1946 is at once challenging\, enlightening\, and inspiring. While other documentaries have been successful in their attempt to treat the symptom of homophobia in the church\, 1946 is working to diagnose and treat the disease – Biblical Literalism. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Co-sponsors\n\n\n\nCollar City Pride is Rensselaer County’s only LGBTQIA2S+ based and operating community center hub\, providing services and events to uplift our queer community. \n\n\n\nNew Breath Spirituality Center is a place where we can learn and talk about connecting with God\, spirituality\, and prayer/spiritual practices– as well as try some out for ourselves.

SUMMARY:"North Stars of Emancipation" Book Talk & Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book talk about North Stars of Emancipation: California’s Diverse Food and Farming Movements in Times of Racial Reckoning\, with author Antonio Roman-Alcalá. A panel with local food justice advocates from Soul Fire Farm\, the Radix Center\, and Serenity Solidarity will discuss food movements in the Capital Region. Books will be available for sale by Greenlight Books. \n\n\n\nNorth Stars of Emancipation traces the recent evolution of California’s food movements towards a more liberatory model grounded in diverse radical traditions. Drawing on his work in urban farming\, radical politics\, and academic research\, author Antonio Roman-Alcalá will discuss the themes of his book with local food justice advocates. \n\n\n\nAbout this Book\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow we grow\, harvest\, distribute\, and consume food is bound up with how we use (and abuse) environmental resources\, and how we achieve (or undermine) collective well-being. In North Stars of Emancipation\, Antonio Roman-Alcalá finds in the radical experiments of new food movements the seeds of a world liberated from old\, extractive systems\, where a more equitable way of eating and living is possible. \n\n\n\nThe book traces the transformation of California’s diverse food movements as Black\, Indigenous\, Latinx\, and other people of color have come to play a larger organizational role\, especially at a time of toxic national politics. A new vision now guides these movements\, rooted in the radical traditions of anarchism\, Black radicalism\, and Indigenous resurgence\, yet focused on pragmatic solutions to the problems of market and state. In pursuing a North Star political ideal that rejects capitalism\, colonialism\, and state violence while prioritizing survival\, California’s food movements have achieved greater collaboration among sectors\, workers\, and consumers\, pointing toward a promising future. \n\n\n\n\n\nNorth Stars of Emancipation takes the rare step of analyzing movements as interconnected wholes. From their collective success\, we learn how to move past an untenable present. Published by MIT Press. \n\n\n\nFeatured Guests\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAntonio Roman-Alcalá is an educator\, researcher\, writer\, musician\, and organizer based in California who has worked on sustainable food systems and radical politics for over 20 years. Antonio is currently an Assistant Professor at California State University East Bay teaching Geography and Environmental Studies\, while researching movements for social and environmental justice through agroecology and food sovereignty. His previous efforts include urban farms\, civil society alliances\, activist-researcher networks\, and documentary film-making. \n\n\n\nHudson Mohawk Magazine · Book Talk "North Stars of Emancipation" Coming to the Sanctuary\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmet Vitale-Penniman is a multiracial farmer\, carpenter\, and program leader at Soul Fire Farm. He got an early start with growing and building\, assisting his parents with CSA packing\, youth programs\, and house building. Now\, he leads educational programming\, works with farm team\, and leads AV for the campus. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEricka Williams Rodriguez is an Afro-Indigenous labor and housing organizer\, farmer\, and advocate for incarcerated people and their families. She co-founded Serenity Solidarity\, a Black and Indigenous-led land project in the capital region\, and is developing Mumia House there\, dedicated to political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal. She is a member of New York State Jails Justice Network\, and is motivated by ending colonization and the suffering of her people. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nScott Kellogg is the Educational Director at the Radix Center\, an urban ecological literacy and just sustainabilities advocacy non-profit in Albany\, New York. Radix runs a one-acre farm in the middle of the city that teaches local youth about gardening\, composting\, tree planting\, and river activism. He currently also teaches at Bard College’s Center for Environment and Policy and is Chair of Urban Agriculture for the Albany Sustainability Commission.

SUMMARY:Ear Seed Training
DESCRIPTION:with Albany Community Acupuncture\n\n\n\nLearn how to treat yourself and your community with simple\, effective 5NP for: pain management\, digestive balance\, stress relief\, addiction recovery\, sleep support\, and more. $0-$40 suggested donation. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSimple. Powerful. Balancing. Help anyone feel better right away. Accessible for everyone to learn and practice. Join us for 3 hours of historical and practical education on ear seeds and how you can heal yourself and others with this tiny seed\, the vacarria plant. It is so powerful at removing stagnation and relieving pain in any body system that in Pinyin  it is called Wang Bu Liu Xing – “even the emperor cannot stop us.”  \n\n\n\nAuricular acupuncture and ear seeds stimulate the vagus nerve – our primary pathway to a parasympathetic “rest and digest” state. It is ideal for use in group settings and has been proven effective internationally for addiction\, withdrawal\, emotional regulation\, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). \n\n\n\nThis simple 5 needle protocol was developed first in the 1970s in Hong Kong\, then adopted in the Bronx by the Black Panthers and the Young Lords to treat addiction. The first hour of hour workshop will be focused on watching and discussing segments of a documentary about their work. In recent decades\, Acupuncturists Without Borders and many other on-the-ground justice medicine initiatives primarily employ this protocol for quick\, powerful and accessible community medicine. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitator\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGina Mauro L.Ac (pictured far left) founded Albany Community Acupuncture after her time doing relief work through Acupuncturists Without Borders in Western North Carolina in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in September 2024. Born and raised in the Albany area\, Gina has always felt a strong call to serve the Capital Region community in a meaningful way.

SUMMARY:Be The Media! workshop with Edward George
DESCRIPTION:as part of EMPAC’s TOPOS Festival\n\n\n\nJoin us to learn directly from Edward George\, who has harnessed the power of media to examine and deconstruct the Black experience in its myriad forms from his early work as an independent media activist and a founding member of UK’s Black Audio Film Collective\, to his multi-part radio broadcast The Strangeness of Dub\, to his own performance practice in electronic music groups such as Hallucinator. \n\n\n\n*This event is included in the TOPOS Festival Pass \n\n\n\nEdward George will discuss the trajectory of his work\, the reasons he has used different modes of media for certain projects\, and how the subjects that he explores breathe life into social histories and make complex theory accessible to wider audiences. Drawing from the archive\, George creates a new film that reanimates historical imagery through narration\, sound\, and montage. Accompanied by an evocative score by Seymour Wright and Crystabel Efemena Riley\, Black Atlas unfolds as a meditation on time\, place\, and presence— considering art as a medium of transcendence\, a technology of power\, and an affirmation of a humanist\, anti-racist project. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n5pm: Be The Media! workshop with Edward George\n\n\n\nGuest Bios:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEdward George- writer\, broadcaster\, and founder of Black Audio Film Collective (1982-1998)\, the multimedia duo Flow Motion (1996-present)\, and the electronic music group Hallucinator (1998-present). George wrote and presented the ground-breaking science fiction documentary Last Angel of History (1996)\, and he hosts Sound of Music (Threads Radio)\, Kuduro – Electronic Music of Angola (Counterflows). George’s series The Strangeness of Dub (Morley Radio) dives into reggae\, dub\, versions and versioning\, drawing on critical theory\, social history\, and a deep\, wide cross-genre musical selection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFred Moten is a professor in the Departments of Performance Studies and Comparative Literature at New York University\, where he teaches courses in black studies\, poetics\, and critical theory. He works with lots of social and aesthetic study groups including Stefano Harney & Fred Moten\, the Black Arts Movement School Modality\, Le Mardi Gras Listening Collective\, the Center for Convivial Research and Autonomy\, Moved by the Motion\, the Institute of Physical Sociality and the Harris/Moten Quartet. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are committed to lowering the barriers to access for events at The Sanctuary for Independent Media. \n\n\n\nFor people who are hard of hearing or deaf\, blind or low-vision\, or whose physical limitations can interfere with a satisfying experience\, let us know as soon as possible\, and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.

SUMMARY:Be The Media! Workshop: the Process Behind Choreographing Grief
DESCRIPTION:Get a look behind the performance WAKE\, a celebratory ritual for grief that centers queer\, Filipino life and processes both personal and community loss through a combination of sound\, dance\, and video projection. This workshop is a collaboration with EMPAC with support from iEar Presents! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin composer Micaela Tobin\, choreographer Jay Carlon\, and their team to learn how they draw on personal experience and shared culture to generate interdisciplinary media in performance. Their collaborative project\, WAKE\, is a celebratory ritual for grief that centers queer\, Filipino life and processes both personal and community loss through a combination of sound\, dance\, and video projection. Tobin uses electronics to dissect her vocals\, creating dense sonic worlds that blur opera\, drone\, and noise; Carlon’s visual language stages bodily movement and video projection to mediate between performers\, audience\, and memory. Joining together\, screen video material from the work\, and lead attendees through aspects of their process. \n\n\n\nJust after the hour-long workshop\, hang out with the artists over a bite to eat. The following day\, September 24\, 7PM\, visit EMPAC to experience a live excerpt of the work in progress.  \n\n\n\nThis screening of WAKE footage is presented in partnership with iEAR Presents\, with support from RPI’s Department of Arts and the School of Humanities\, Arts\, and Social Sciences. iEAR Presents and EMPAC programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

SUMMARY:Broken Plastics Open Studio & Mosaic Making
DESCRIPTION:Learn about microplastics pollution and create a mosaic tile from community-gathered plastic waste with artist Nicole Chochrek and Water Justice Lab.  \n\n\n\n\nClick Here to Register\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisit the pop-up outdoor studio of Broken Plastics artist Nicole Chrochrek for some hands-on art-making and education about plastic pollution. For more than a year\, NATURE Lab has hosted one of Nicole’s microplastics recycling bins. This fall Nicole and Water Justice Lab are hosting a series of pop-up workshops so community members can use the collected plastic pieces to make mosaic tiles to be exhibited at Context Collective gallery and The Sanctuary main space gallery in October and November 2026.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNicole Chochrek utilizes visual and performative frameworks to explore contemporary issues and environmental disparities. Her work focuses on the accessibility and digestibility of information\, deep listening\, shared responsibilities\, and the construction of new ways of being together. As an interdisciplinary artist\, Nicole’s work transverses themes such as air quality\, land use\, waste\, and the navigations of a neurodivergent mind. Her process examines our ideas of “correctness” and holds space for possibility.

SUMMARY:Egyptian Spiritual Jazz with Abu Zeyn
DESCRIPTION:Bass\, clarinet\, and vocal loops weave rhythmic tapestries of original Sufi and Ancient Egyptian spiritual compositions. A portion of proceeds will benefit Palestine and Sudan. \n\n\n\n\nClick Here to Register\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbu Zeyn أبو زين creates rhythmic tapestries by weaving live guitar\, clarinet and vocal loops with soulful improvisation.  He is a child of the Nile River and the Arabian Desert. His ears were raised on the sounds of braying donkeys\, the call to prayer and tuktuk soundsystems.  \n\n\n\nIn his first show at the Sanctuary\, Abu Zeyn will be sharing original hymns inspired by both Sufi and Ancient Egyptian spiritual modalities.  Musically\, these compositions draw from the wells of Classical Arabic Music and Jazz\, both of which are heavily improvisatory.  These compositions are part of a new and evolving body of music that he has performed in NYC and the lower Hudson Valley. This is his first time playing the full set for his local community and likely one of his last performances of the year before he begins the process of recording.

SUMMARY:Resisting Monocultures: Unlawning and Seed Saving
DESCRIPTION:Prepare the way for spring biodiversity by unearthing lawn and collecting seeds with Lawn Lab. This workshop will take place during the weekly CCG open garden hours. \n\n\n\n\nClick Here to Register\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince early 2020\, the lawn south of Collard City Growers garden has gradually evolved into a hybrid lawn-meadow ecosystem as part of the Next Epoch Seed Library’s project “The Lawn (Re)Disturbance Laboratory\,” aka “Lawn Lab.” Each year a little more lawn is pulled up to make way for tough\, locally-adapted wildflowers and native grasses that can survive and thrive in this challenging urban habitat. Join artist Ellie Irons in the satisfying task of unearthing low-diversity lawn grasses and spreading meadow seeds. Participants will also meet and learn about some of the meadow plants living at Lawn Lab\, and help create a seed mix to keep and share locally.  \n\n\n\nWear comfortable work clothes and bring gloves and hand tools if you have them.
