DESCRIPTION:Hudson Mohawk Magazine (HMM) is radio for the community\, by community volunteers. If you are curious about the radio and have questions\, if you’re interested in getting involved\, or if you need some support in production\, these open hours are a perfect time to come to the main Sanctuary space to work directly with HMM producers.  \n\n\n\n3:00-5:00pm: drop by to ask questions\, get help\, use the radio studio5:00-6:00pm: work with the hosts to get Hudson Mohawk Magazine ready for the air6:00-7:00pm: sit in the studio and watch the live recording and airing7:07-8:30pm: join the weekly hybrid programming meeting where the schedule for the week ahead is put together by an incredible team of volunteers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur volunteer HMM producers come with a range of skills and experiences. Many volunteers join with little to no experience. These sessions give support to producers of all levels. This is also an opportunity to train new engineers and hosts.  \n\n\n\nJoin our excellent team of grassroots journalists and report on local stories that interest you. He has taught at Columbia University\, New York University\, Princeton University\, and the University of Toronto. SUMMARY:Old Growth Playback: Four new sound works by Lisa Schonberg
DESCRIPTION:with Nina Isabelle & Brian McCorkle\, 5 objects\, piano\, and percussion\n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening of sound works by Lisa Schonberg\, and Nina Isabelle with Brian McCorkle. \n\n\n\nLisa Schonberg will be presenting a body of 4 new spatialized sound works that are the culmination of Old Growth Playback\, which asks us how we can listen in the present to speculate about future old growth soundscapes and our role in them. This work began in the forests of Oregon at HJ Andrews Experimental Forest (HJA) in 2018\, and has evolved in the urban ecosystems of Troy\, New York. Lisa’s compositions focus on cryptic sounds beyond the limits of typical human hearing ability without the use of technology; so that through this focus\, we might consider non-human listening positions and perspectives. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLisa Schonberg is a composer\, percussionist and ecological sound artist. Her recent work includes investigations of ant acoustics in tropical forests\, Hawaiian endangered bees\, insects and human technology\, and fungi. She is a PhD candidate in Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  \n\n\n\n\n\nMediaSanctuary · Old Growth Playback with Lisa Schonberg\n\n\n\nNina and Brian’s performance combines improvisational piano with an experimental percussion process that uses five shapes (five-pointed star\, square\, triangle\, line segment\, and a single point) to determine patterns of action inspired by somatic memories encoded through dance training\, skateboarding\, and trampoline. The structure considers speaker placement\, room dimensions\, and materials as a way to demonstrate an intuitive interpretation of the psychoacoustic phenomena of apparent source width and attempts to conjure LEV\, the entity of listener envelopment. \n\n\n\nNina Isabelle is an artist researching the hidden layers of Process Art. She makes art as inquiry into how sensory perception\, memory\, and motive inform the decision-making processes used to construct meaning in art and life. \n\n\n\nBrian McCorkle is a composer\, performer\, and digital artist in Hurley\, NY. He studied jazz piano with the late Geri Allen and performs regularly as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist \n\n\n\nOld Growth Playback is made possible\, in part\, by the New York State Council on the Artswith the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York StateLegislature through the Media Arts Assistance Fund\, a regrant partnership ofNYSCA and Wave Farm. This work has also been supported by HJ Andrews Experimental Forest and The Spring Creek Project at Oregon State University\, and is presented in partnership with The Sanctuary for Independent Media\, NATURE Lab\, Hudson Mohawk Magazine\, and Publication Studio Hudson.

DESCRIPTION:PHS is offering the first People’s Health Community Acupuncture as part of our Healing Days.  Community acupuncture is a grassroots model to increase access to acupuncture. It is done in a group setting (about 5 people at a time) in comfortable recliners and uses points mainly in your hands and feet.   \n\n\n\nThis is our first session\, the last appointment of the day is at 3:10p. Walk-ins are welcome\, if there is space. Please wear comfy clothes and drink plenty of water!  Acupuncture will be performed by Xavier\, a NYS certified physician-acupuncturist. He was trained in a Japanese style formulated by Kiko Matsumoto through the Acumed program. \n\n\n\n\nSign up here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is acupuncture?\n\n\n\nJohn Hopkins Medicine writes\, acupuncture is the practice of penetrating the skin with thin\, solid\, metallic needles which are then activated through gentle and specific movements of the practitioner’s hands or with electrical stimulation.  \n\n\n\nAcupuncture is part of the ancient practice of Traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe the human body has more than 2\,000 acupuncture points connected by pathways or meridians. These pathways create an energy flow (Qi\, pronounced “chee”) through the body that is responsible for overall health. Disruption of the energy flow can cause disease. By applying acupuncture to certain points\, it is thought to improve the flow of Qi\, thereby improving health. Read more \n\n\n\nMore about community acupuncture\n\n\n\nCommunity acupuncture is a grassroots model designed to increase access to acupuncture. It is done in a group setting\, mainly using points mainly in your hands\, feet\, and ears.  In the US\, specifically at the Lincoln Hospital Detox Program in the Bronx\, the practice was brought over in the 70’s from China by Black Panther and Young Lord activists.  It has been refined and spread through the work of the Peoples Organization of Community Acupuncture (POCA).

She interweaves critical listening practices with acoustic ecology\, improvisation and technology to craft immersive sound engagements and creative research sites that question circulations of power within human and nonhuman systems. As an electroacoustic flutist and sound artist she’s performed and exhibited internationally\, has a large discography\, with releases on Columbia Records\, Beggars Banquet\, Geffin\, V2\, and her research has been published in journals and edited volumes. Thorpe has been granted several residencies and awards for her artistry and research\, such as the Frog Peak Collective Award for innovative research in technology\, a Gold Record from the Recording Industry Association of Americas\, as well as grants from the MAP Fund\, NYSCA\, New Music USA and Harvestworks Digital Media Foundation. Thorpe holds an MFA in Electronic Music & Media from Mills College\, a Ph.D. in Integrative Studies from the University of California\, San Diego\, and is a certified Deep Listening Instructor\, having studied in depth with pioneering composer and Deep Listening Founder Pauline Oliveros. Most recently she was a Mellon Fellow and member of the Society of Fellows at Columbia University\, and is currently Assistant Professor of Sound Studies at Manhattan College. She also remains a co-founder and director of TECHNE\, a nonprofit arts-education organization dedicated to dismantling social and cultural barriers in technical learning environments.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStephanie Rothenberg’s interdisciplinary art draws from digital culture\, science and economics to explore symbiotic relationships between human designed systems and biological ecosystems. Moving between real and virtual spaces\, she engages a variety of media platforms that include interactive installation\, drawing\, sculpture\, video and performance. She has exhibited internationally in venues and festivals including MassMOCA (US)\, Sundance Film Festival (US)\, House of Electronic Arts / HeK (CH)\, LABoral (ES)\, Transmediale (DE)\, and ZKM Center for Art & Media (DE). She has received awards from Harpo Foundation\, NYSCA and Creative Capital among others and has participated in numerous residencies including Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace/LMCC and Eyebeam Art and Technology Center in NYC\, Santa Fe Art Institute\, and ZK/U in Berlin. Her work is in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art and has been widely reviewed including Artforum\, Artnet\, The Brooklyn Rail and Hyperallergic. Adriana has been invited to perform with the most representative groups of son jarocho\, such as Zacamandú\, Mono Blanco\, Chuchumbé and Tembembe. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRaquel Palacios – Jarana\n\n\n\nA distinguished singer and “jaranera”\, born into one of the most respected dynasties of son jarocho music: the Vega family. Native of Boca de San Miguel\, Tlacotalpan\, Veracruz\, she has lent her unique voice and talent to diverse musical projects such as Los Utrera and Son de Madera\, and she has collaborated with Jorge Drexler\, Ernesto Anaya and Geo Meneses\, amongst other artists. In 2012\, Raquel\, alongside her family\, received the National Prize of Sciences and Arts for the cultural contributions of the Vega and Utrera families. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVioleta Romero – Jarana & Dance\n\n\n\nBorn in Mexico City\, she began her formation in music and dance from an early age\, studying in Mexico\, Guinea\, Canada and the United States. Violeta is known for her dance style that is both powerful and elegant. Over the years\, she has formed part of bands such as Tamakán\, Maíz Negro and Los Utrera. Currently\, she is a cultural producer\, band member of Caña Dulce y Caña Brava since 2013\, and cast member in Pachuquísmo (dance project based in San Francisco\, CA\, USA). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnna Arismendez – Leona\n\n\n\nMexican descent who was born and raised in Austin\, TX\, USA. Ana encountered son jarocho for the first time in 2010. Since then\, she has been an avid student of the tradition\, participating in fandangos\, and learning directly from different maestros and collectives. With persistence\, she embraced the guitarra grande (also called “leona”)\, a bass instrument not commonly played by women\, that she plays with charm and strength. Anna currently lives in Mexico City and has been a member of Caña Dulce y Caña Brava since 2016. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlonso Borja – Requinto\n\n\n\nAlonso joined the band in 2023\, but has been an active member of the Mexican music tradition since 1996\, when he founded “Chéjere”\, a widely recognized band mixing tradition with innovation\, who has performed at national and international festivals. With a major in classical guitar studies\, he has been a member of the Mexican National System of Creators since 2019\, and has received awards for his compositions\, such as the Ibermúsicas popular song composition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe zapateado (percussive dance) on the tarima (wooden platform) accentuates the beat\, while the band’s colorful wardrobe embellishes their musicality. Appealing instrumental landscapes include the captivating vibrations of the horse jaw\, the profound and mystical harmonies of the harp\, the percussive atmosphere created by the jarana\, the robust rhythm of the guitarra grande\, and the renaissance-sounding bowed instruments created ex profeso for the group\, resurrecting extinct baroque instrumentation.

DESCRIPTION:“Spaces of Exception” is a film profiling American Indian reservations alongside Palestinian refugee camps. Join us for a Be The Media! workshop with co-director Matt Peterson prior to the screening of “Spaces of Exception\,” to learn about the process of creating a long-term media project. \n\n\n\n“Spaces of Exception” was filmed from 2014 to 2017 in Arizona\, New Mexico\, New York and South Dakota as well as Lebanon and the West Bank. SUMMARY:"The Black Woods" Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join author Amy Godine for a book talk on her most recent work\, The Black Woods: Pursuing Racial Justice on the Adirondack Frontier. The presentation will be followed by an audience Q&A.  \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Black Woods: Pursuing Racial Justice on the Adirondack Frontier (2023\, Cornell University Press) chronicles the dramatic history of Black pioneers in New York’s northern wilderness. From the 1840s into the 1860s\, they migrated to the Adirondacks to build farms and to vote. On their new land they could hope to meet the $250 property requirement New York imposed on Black prospective voters in 1821\, and gain a cherished right of citizenship\, the ballot. \n\n\n\nIn 1846 and ’47\, three thousand Black New Yorkers were gifted with 120\,000 acres of Adirondack land by Gerrit Smith\, an upstate abolitionist and heir to an immense land fortune. Smith’s suffrage-minded plan was endorsed by Frederick Douglass and New York’s leading Black abolitionists. The antislavery reformer John Brown was such an advocate that in 1849 he moved his family to Timbuctoo\, a new Black neighborhood in the woods. \n\n\n\nSmith’s plan was prescient\, anticipating Black suffrage reform\, affirmative action\, environmental distributive justice\, and community-based racial equity more than a century before these were points of public policy. But when the response to Smith’s offer fell radically short of his high hopes\, Smith’s zeal cooled. Timbuctoo\, Freemen’s Home\, Blacksville\, and other Black enclaves were forgotten. Local and regional historians would marginalize the Black experience for 150 years. In The Black Woods\, Godine retrieves the robust story of Black pioneers who carved from the wilderness a future for their families and their civic rights. With stirring stories from archival sources\, Amy Godine returns these trailblazers and their descendants to their rightful place in the Adirondack narrative. This recovery is long overdue.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho is Amy Godine?\n\n\n\nAmy is a writer\, curator\, and lecturer with a longstanding interest in the social history of the Adirondack region. She has been writing articles and speaking about social trends\, marginalized communities\, and ethnic and Black neighborhoods in this high corner of New York since 1988. What do these pieces have in common beyond their focus on this region? One way or another\, they aim to challenge or confound entrenched ideas about Adirondack exceptionalism\, and reach for the guy lines that lash the region to the wider\, fractious world beyond. Miners’ strikes\, eastern European peddlers\, Klan rallies\, Spanish road workers\, the pseudo-science of eugenics and its impact on the early conservation movement\, suffrage activism\, and Black pioneers – her’s is not the Adirondack Country dear to Park historians\, nature writers or antiquarians. Amy goes for something else.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at NATURE Lab for DE-FENCE Part 2: The Line Becomes a Territory with Margaretha Haughwout\, who will lead participants in the creation of DE-FENCE\, a living participatory art installation at NATURE Lab under the umbrella of the Sanctuary’s growing Eco-Art Trail. \n\n\n\nFor part 2 of DE-FENCE\, participants will help install deconstructed fence posts (specially carved with designs that emerge from ongoing community drawing exercises)\, and plant medicinal seeds and seedlings from the artist’s Food Forest Studio. We will continue to discover already existing medicinal plants growing in the marginal spaces and edge conditions of the neighborhood\, discuss neighborhood environmental health conditions\, and discuss the ways that marginal medicinal plants can participate in the bioremediation and protection of the ecosocial communities around NATURE Lab. “The Line Becomes a Territory” is the header from a section in a forthcoming book entitled Ruderal Witchcraft by Margaretha\, co-written with Oliver Kellhammer\, and explores the ways that communities who want to resist the forces of capitalist accumulation can find power in\, occupy\, and expand the boundaries\, edge zones and fence-lines established by regimes of private property.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore about Margaretha Haughwout\n\n\n\n\n\nMargaretha Haughwout works with humans\, and the more-than-human\, across technologies and ecologies\, to cultivate a radical imagination that challenges proprietary regimes\, colonial temporalities\, and capitalist forms of labor. Her work manifests as speculative fabulation\, intervention\, participatory event\, walking tour\, experimental pedagogy\, installation\, and biological processes. Haughwout’s active collaborations include the Coven Intelligence Program\, with efrén cruz cortés\, the Guerrilla Grafters\, and Ruderal Witchcraft with Oliver Kellhammer. DESCRIPTION:Join media artist Theo Jean Cuthand for a Be The Media! participatory radio workshop\, to focus on Indigiqueer and ecological issues.  \n\n\n\nUsing improvisational documentary techniques\, the Be The Media! workshop participants will create a short radio play with Theo Jean Cuthand\, loosely inspired by Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds broadcast but based on the colonization of what is now Troy by European Settlers. This workshop will begin with a brief presentation of Cuthand’s work.  \n\n\n\nCuthand’s Sanctuary presentation is sponsored by iEAR Presents\, with NYSCA\, the School of Humanities and EMPAC at RPI\, and the NEA Our Town creative placemaking project Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail\, which connects Indigenous legacy with environmental justice (in partnership with the Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians). The participatory radio play created in this workshop will be featured as a multimedia element on the Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail.  \n\n\n\nHear Theo Jean Cuthand interview with Hudson Mohawk Magazine\n\n\n\nHudson Mohawk Magazine · Participatory Radio Workshop Based on Welles' "War of the Worlds"\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheo Jean Cuthand was born in Regina\, Saskatchewan\, Canada in 1978\, and grew up in Saskatoon. Since 1995 he has been making short experimental videos and films about sexuality\, madness\, Queer identity and love\, and gender and Indigeneity\, which have screened in festivals internationally. \n\n\n\nHis work has also exhibited at galleries including the MOMA in NYC\, The National Gallery in Ottawa\, and The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. He completed his BFA majoring in Film and Video at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2005\, and his Masters of Arts in Media Production at Toronto Metropolitan University in 2015. He has also written three feature screenplays and has performed at Live At The End Of The Century in Vancouver\, Queer City Cinema’s Performatorium in Regina\, and 7a*11d in Toronto. In 2017 he won the Hnatyshyn Foundation’s REVEAL Indigenous Art Award. He is a Whitney Biennial 2019 artist. He is of Plains Cree and Scots descent\, a member of Little Pine First Nation\, and currently resides in Toronto\, Canada. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis is the second night of a series of two events in a collaboration between the Arts Department and EMPAC at RPI\, by Plains Cree and Scots artist Theo Jean Cuthand. At EMPAC on May 29\, Cuthand presents an artist talk and screening that explores his work and process through an Indigiqueer lens. As an advocate for Native equity and parity\, Davids places Native voices front and center. He originated and co-founded the award-winning Native American Composer Apprentice Project (NACAP)\, championing indigenous youth to compose their own written music. He uses indigenous instruments\, including handmade quartz flutes\, and pens performable notations that are themselves visual works of art. Davids is co-director of the Lenape Center in Manhattan\, and is enrolled in the Stockbridge-Munsee Community.
