DESCRIPTION:PHS is excited to begin hosting regular Community Acupuncture on most Friday afternoons in the fall.  Community acupuncture is a grassroots technique developed to offer the healing benefits of acupuncture at an accessible cost as well as coupled with the benefit of healing in community.  Folks can sign up ahead of time or walk in!   \n\n\n\nSessions are spaced every 15 mins and usually last about an hour. Please only register if you are sure you can make it\, holding spots doesn’t allow others to sign up. Contact fxcoughlin@gmail.com to if you need to cancel. \n\n\n\n\nRegister for Community Acupuncture\n\n\n\n\n\nYou will be seated in a cozy lounge chair\, in a large semi-circle with up to 4 other people. \n\n\n\nYou will be seated in a cozy lounge chair\, in a large semi-circle with up to 4 other people.\n\n\n\nThe acupuncturist will ask a few simple questions about your health\, then place appropriate needles in your arms\, legs and ear.  People find it quite relaxing and often take a nap!\n\n\n\nAcupuncture is a subtle healing energy and best works with 3-4 visits over the space of one to two months.\n\n\n\nPlease wear comfy clothes that can easily be pulled above your elbows and knees. If you often get cold\, please bring a blanket. And drink plenty of water.\n\n\n\nWe are asking for sliding scale donations to make these sessions sustainable. Please plan to donate between $20-40 per session\, these go to cover costs\, provide a stipend for the acupuncture team\, and take care of the space. If you are able to donate more\, it will help cover costs for someone else. If you are unable to donate\, please come for healing regardless\, no one will be turned away. You can send money via venmo to @ HAC NE (please put CAP in comments)\, Paypal at fxcoughlin@gmail.com\, or cash at the session.\n\n\n\nAcupuncture will be performed by Xavier\, a NYS certified physician-acupuncturist. He was trained in a Japanese style formulated by Kiko Matsumoto through the Acumed program.\n\n\n\n\nWhat is Acupuncture\n\n\n\nJohn Hopkins Medicine writes\, acupuncture is the practice of penetrating the skin with thin\, solid\, metallic needles which are then activated through gentle and specific movements of the practitioner’s hands or with electrical stimulation.  \n\n\n\nAcupuncture is part of the ancient practice of Traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe the human body has more than 2\,000 acupuncture points connected by pathways or meridians. These pathways create an energy flow (Qi\, pronounced “chee”) through the body that is responsible for overall health. Disruption of the energy flow can cause disease. By applying acupuncture to certain points\, it is thought to improve the flow of Qi\, thereby improving health. Read more \n\n\n\nMore about community acupuncture\n\n\n\nCommunity acupuncture is a grassroots model designed to increase access to acupuncture. It is done in a group setting\, mainly using points mainly in your hands\, feet\, and ears.  In the US\, specifically at the Lincoln Hospital Detox Program in the Bronx\, the practice was brought over in the 70’s from China by Black Panther and Young Lord activists.  It has been refined and spread through the work of the Peoples Organization of Community Acupuncture (POCA).

Barbara’s work has been a source of guidance and inspiration to people and movements committed to battling for freedom. DESCRIPTION:Air Justice Lab and Clean Air Capital Region are hosting a workshop to build a Corsi-Rosenthal Box (DIY air purifier) while discussing air quality issues and the intersections of environmental\, health\, and disability justice.  \n\n\n\nUnhealthy air quality got you down? Want to slow the spread of viruses over the holidays? Join us to build a Corsi-Rosenthal box! We will supply building materials and guide you through the construction. Come solo or bring a friend! \n\n\n\nAt this workshop\, we will work together to build DIY air purifiers using a box fan\, a furnace filter\, and cardboard! We will be able to supply free materials for up to 12 builds. Items will be supplied in order of first registered for the event. \n\n\n\nRegistration for this limited event is FULL.High quality masks/respirators (such as N95s) will be required and provided for all attendees. \n\n\n\nClean Air Capital Region is a mutual aid project that is hosted by the Sanctuary for Independent Media. Donations will support the Sanctuary so they can continue to offer community events like this one. \n\n\n\nAccess info:\n\n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary and upstairs bathroom are wheelchair accessible. DESCRIPTION:Chris Hedges will return to the Sanctuary for Independent Media to give the talk “Normalizing Genocide and the New World Order” which asks how the world has changed since the genocide began\, how we navigate a world without rules or humanitarian law and how the genocidal violence perpetuated by the Global North\, especially as the climate crisis deepens\, will be turned with ever more frequency on the peoples of the Global South. \n\n\n\n\n\nChris Hedges\, the former Middle East Bureau Chief for The New York Times\, is a Pulitzer-prize winning reporter and Arabic speaker. He spent 7 years covering the conflict between Israel and Palestine. He is the author of numerous books including the New York Times bestsellers War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning\, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America and Days of Destruction\, Days of Revolt\, which he co-authored with the cartoonist Joe Sacco. He has taught at Columbia University\, New York University\, Princeton University\, and the University of Toronto. He has also taught students in the college degree program offered by Rutgers University in the New Jersey prison system for a decade\, the subject of his book Our Class: Trauma and Transformation in an American Prison. Founder and owner of Underground Alchemy\, she has been making herbal remedies grown on what were vacant lots in Albany’s South End since 2011. Her work is driven by a desire to connect people and plants\, support community health and empowerment\, and position herbalism in the struggle for accessible healthcare. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis series is facilitated by herbalists affiliated with the People’s Health Sanctuary Community Apothecary who are volunteering their time and sharing information for educational purposes. Air Justice Lab and Capital Region Clean Air are collaborating for this DIY workshop with enough materials for up to 12 builds!  \n\n\n\nRegistration is REQUIRED for this limited capacity event\, with priority to the immediate neighborhood. DESCRIPTION:Join us for Lucía Pulido Quartet in concert\, performing Colombian and Latin American songs\, infusing Afro-Colombian\, Mexican\, Venezuelan folk sounds with experimental arrangements. Lucía Pulido is a torrent of sound and emotion that mesmerizes with its energy and captivates with its sensibility. Spanish flyer below. \n\n\n\n*Tickets are priced at $30 for General Admission and $20 for Sustainer\, Student\, or Low-Income Admission. Details below \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHear some of Lucía Pulido’s music here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Lucía Pulido ensemble pays homage to Colombian music through a highly experimental style. Traditional genres such as cumbia and bullerengue from the Atlantic Coast\, currulaos from the Pacific Coast as well as joropos of the Colombian Eastern Plains are the point of departure for musical creativity. Lucía’s vocal sophistication is enhanced in genres such as herding songs (cantos de vaquería)\, funeral laments (alabaos) and harvest chants (cantos de zafra) which give the singer the liberty to explore her voice fully. The ensemble also performs songs written for Lucía by composers Iván Benavides and Sebastián Cruz. \n\n\n\nThe quartet\, comprised of guitar\, bass\, drums\, and voice\, generates a unique sound\, allowing each member to explore their instruments\, and making each presentation an incomparable and entertaining experience.
