SUMMARY:DIY Air Filter Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to build your own air purifiers using a box fan\, a furnace filter\, and cardboard! Air Justice Lab and Capital Region Clean Air are collaborating for this DIY workshop with enough materials for up to 12 builds!  \n\n\n\nRegistration is REQUIRED for this limited capacity event\, with priority to the immediate neighborhood. High quality masks/respirators (such as N95s) and rapid COVID tests will be required and provided for all attendees. Pick up goodie bags\, containing masks and COVID test\, between 3 – 6pm on Fridays March 28\, April 4\, and April 11 \n\n\n\nItinerary: 2pm to 3pm: Info Session on air quality and intersectionality and demonstration3pm to 4pm: Build\, build\, build! *feel free to bring stickers or special tape to decorate your air filter  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCommunity Safety Agreements:\n\n\n\n\nRespirator Requirement: All attendees are required to wear a high-quality respirator (minimum KN95\, N95 preferred) while indoors throughout the entire workshop. Please practice social distancing  (10ft) when stepping outside for mask break. \n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Testing: Attendees must take a rapid antigen test on the day of the event. Dr. Mair was until recently the Adirondack Council’s “Wilderness Campaign Director” responsible for connecting all New Yorkers to the nation’s largest environmental treasure. As a national environmental justice movement pioneer\, founder of Albany’s Haywood Burns Environmental Justice education center\, and activist of the Arbor Hill\, NY community in Albany\, he was also responsible for the creation of the Arbor Hill Environmental Justice Corporation. DESCRIPTION:Learn to make tinctures! Tinctures are potent alcohol based herbal remedies that are taken internally to support wellbeing. You will learn best methods for making tinctures from fresh and dried plants\, including the techniques of maceration and percolation\, with a touch of plant chemistry and math. You will go home with the skills to stock your own home apothecary this coming season with all your favorite herbal tinctures. \n\n\n\nLimited spots available. Registration with a $10 refundable deposit is required to hold your place. Donations recommended on a sliding scale of $0 – 30; no one will be turned away for lack of funds. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the facilitator\n\n\n\nRebecca Hein is a community herbalist and urban farmer. Founder and owner of Underground Alchemy\, she has been making herbal remedies grown on what were vacant lots in Albany’s South End since 2011. Her work is driven by a desire to connect people and plants\, support community health and empowerment\, and position herbalism in the struggle for accessible healthcare. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis series is facilitated by herbalists affiliated with the People’s Health Sanctuary Community Apothecary who are volunteering their time and sharing information for educational purposes. None of the remedies shared in these workshops are intended to diagnose or treat any disease.  \n\n\n\nThe workshop series is held on the second floor of the NATURE Lab building\, which is currently only accessible by a flight of stairs. DESCRIPTION:An act of creative resistance to Apartheid\, No Other Land documents a Palestinian activist and his unlikely alliance with an Israeli journalist\, as he searches for a path towards equality and justice. Join us for this film screening and panel discussion. \n\n\n\nNo Other Land is the 2025 Oscar winner for Best Documentary Feature\, a major win for a film that couldn’t get a U.S. distributor. \n\n\n\nFilm Screening will begin at 7:30pm to allow people to break fast for Ramadan. In the meantime\, Taína Asili will share her most recent video “Strong Tree” about the local movement in support of Palestine. \n\n\n\nSOLD OUT\n\n\n\nFilm synopsis\n\n\n\nOver five years\, a Palestinian-Israeli collective of directors captured footage of Masafer Yatta residents in the West Bank and their struggle\, survival\, and death in the face of the Israeli military and settlers\, as they witnessed the destruction of their homes and schools and were forced to leave their villages with nowhere to go. Yet No Other Land is more than a powerful work of cinéma vérité; it is the story of the growing friendship between Palestinian activist Basel Adra and Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham\, both united by harrowing circumstances and one fragile idea: that through cinema and resistance\, one can (perhaps) imagine a space of peace and freedom that never existed in their lives. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNo Other Land is an award winning documentary\, including the winner of the 2025 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature award and the 2024 Berlinale Best Documentary award.  \n\n\n\nPanelists:\n\n\n\nHana’ is a farmer and beekeeper\, who just returned home to the Capital District after spending two months in Palestine. DESCRIPTION:Chris Hedges will return to the Sanctuary for Independent Media to give the talk “Normalizing Genocide and the New World Order” which asks how the world has changed since the genocide began\, how we navigate a world without rules or humanitarian law and how the genocidal violence perpetuated by the Global North\, especially as the climate crisis deepens\, will be turned with ever more frequency on the peoples of the Global South. \n\n\n\n\n\nChris Hedges\, the former Middle East Bureau Chief for The New York Times\, is a Pulitzer-prize winning reporter and Arabic speaker. He spent 7 years covering the conflict between Israel and Palestine. He is the author of numerous books including the New York Times bestsellers War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning\, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America and Days of Destruction\, Days of Revolt\, which he co-authored with the cartoonist Joe Sacco. He has taught at Columbia University\, New York University\, Princeton University\, and the University of Toronto. He has also taught students in the college degree program offered by Rutgers University in the New Jersey prison system for a decade\, the subject of his book Our Class: Trauma and Transformation in an American Prison. DESCRIPTION:Air Justice Lab and Clean Air Capital Region are hosting a workshop to build a Corsi-Rosenthal Box (DIY air purifier) while discussing air quality issues and the intersections of environmental\, health\, and disability justice.  \n\n\n\nUnhealthy air quality got you down? Want to slow the spread of viruses over the holidays? Join us to build a Corsi-Rosenthal box! We will supply building materials and guide you through the construction. Come solo or bring a friend! \n\n\n\nAt this workshop\, we will work together to build DIY air purifiers using a box fan\, a furnace filter\, and cardboard! We will be able to supply free materials for up to 12 builds. Items will be supplied in order of first registered for the event. \n\n\n\nRegistration for this limited event is FULL.High quality masks/respirators (such as N95s) will be required and provided for all attendees. \n\n\n\nClean Air Capital Region is a mutual aid project that is hosted by the Sanctuary for Independent Media. Donations will support the Sanctuary so they can continue to offer community events like this one. \n\n\n\nAccess info:\n\n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary and upstairs bathroom are wheelchair accessible. DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for Positive Health‘s Community Overdose Response Training teaches participants the impact of opioid overdoses in New York State\, the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose\, and how to respond. This workshop is preceded by an Cultural Humility Training at 1pm. \n\n\n\nAn opioid overdose emergency can happen anywhere\, at any time. This training will help empower participants to respond\, and potentially reverse\, an opioid overdose emergency. Following this training\, all participants are provided with a free overdose response kit\, which includes two doses of naloxone/Narcan (the medication that reverses opioid overdoses). \n\n\n\nAbout the Alliance for Positive Health: Serving 15 counties in New York State\, the Alliance for Positive Health is a leader in testing and care coordination services for those living with or at risk of contracting HIV. Our responsibility is to empower and support those impacted by sexually transmitted diseases\, substance use and substance use disorder\, and associated health and mental health challenges. DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for Positive Health‘s Cultural Humility Training is a judgement-free\, educational workshop investigating the best practices for interacting with and engaging with people who use drugs. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the feature-length documentary film Farming While Black followed by a panel discussion which will include local Black farmers and gardeners\, moderated by Leah Penniman of Soul Fire Farm. Complimentary light refreshments will be served featuring Soul Fire Farm’s harvest and provided by Rumah Kitchen. The screening will be preceded by a Be The Media! workshop with the film’s director\, Mark Decena from 5-6pm. \n\n\n\n\nLeah Penniman\, co-founder of Soul Fire Farm\, reflects on the plight of Black farmers in the United States. From the height of Black-owned farms at 14% in 1910 to less than 2% today. Leah and her Soul Fire Farm cohorts help propel a rising generation finding strength in the deep historical knowledge of African agrarianism – and its potential to save the planet. \n\n\n\n\nThis event is co-curated by Kathy High and Branda Miller\, and is a collaboration with the RPI’s iEAR Presents series\, supported by the Department of Arts and the School of Humanities\, Arts\, and Social Sciences\, and is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFarming While Black is a feature-length documentary film which examines the historical plight of Black farmers in the United States and the rising generation reclaiming their rightful ownership to land and reconnecting with their ancestral roots. \n\n\n\nAs the co-founder of Soul Fire Farm in upstate New York\, Leah Penniman finds strength in the deep historical knowledge of African agrarianism – agricultural practices that can heal people and the planet. Influenced and inspired by Karen Washington\, a pioneer in urban community gardens in New York City\, and fellow farmer and organizer Blain Snipstal\, Leah galvanizes around farming as the basis of revolutionary justice. \n\n\n\nIn 1910\, Black farmers owned 14 percent of all American farmland. Over the intervening decades\, that number fell below two percent\, the result of racism\, discrimination\, and dispossession. The film chronicles Penniman and two other Black farmers’ efforts to reclaim their agricultural heritage. SUMMARY:Be The Media! workshop: Regenerative Filmmaking– Is it possible?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Be The Media! workshop with the director of Farming While Black\, Mark Decena of Kontent Films. Using inspiration from film clips relating to resilience Decena will discuss the concept of sustainability and methods of regenerative actions as related to filmmaking\, but also as a self-preservation concept. Decena will address the highs and lows of activist filmmaking\, being overstretched some days/months waiting on projects others\, as well as being overwhelmed when things hit all at once\, and dealing with the grind of fundraising. He will think with participants various ways to keep moving forward even when things look bleak\, embracing regenerative and sustainable practices in farming as translated to filmmaking – or rather\, “how to be a regenerative filmmaker” in harmony with the planet and each other. \n\n\n\nStay after the workshop for the Screening of Farming While Black followed by a panel discussion\, beginning at 7pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMark Decena: Founder of Kontent Films\, Director – Raised by an immigrant single mother\, Mark spent his formative years softening hard adobe clay soil with compost. Besides keeping him in line\, it infused Decena with a love of growing things – to date: feature films\, television shows\, and short film series. \n\n\n\nA three time Sundance alumni\, Mark’s first feature\, Dopamine won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize. Decena’s documentary work spans across themes of social justice\, sustainable design and the environment. He wrote and directed the Redford Center film\, Watershed\, and was a writer and producer on Stand Up Planet\, a Gates funded project that aired on Participant Media’s channel\, Pivot and KCET. His latest feature film\, Not Without Us\, premiered as the closing night film at the S.F. Green Film Festival and aired nationally on PBS. Decena’s latest short films\, Remothering the Land\, co-produced with Patagonia Films\, premiered at the DC Environmental Film Festival\, and Me & My Robot premiered at COPDOX and aired on PBS. This annual event takes place at Freedom Square\, bringing together community groups and offering activities\, games\, music\, and food.*rain location indoors at our main space\, 3361 6th Ave \n\n\n\nDo you know how clean Troy’s water is? Water Justice Lab fellows have been testing local waters and will let you know where is safe and what is not. How have every day folks protected our water? We will have activities and games around the history and future of protecting water. What to macroinvertebrates look like? We will have a viewing station of critters from our streams. How can we protect our local waterways?
