SUMMARY:Gathering Stories: Black Experiences in the Adirondacks
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hybrid session to learn about the importance of the Black archive and how you can contribute to the collection for The Black Experience in the Adirondacks\, a 2027 new permanent\, interactive exhibition at the Adirondack Experience\, the Museum on Blue Mountain Lake. Curator Charles Clark III will be at the Sanctuary to present about how your objects help to tell the full story of Black life in the Adirondacks. Join us in person or over zoom\, link will be set out with registration.  \n\n\n\nIn preparation for a landmark exhibition opening in 2027 on The Black Experience in the Adirondacks\, the Adirondack Experience is hosting collecting events around New York State\, including at The Sanctuary for Independent Media on February 18 & 28. The hybrid event on February 18th will be an opportunity to learn about the collection from curator Charles Clark III as well as a drop-off event for folks with physical contributions. February 28th is the event Frederick Douglass and the Power of the Black Archive: A Community Reading of “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” and Collecting Black Experiences in the Adirondacks.  \n\n\n\nYour objects tell the full story of Black life in the Adirondacks. The Black Experience in the Adirondacks is seeking a wide range of materials\, including photographs\, souvenirs\, letters\, postcards\, recipes\, clothing\, and video clips from the Adirondacks. Any object or memory that holds a piece of the story is a vital piece of this history. Help your story be told by being a part of this upcoming exhibit! \n\n\n\nCan’t make it but have something to contribute? Fill out this online form.  \n\n\n\n\n\nCommemorative Metal:Roland Brown Sr. received the Congressional Gold Medal for his service in WW II. On June 25\, 2011\, Dr. Roland M. Brown\, Jr. donated his father’s medal to the Adirondack Experience.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Closet: In 1957\, a 17 year old Fulton Fryar was the first African-American to sing at the Seagle Music Colony. Today\, the Adirondack Experience exhibits his segregated housing as a historical reminder of racial inequality in the Adirondacks during the 50s.\n\n\n\n\n\nLake George Study: This landscape painting by Takeyce Walter is an example of a style of painting called en plein air. Takeyce’s work is currently on display in the Artists & Inspiration in the Wild exhibit\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCharles Clark III\, curator of The Black Experience in the Adirondacks  Charles employs a Pan-Africanist methodology\, enriched by material cultural approach\, to transform exhibition making in museums. His work addresses ethno cultural erasure and brings to light marginalized narratives within art history. SUMMARY:Frederick Douglass and the Power of the Black Archives
DESCRIPTION:A community reading of “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” and collecting for the Black Experience in the Adirondacks\n\n\n\nJoin us in creating Black history archives in a community reading\, discussion\, and collection. Together we will collectively read Frederick Douglass’ What to the Slave is the Fourth of July before a conversation on storytelling and the importance of recorded Black history\, featuring speakers from the Underground Railroad Education Center and the Adirondack Experience museum. You will also have the opportunity to contribute memorabilia to the soon-to-be permanent exhibition The Black Experience in the Adirondacks at the Adirondack Experience museum. There will be a hybrid event on February 18 to give insight into the collection in Gathering Stories: Black Experiences in the Adirondacks. \n\n\n\n\n\nFrederick Douglass’ legacy demonstrates the importance of archives. Using speeches\, photography\, and print media\, this man who was born into slavery became one of the most important figures in Black history. Douglass gave speaking tours\, was the most photographed man in America during the 19th century\, and wrote books and published The North Star press. We know so much about him and his experience because of his archive\, and participants will leave a legacy of their own with archive opportunities during this event.  \n\n\n\nAttendees will collectively read Frederick Douglass’ abolitionist speech “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” (which will be recorded and archived in audio and video form followed by a panel discussion which will include the Underground Railroad Education Center as well as Charles Clark III\, the Project Curator for the exhibition The Black Experience in the Adirondacks. The community will then have the opportunity to contribute memorability connected to the Black experience in the Adirondacks to an upcoming exhibition. \n\n\n\n\n\nA portrait of Frederick Douglass created in 1879\n\n\n\n\n\nFeaturing: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLacey Wilson\, Teen Museum Studies Program Manager of Underground Railroad Education CenterLacey was born in Washington DC and has spent 10 years in public history\, leading tours\, managing sites\, and engaging with oral histories and local communities. Today\, she plans and implements a museum studies program for teenagers at the Underground Railroad Education Center in addition to sitting on the advocacy and nominations committees with the National Council of Public History. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaul & Mary Liz Stewart\, Co-Founders of Underground Railroad Education Center (UREC)UREC is a non-profit organization which grew out of a research project on the Underground Railroad in the Capital Region by Paul and Mary Liz Stewart. Their work uncovered the voices and stories of people written out of this history. Together\, these voices provide a different accounting of Underground Railroad activism and change the American narrative. \n\n\n\n\n\nSince its incorporation in 2003\, Underground Railroad Education Center has created a strong program of education and research that celebrates and preserves the story of the Underground Railroad in Albany and the Capital Region and its relationship with us today. URHPCR has identified the key primary and secondary figures and their activities\, and has developed a general outline of the local history of the movement. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCharles Clark III\, curator of The Black Experience in the Adirondacks  Charles employs a Pan-Africanist methodology\, enriched by material cultural approach\, to transform exhibition making in museums. His work addresses ethno cultural erasure and brings to light marginalized narratives within art history. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free storytelling workshop at the Sanctuary\, using a short PBS documentary Run\, Hide\, Fight: Growing up Under the Gun to prompt conversations around storytelling and humanity in a workshop led by storyteller and multi-disciplinary artist\, D. Colin. Young people of all ages are welcome with their families\, the story telling workshop is designed for middle to high school aged youth but there will be age appropriate activities for younger children.This event is made possible through the partnership with WMHT Public Media. \n\n\n\nFollowing the documentary\, Run\, Hide\, Fight: Growing up under the gun\, join D. Colin for a storytelling workshop exploring the power of personal stories in building connection\, sharing our humanity\, and leaving an impact. Run\, Hide\, Fight: Growing Up Under the Gun is a new 30-minute documentary about how gun violence affects young Americans\, from PBS News Student Reporting Labs in collaboration with 14 student journalists from five U.S. cities: Philadelphia\, Oakland\, Washington D.C.\, Nashville\, and East Lansing\, Michigan. Colin is a multidisciplinary artist of Haitian descent whose creative practice spans poetry\, visual art\, and theater. Originally from Connecticut\, she has called New York’s Capital Region home since 2007. With a background in English and Africana Studies\, she is a teaching artist and curator who creates and facilitates spaces for creativity\, storytelling\, and healing. \n\n\n\nD. Colin has received numerous accolades\, including the 2022 Excellence in Arts & Letters Award from UAlbany and the title of Resourceful Woman in the Arts in 2019. DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed environmentalist Bill McKibben will be at the Sanctuary to share his hope for our future in Here Comes the Sun\, a call to harness the power of the sun and rewrite our scientific\, economic\, and political future. Join us for this book talk\, Q&A\, and book signing with McKibben\, one of the first to sound the alarm about the climate crisis. McKibben will also be our special guest for a fundraiser dinner! This dinner will be an intimate gourmet vegan meal by extraordinary chef Intaba Liff-Anderson. \n\n\n\nHere Comes the Sun is a book about a last chance for the climate and a fresh chance for civilization by Bill McKibben\, an author\, environmentalist\, and activist. In 1988 he wrote The End of Nature\, the first book for a common audience about global warming. McKibben comes to the Sanctuary for a talk on his latest book\, followed by a Q&A and book signing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur climate\, and our democracy\, are melting down. But Bill McKibben\, one of the first to sound the alarm about the climate crisis\, insists the moment is also full of possibility. Energy from the sun and wind is suddenly the cheapest power on the planet and growing faster than any energy source in history—if we can keep accelerating the pace\, we have a chance. \n\n\n\nHere Comes the Sun tells the story of the sudden spike in power from the sun and wind—and the desperate fight of the fossil fuel industry and their politicians to hold this new power at bay. From the everyday citizens who installed solar panels equal to a third of Pakistan’s electric grid in a year to the world’s sixth-largest economy—California—nearly halving its use of natural gas in the last two years\, Bill McKibben traces the arrival of plentiful\, inexpensive solar energy. And he shows how solar power is more than just a path out of the climate crisis: it is a chance to reorder the world on saner and more humane grounds. You can’t hoard solar energy or hold it in reserves—it’s available to all. \n\n\n\nThere’s no guarantee we can make this change in time\, but there is a hope—in McKibben’s eyes\, our best hope for a new civilization: one that looks up to the sun\, every day\, as the star that fuels our world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBill McKibben is founder of Third Act\, which organizes people over the age of 60 for action on climate and justice. \n\n\n\nHis 1989 book The End of Nature is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change\, and has appeared in 24 languages. He’s gone on to write 20 books\, and his work appears regularly in periodicals from the New Yorker to Rolling Stone. He serves as the Schumann Distinguished Scholar in Environmental Studies at Middlebury College\, as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, and he has won the Gandhi Peace Prize as well as honorary degrees from 20 colleges and universities. He was awarded the Right Livelihood Award\, sometimes called the alternative Nobel\, in the Swedish Parliament. Foreign Policy named him to its inaugural list of the world’s 100 most important global thinkers. \n\n\n\nMcKibben helped found 350.org\, the first global grassroots climate campaign\, which has organized protests on every continent\, including Antarctica\, for climate action. He played a leading role in launching the opposition to big oil pipeline projects like Keystone XL\, and the fossil fuel divestment campaign\, which has become the biggest anti-corporate campaign in history\, with endowments worth more than $40 trillion stepping back from oil\, gas and coal. He stepped down as board chair of 350 in 2015\, and left the board and stepped down from his volunteer role as senior adviser in 2020\, accepting emeritus status. He lives in the mountains above Lake Champlain with his wife\, the writer Sue Halpern\, where he spends as much time as possible outdoors. She directed and co-produced a short – doc series for REMATRIATION – a Native American women’s online\, multi-media magazine. It is focused on healing and empowerment of Native women through the sharing of their stories and successes. Her most recent film\, Without a Whisper – Konnon:kwe is untold story of how Indigenous women influenced the early suffragists in their fight for freedom and equality. She is currently in production for Kanenon:we – Original Seeds a documentary on Indigenous women seed keepers protecting and rematriating our seed relatives for future generations. \n\n\n\nKatsitsionni Fox was interviewed by Kahstoserakwathe Paulette Moore for The Aunties Dandelion. She is the founder of the non-profit Rematriation. She is focused on leadership development and the reclaiming of Indigenous women’s traditional roles among their nations. The producer for the short documentary\, “An Indigenous Response to #MeToo” and “Rematriation’s Indigenous Women’s Voices” 9-part series. She is the host for an online talk show for Indigenous women called\, “Pine Tree Talks.” She and her husband\, Neal Powless\, also operate Indigenous Concepts Consulting with the goal of incorporating Indigenous perspectives into the mainstream\, and in existing business and media paradigms. She served as a senior strategist for Blue Stone Strategy Group\, providing economic and governance consulting for Indigenous nations across the country. She has an extensive background in law\, business development\, and consulting. Raised in Southwest Florida and based in New York\, Wortzel specifically attends to sites and stories systematically erased or ignored from these regions’ histories. RIVER OF GRASS (2025) is her first feature documentary. The film won the Pare Lorentz Award from IDA\, Hot Docs Joan VanDuzer Special Jury Prize – International Feature Documentary\, and Mead Audience Award\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Sanctuary for a session of recording community stories in audio form. Our radio program Hudson Mohawk Magazine (HMM) is a volunteer created news program which platforms stories related to our local community. Everybody Has a Story to Tell is a opportunity for HMM producers to support others in the recording of their own stories.  \n\n\n\nThis radio format is Inspired by Storycorp whose mission is “to help us believe in each other by illuminating the humanity and possibility in us all — one story at a time.” There is no better time than now to come to the Sanctuary with a partner to record your story to be included in a community audio archive.  \n\n\n\nBring someone important in your life (family member\, neighbor\, mentor…) to this workshop where you will be guided upon how to conduct an interview\, offered question suggestions\, and then you will be given the opportunity to be paired with volunteer producer to do a radio recording or to record your interview at a later time on your own.  \n\n\n\nAlthough we hope to air these stories on our radio program\, that part is not obligatory.  We also invite you to join us for a community brunch right before the workshop.

Drawing on his work in urban farming\, radical politics\, and academic research\, author Antonio Roman-Alcalá will discuss the themes of his book with local food justice advocates. \n\n\n\nAbout this Book\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow we grow\, harvest\, distribute\, and consume food is bound up with how we use (and abuse) environmental resources\, and how we achieve (or undermine) collective well-being. In North Stars of Emancipation\, Antonio Roman-Alcalá finds in the radical experiments of new food movements the seeds of a world liberated from old\, extractive systems\, where a more equitable way of eating and living is possible. \n\n\n\nThe book traces the transformation of California’s diverse food movements as Black\, Indigenous\, Latinx\, and other people of color have come to play a larger organizational role\, especially at a time of toxic national politics. Now\, he leads educational programming\, works with farm team\, and leads AV for the campus. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEricka Williams Rodriguez is an Afro-Indigenous labor and housing organizer\, farmer\, and advocate for incarcerated people and their families. She co-founded Serenity Solidarity\, a Black and Indigenous-led land project in the capital region\, and is developing Mumia House there\, dedicated to political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal. She is a member of New York State Jails Justice Network\, and is motivated by ending colonization and the suffering of her people. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nScott Kellogg is the Educational Director at the Radix Center\, an urban ecological literacy and just sustainabilities advocacy non-profit in Albany\, New York. Radix runs a one-acre farm in the middle of the city that teaches local youth about gardening\, composting\, tree planting\, and river activism. He currently also teaches at Bard College’s Center for Environment and Policy and is Chair of Urban Agriculture for the Albany Sustainability Commission.
