DESCRIPTION:An act of creative resistance to Apartheid\, No Other Land documents a Palestinian activist and his unlikely alliance with an Israeli journalist\, as he searches for a path towards equality and justice. Join us for this film screening and panel discussion. \n\n\n\nNo Other Land is the 2025 Oscar winner for Best Documentary Feature\, a major win for a film that couldn’t get a U.S. distributor. \n\n\n\nFilm Screening will begin at 7:30pm to allow people to break fast for Ramadan. In the meantime\, Taína Asili will share her most recent video “Strong Tree” about the local movement in support of Palestine. \n\n\n\nSOLD OUT\n\n\n\nFilm synopsis\n\n\n\nOver five years\, a Palestinian-Israeli collective of directors captured footage of Masafer Yatta residents in the West Bank and their struggle\, survival\, and death in the face of the Israeli military and settlers\, as they witnessed the destruction of their homes and schools and were forced to leave their villages with nowhere to go. Yet No Other Land is more than a powerful work of cinéma vérité; it is the story of the growing friendship between Palestinian activist Basel Adra and Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham\, both united by harrowing circumstances and one fragile idea: that through cinema and resistance\, one can (perhaps) imagine a space of peace and freedom that never existed in their lives. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNo Other Land is an award winning documentary\, including the winner of the 2025 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature award and the 2024 Berlinale Best Documentary award.  \n\n\n\nPanelists:\n\n\n\nHana’ is a farmer and beekeeper\, who just returned home to the Capital District after spending two months in Palestine. Hana’ is an activist with the Palestinian Rights Committee. \n\n\n\nFaris is a Palestinian and Muslim American\, originally from a small Palestinian village outside the city of Ramallah. Faris is a member of the Palestine Narrative Project\, working to educate the Capital Region on the Palestinian cause and inspire people to work towards Palestinian liberation. \n\n\n\nKeren Carmeli is a member of the Albany chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace and the Palestinian Rights Committee. She is an anti-Zionist Israeli-American who was raised in occupied Palestine\, and draws on her family’s Holocaust survival story to inform her dedication to the liberation of Palestine”. \n\n\n\nModerator: Jude Abu Zaineh is a Palestinian-Canadian interdisciplinary artist-curator working across art\, food\, science\, and technology studies. DESCRIPTION:Chris Hedges will return to the Sanctuary for Independent Media to give the talk “Normalizing Genocide and the New World Order” which asks how the world has changed since the genocide began\, how we navigate a world without rules or humanitarian law and how the genocidal violence perpetuated by the Global North\, especially as the climate crisis deepens\, will be turned with ever more frequency on the peoples of the Global South. \n\n\n\n\n\nChris Hedges\, the former Middle East Bureau Chief for The New York Times\, is a Pulitzer-prize winning reporter and Arabic speaker. He spent 7 years covering the conflict between Israel and Palestine. He is the author of numerous books including the New York Times bestsellers War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning\, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America and Days of Destruction\, Days of Revolt\, which he co-authored with the cartoonist Joe Sacco. He has taught at Columbia University\, New York University\, Princeton University\, and the University of Toronto. He has also taught students in the college degree program offered by Rutgers University in the New Jersey prison system for a decade\, the subject of his book Our Class: Trauma and Transformation in an American Prison. DESCRIPTION:Air Justice Lab and Clean Air Capital Region are hosting a workshop to build a Corsi-Rosenthal Box (DIY air purifier) while discussing air quality issues and the intersections of environmental\, health\, and disability justice.  \n\n\n\nUnhealthy air quality got you down? Want to slow the spread of viruses over the holidays? Join us to build a Corsi-Rosenthal box! We will supply building materials and guide you through the construction. Come solo or bring a friend! \n\n\n\nAt this workshop\, we will work together to build DIY air purifiers using a box fan\, a furnace filter\, and cardboard! We will be able to supply free materials for up to 12 builds. Items will be supplied in order of first registered for the event. \n\n\n\nRegistration for this limited event is FULL.High quality masks/respirators (such as N95s) will be required and provided for all attendees. \n\n\n\nClean Air Capital Region is a mutual aid project that is hosted by the Sanctuary for Independent Media. Donations will support the Sanctuary so they can continue to offer community events like this one. \n\n\n\nAccess info:\n\n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary and upstairs bathroom are wheelchair accessible. There is a ramp at the entrance of the Sanctuary.\n\n\n\nPlease do not wear any fragrances. We will not use aerosols in the space before the event.\n\n\n\nRapid antigen testing for COVID-19 is required on day-of event for all attendees. He has written extensively about freedom\, democracy and education\, the cultural contexts of school\, and teaching as an intellectual\, ethical and political enterprise. His new book\, When Freedom is the Question\, Abolition is the Answer: Reflections on Collective Liberation\, shares reflections that incorporate history\, political theory\, literature\, and his own personal experience within social movements. They come together to offer a radical vision for a more just and equitable world. \n\n\n\nThe book asks these essential questions: What is freedom? How do we get free? Ayers examines the roots of systemic oppression and the concept of freedom in eight essays\, each of which include a writing prompt that encourages readers to engage actively with the topics Ayers explores within:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbolition as a framework: Ayers invites readers to understand abolition as a framework in which not only incarceration\, police violence\, and racial and economic disparities are eliminated\, but a new society built on restorative justice\, mutual aid\, and community solidarity thrives. “Our job\, right here and right now\, is to become today’s abolitionists—reimagining\, resisting\, and rebuilding in the nameof freedom.”Critique of the current system: In When Freedom…\, Ayers critiques our individualistic society. “Extreme individualism is sold to us as ‘human nature\,’” he explains\, “and it has the effect of disarming people in the face of collective problems.” Ayers describes a necessary tension between “me” and “we” where there is temptation to view freedom as one’s own lived experience being the most important. Barbara’s work has been a source of guidance and inspiration to people and movements committed to battling for freedom. In 1980 she co-founded Albany-based Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press\, the first U.S. publisher of books for women of color and has led freedom struggles ever since.

SUMMARY:Community Overdose Response Training
DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for Positive Health‘s Community Overdose Response Training teaches participants the impact of opioid overdoses in New York State\, the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose\, and how to respond. This workshop is preceded by an Cultural Humility Training at 1pm. \n\n\n\nAn opioid overdose emergency can happen anywhere\, at any time. This training will help empower participants to respond\, and potentially reverse\, an opioid overdose emergency. Following this training\, all participants are provided with a free overdose response kit\, which includes two doses of naloxone/Narcan (the medication that reverses opioid overdoses). \n\n\n\nAbout the Alliance for Positive Health: Serving 15 counties in New York State\, the Alliance for Positive Health is a leader in testing and care coordination services for those living with or at risk of contracting HIV. Our responsibility is to empower and support those impacted by sexually transmitted diseases\, substance use and substance use disorder\, and associated health and mental health challenges. Through our 9+ service programs\, we are able to support individuals with housing\, nutrition\, medical care coordination\, harm reduction\, and more.  \n\n\n\nAbout Sophie (class leader): Sophie (she/they) is the Capital Region Opioid Overdose Prevention Program Coordinator at the Alliance for Positive Health. With a background in neuroscience and chemistry\, Sophie brings the most up-to-date research on substance use to life through interactive presentations and judgement-free education. SUMMARY:Cultural Humility Training
DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for Positive Health‘s Cultural Humility Training is a judgement-free\, educational workshop investigating the best practices for interacting with and engaging with people who use drugs. This training will be followed by an Community Overdose Response Training at 2pm. \n\n\n\nDuring this 60-minute workshop\, we discuss how drugs work in the brain\, why people use substances\, and how to use accurate and stigma-free language to talk about substance use. We also investigate stigma that exists around substance use\, the harm that stigma causes\, and how to best work against systemic\, institutional\, and individual stigma. SUMMARY:"Farming While Black" Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the feature-length documentary film Farming While Black followed by a panel discussion which will include local Black farmers and gardeners\, moderated by Leah Penniman of Soul Fire Farm. Complimentary light refreshments will be served featuring Soul Fire Farm’s harvest and provided by Rumah Kitchen. The screening will be preceded by a Be The Media! workshop with the film’s director\, Mark Decena from 5-6pm. \n\n\n\n\nLeah Penniman\, co-founder of Soul Fire Farm\, reflects on the plight of Black farmers in the United States. From the height of Black-owned farms at 14% in 1910 to less than 2% today. Leah and her Soul Fire Farm cohorts help propel a rising generation finding strength in the deep historical knowledge of African agrarianism – and its potential to save the planet. \n\n\n\n\nThis event is co-curated by Kathy High and Branda Miller\, and is a collaboration with the RPI’s iEAR Presents series\, supported by the Department of Arts and the School of Humanities\, Arts\, and Social Sciences\, and is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFarming While Black is a feature-length documentary film which examines the historical plight of Black farmers in the United States and the rising generation reclaiming their rightful ownership to land and reconnecting with their ancestral roots. \n\n\n\nAs the co-founder of Soul Fire Farm in upstate New York\, Leah Penniman finds strength in the deep historical knowledge of African agrarianism – agricultural practices that can heal people and the planet. Influenced and inspired by Karen Washington\, a pioneer in urban community gardens in New York City\, and fellow farmer and organizer Blain Snipstal\, Leah galvanizes around farming as the basis of revolutionary justice. \n\n\n\nIn 1910\, Black farmers owned 14 percent of all American farmland. Over the intervening decades\, that number fell below two percent\, the result of racism\, discrimination\, and dispossession. The film chronicles Penniman and two other Black farmers’ efforts to reclaim their agricultural heritage. SUMMARY:Be The Media! workshop: Regenerative Filmmaking– Is it possible?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Be The Media! workshop with the director of Farming While Black\, Mark Decena of Kontent Films. Using inspiration from film clips relating to resilience Decena will discuss the concept of sustainability and methods of regenerative actions as related to filmmaking\, but also as a self-preservation concept. Decena will address the highs and lows of activist filmmaking\, being overstretched some days/months waiting on projects others\, as well as being overwhelmed when things hit all at once\, and dealing with the grind of fundraising. He will think with participants various ways to keep moving forward even when things look bleak\, embracing regenerative and sustainable practices in farming as translated to filmmaking – or rather\, “how to be a regenerative filmmaker” in harmony with the planet and each other. \n\n\n\nStay after the workshop for the Screening of Farming While Black followed by a panel discussion\, beginning at 7pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMark Decena: Founder of Kontent Films\, Director – Raised by an immigrant single mother\, Mark spent his formative years softening hard adobe clay soil with compost. Besides keeping him in line\, it infused Decena with a love of growing things – to date: feature films\, television shows\, and short film series. \n\n\n\nA three time Sundance alumni\, Mark’s first feature\, Dopamine won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize. Decena’s documentary work spans across themes of social justice\, sustainable design and the environment. He wrote and directed the Redford Center film\, Watershed\, and was a writer and producer on Stand Up Planet\, a Gates funded project that aired on Participant Media’s channel\, Pivot and KCET. His latest feature film\, Not Without Us\, premiered as the closing night film at the S.F. Green Film Festival and aired nationally on PBS. Decena’s latest short films\, Remothering the Land\, co-produced with Patagonia Films\, premiered at the DC Environmental Film Festival\, and Me & My Robot premiered at COPDOX and aired on PBS. SUMMARY:PHS Community Acupuncture
DESCRIPTION:PHS is offering the first People’s Health Community Acupuncture as part of our Healing Days.  Community acupuncture is a grassroots model to increase access to acupuncture. It is done in a group setting (about 5 people at a time) in comfortable recliners and uses points mainly in your hands and feet.   \n\n\n\nThe last appointment of the day is at 3:10p. Walk-ins are welcome\, if there is space. Please wear comfy clothes and drink plenty of water!  Acupuncture will be performed by Xavier\, a NYS certified physician-acupuncturist. He was trained in a Japanese style formulated by Kiko Matsumoto through the Acumed program. \n\n\n\n\nSign up here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is acupuncture?\n\n\n\nJohn Hopkins Medicine writes\, acupuncture is the practice of penetrating the skin with thin\, solid\, metallic needles which are then activated through gentle and specific movements of the practitioner’s hands or with electrical stimulation.  \n\n\n\nAcupuncture is part of the ancient practice of Traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe the human body has more than 2\,000 acupuncture points connected by pathways or meridians. These pathways create an energy flow (Qi\, pronounced “chee”) through the body that is responsible for overall health. Disruption of the energy flow can cause disease. By applying acupuncture to certain points\, it is thought to improve the flow of Qi\, thereby improving health. Read more \n\n\n\nMore about community acupuncture\n\n\n\nCommunity acupuncture is a grassroots model designed to increase access to acupuncture. It is done in a group setting\, mainly using points mainly in your hands\, feet\, and ears.  In the US\, specifically at the Lincoln Hospital Detox Program in the Bronx\, the practice was brought over in the 70’s from China by Black Panther and Young Lord activists.  It has been refined and spread through the work of the Peoples Organization of Community Acupuncture (POCA).

This event is featured as part of the Sanctuary for Independent Media’s Freedom Fest in collaboration with the American Music Festival. Join us at the Sanctuary Main Space for the culmination of our multi-year NEA Our Town Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail Project! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrent Michael Davids is an internationally celebrated Mohican and Munsee-Lenape composer\, and self-described music warrior. As an advocate for Native equity and parity\, Davids places Native voices front and center. He originated and co-founded the award-winning Native American Composer Apprentice Project (NACAP)\, championing indigenous youth to compose their own written music. He uses indigenous instruments\, including handmade quartz flutes\, and pens performable notations that are themselves visual works of art. Davids is co-director of the Lenape Center in Manhattan\, and is enrolled in the Stockbridge-Munsee Community.
