DESCRIPTION:PHS is excited to begin hosting regular Community Acupuncture on most Friday afternoons in the fall.  Community acupuncture is a grassroots technique developed to offer the healing benefits of acupuncture at an accessible cost as well as coupled with the benefit of healing in community.  Folks can sign up ahead of time or walk in!   \n\n\n\nSessions are spaced every 15 mins and usually last about an hour. Please only register if you are sure you can make it\, holding spots doesn’t allow others to sign up. Contact fxcoughlin@gmail.com to if you need to cancel. \n\n\n\n\nRegister for Community Acupuncture\n\n\n\n\n\nYou will be seated in a cozy lounge chair\, in a large semi-circle with up to 4 other people. \n\n\n\nYou will be seated in a cozy lounge chair\, in a large semi-circle with up to 4 other people.\n\n\n\nThe acupuncturist will ask a few simple questions about your health\, then place appropriate needles in your arms\, legs and ear.  People find it quite relaxing and often take a nap!\n\n\n\nAcupuncture is a subtle healing energy and best works with 3-4 visits over the space of one to two months.\n\n\n\nPlease wear comfy clothes that can easily be pulled above your elbows and knees. If you often get cold\, please bring a blanket. And drink plenty of water.\n\n\n\nWe are asking for sliding scale donations to make these sessions sustainable. Please plan to donate between $20-40 per session\, these go to cover costs\, provide a stipend for the acupuncture team\, and take care of the space. If you are able to donate more\, it will help cover costs for someone else. If you are unable to donate\, please come for healing regardless\, no one will be turned away. You can send money via venmo to @ HAC NE (please put CAP in comments)\, Paypal at fxcoughlin@gmail.com\, or cash at the session.\n\n\n\nAcupuncture will be performed by Xavier\, a NYS certified physician-acupuncturist. He was trained in a Japanese style formulated by Kiko Matsumoto through the Acumed program.\n\n\n\n\nWhat is Acupuncture\n\n\n\nJohn Hopkins Medicine writes\, acupuncture is the practice of penetrating the skin with thin\, solid\, metallic needles which are then activated through gentle and specific movements of the practitioner’s hands or with electrical stimulation.  \n\n\n\nAcupuncture is part of the ancient practice of Traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe the human body has more than 2\,000 acupuncture points connected by pathways or meridians. These pathways create an energy flow (Qi\, pronounced “chee”) through the body that is responsible for overall health. Disruption of the energy flow can cause disease. By applying acupuncture to certain points\, it is thought to improve the flow of Qi\, thereby improving health. Read more \n\n\n\nMore about community acupuncture\n\n\n\nCommunity acupuncture is a grassroots model designed to increase access to acupuncture. It is done in a group setting\, mainly using points mainly in your hands\, feet\, and ears.  In the US\, specifically at the Lincoln Hospital Detox Program in the Bronx\, the practice was brought over in the 70’s from China by Black Panther and Young Lord activists.  It has been refined and spread through the work of the Peoples Organization of Community Acupuncture (POCA).

SUMMARY:Community Overdose Response Training
DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for Positive Health‘s Community Overdose Response Training teaches participants the impact of opioid overdoses in New York State\, the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose\, and how to respond. This workshop is preceded by an Cultural Humility Training at 1pm. \n\n\n\nAn opioid overdose emergency can happen anywhere\, at any time. Following this training\, all participants are provided with a free overdose response kit\, which includes two doses of naloxone/Narcan (the medication that reverses opioid overdoses). \n\n\n\nAbout the Alliance for Positive Health: Serving 15 counties in New York State\, the Alliance for Positive Health is a leader in testing and care coordination services for those living with or at risk of contracting HIV. Our responsibility is to empower and support those impacted by sexually transmitted diseases\, substance use and substance use disorder\, and associated health and mental health challenges. Through our 9+ service programs\, we are able to support individuals with housing\, nutrition\, medical care coordination\, harm reduction\, and more.  \n\n\n\nAbout Sophie (class leader): Sophie (she/they) is the Capital Region Opioid Overdose Prevention Program Coordinator at the Alliance for Positive Health. SUMMARY:Cultural Humility Training
DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for Positive Health‘s Cultural Humility Training is a judgement-free\, educational workshop investigating the best practices for interacting with and engaging with people who use drugs. This training will be followed by an Community Overdose Response Training at 2pm. \n\n\n\nDuring this 60-minute workshop\, we discuss how drugs work in the brain\, why people use substances\, and how to use accurate and stigma-free language to talk about substance use. SUMMARY:"Farming While Black" Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the feature-length documentary film Farming While Black followed by a panel discussion which will include local Black farmers and gardeners\, moderated by Leah Penniman of Soul Fire Farm. Complimentary light refreshments will be served featuring Soul Fire Farm’s harvest and provided by Rumah Kitchen. The screening will be preceded by a Be The Media! workshop with the film’s director\, Mark Decena from 5-6pm. \n\n\n\n\nLeah Penniman\, co-founder of Soul Fire Farm\, reflects on the plight of Black farmers in the United States. From the height of Black-owned farms at 14% in 1910 to less than 2% today. Leah and her Soul Fire Farm cohorts help propel a rising generation finding strength in the deep historical knowledge of African agrarianism – and its potential to save the planet. \n\n\n\n\nThis event is co-curated by Kathy High and Branda Miller\, and is a collaboration with the RPI’s iEAR Presents series\, supported by the Department of Arts and the School of Humanities\, Arts\, and Social Sciences\, and is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFarming While Black is a feature-length documentary film which examines the historical plight of Black farmers in the United States and the rising generation reclaiming their rightful ownership to land and reconnecting with their ancestral roots. \n\n\n\nAs the co-founder of Soul Fire Farm in upstate New York\, Leah Penniman finds strength in the deep historical knowledge of African agrarianism – agricultural practices that can heal people and the planet. Influenced and inspired by Karen Washington\, a pioneer in urban community gardens in New York City\, and fellow farmer and organizer Blain Snipstal\, Leah galvanizes around farming as the basis of revolutionary justice. \n\n\n\nIn 1910\, Black farmers owned 14 percent of all American farmland. Over the intervening decades\, that number fell below two percent\, the result of racism\, discrimination\, and dispossession. The film chronicles Penniman and two other Black farmers’ efforts to reclaim their agricultural heritage. SUMMARY:Be The Media! workshop: Regenerative Filmmaking– Is it possible?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Be The Media! workshop with the director of Farming While Black\, Mark Decena of Kontent Films. Using inspiration from film clips relating to resilience Decena will discuss the concept of sustainability and methods of regenerative actions as related to filmmaking\, but also as a self-preservation concept. Decena will address the highs and lows of activist filmmaking\, being overstretched some days/months waiting on projects others\, as well as being overwhelmed when things hit all at once\, and dealing with the grind of fundraising. He will think with participants various ways to keep moving forward even when things look bleak\, embracing regenerative and sustainable practices in farming as translated to filmmaking – or rather\, “how to be a regenerative filmmaker” in harmony with the planet and each other. \n\n\n\nStay after the workshop for the Screening of Farming While Black followed by a panel discussion\, beginning at 7pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMark Decena: Founder of Kontent Films\, Director – Raised by an immigrant single mother\, Mark spent his formative years softening hard adobe clay soil with compost. Besides keeping him in line\, it infused Decena with a love of growing things – to date: feature films\, television shows\, and short film series. \n\n\n\nA three time Sundance alumni\, Mark’s first feature\, Dopamine won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize. Decena’s documentary work spans across themes of social justice\, sustainable design and the environment. He wrote and directed the Redford Center film\, Watershed\, and was a writer and producer on Stand Up Planet\, a Gates funded project that aired on Participant Media’s channel\, Pivot and KCET. His latest feature film\, Not Without Us\, premiered as the closing night film at the S.F. Green Film Festival and aired nationally on PBS. Decena’s latest short films\, Remothering the Land\, co-produced with Patagonia Films\, premiered at the DC Environmental Film Festival\, and Me & My Robot premiered at COPDOX and aired on PBS. By applying acupuncture to certain points\, it is thought to improve the flow of Qi\, thereby improving health. DESCRIPTION:Join media artist Theo Jean Cuthand for a Be The Media! participatory radio workshop\, to focus on Indigiqueer and ecological issues.  \n\n\n\nUsing improvisational documentary techniques\, the Be The Media! workshop participants will create a short radio play with Theo Jean Cuthand\, loosely inspired by Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds broadcast but based on the colonization of what is now Troy by European Settlers. Since 1995 he has been making short experimental videos and films about sexuality\, madness\, Queer identity and love\, and gender and Indigeneity\, which have screened in festivals internationally. \n\n\n\nHis work has also exhibited at galleries including the MOMA in NYC\, The National Gallery in Ottawa\, and The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. He completed his BFA majoring in Film and Video at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2005\, and his Masters of Arts in Media Production at Toronto Metropolitan University in 2015. He has also written three feature screenplays and has performed at Live At The End Of The Century in Vancouver\, Queer City Cinema’s Performatorium in Regina\, and 7a*11d in Toronto. In 2017 he won the Hnatyshyn Foundation’s REVEAL Indigenous Art Award. He is a Whitney Biennial 2019 artist. He is of Plains Cree and Scots descent\, a member of Little Pine First Nation\, and currently resides in Toronto\, Canada. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis is the second night of a series of two events in a collaboration between the Arts Department and EMPAC at RPI\, by Plains Cree and Scots artist Theo Jean Cuthand. At EMPAC on May 29\, Cuthand presents an artist talk and screening that explores his work and process through an Indigiqueer lens. SUMMARY:DE-FENCE Part 2: The Line Becomes a Territory 
DESCRIPTION:Join us at NATURE Lab for DE-FENCE Part 2: The Line Becomes a Territory with Margaretha Haughwout\, who will lead participants in the creation of DE-FENCE\, a living participatory art installation at NATURE Lab under the umbrella of the Sanctuary’s growing Eco-Art Trail. \n\n\n\nFor part 2 of DE-FENCE\, participants will help install deconstructed fence posts (specially carved with designs that emerge from ongoing community drawing exercises)\, and plant medicinal seeds and seedlings from the artist’s Food Forest Studio. We will continue to discover already existing medicinal plants growing in the marginal spaces and edge conditions of the neighborhood\, discuss neighborhood environmental health conditions\, and discuss the ways that marginal medicinal plants can participate in the bioremediation and protection of the ecosocial communities around NATURE Lab. “The Line Becomes a Territory” is the header from a section in a forthcoming book entitled Ruderal Witchcraft by Margaretha\, co-written with Oliver Kellhammer\, and explores the ways that communities who want to resist the forces of capitalist accumulation can find power in\, occupy\, and expand the boundaries\, edge zones and fence-lines established by regimes of private property.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore about Margaretha Haughwout\n\n\n\n\n\nMargaretha Haughwout works with humans\, and the more-than-human\, across technologies and ecologies\, to cultivate a radical imagination that challenges proprietary regimes\, colonial temporalities\, and capitalist forms of labor. Her work manifests as speculative fabulation\, intervention\, participatory event\, walking tour\, experimental pedagogy\, installation\, and biological processes. Haughwout’s active collaborations include the Coven Intelligence Program\, with efrén cruz cortés\, the Guerrilla Grafters\, and Ruderal Witchcraft with Oliver Kellhammer. She created and maintains the Food Forest Studio in Central New York. \n\n\n\nHaughwout’s personal and collaborative artwork is exhibited nationally and internationally\, most recently\, at Stadwerkstatt in Linz\, Austria\, the Pixelache Festival in Helsinki\, Finland\, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco\, California\, and at Bennington College in Benington\, Vermont. Haughwout received her MFA from the University of California Santa Cruz. DESCRIPTION:Join author Amy Godine for a book talk on her most recent work\, The Black Woods: Pursuing Racial Justice on the Adirondack Frontier. The presentation will be followed by an audience Q&A.  \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Black Woods: Pursuing Racial Justice on the Adirondack Frontier (2023\, Cornell University Press) chronicles the dramatic history of Black pioneers in New York’s northern wilderness. From the 1840s into the 1860s\, they migrated to the Adirondacks to build farms and to vote. On their new land they could hope to meet the $250 property requirement New York imposed on Black prospective voters in 1821\, and gain a cherished right of citizenship\, the ballot. \n\n\n\nIn 1846 and ’47\, three thousand Black New Yorkers were gifted with 120\,000 acres of Adirondack land by Gerrit Smith\, an upstate abolitionist and heir to an immense land fortune. Smith’s suffrage-minded plan was endorsed by Frederick Douglass and New York’s leading Black abolitionists. The antislavery reformer John Brown was such an advocate that in 1849 he moved his family to Timbuctoo\, a new Black neighborhood in the woods. \n\n\n\nSmith’s plan was prescient\, anticipating Black suffrage reform\, affirmative action\, environmental distributive justice\, and community-based racial equity more than a century before these were points of public policy. But when the response to Smith’s offer fell radically short of his high hopes\, Smith’s zeal cooled. Timbuctoo\, Freemen’s Home\, Blacksville\, and other Black enclaves were forgotten. Local and regional historians would marginalize the Black experience for 150 years. In The Black Woods\, Godine retrieves the robust story of Black pioneers who carved from the wilderness a future for their families and their civic rights. With stirring stories from archival sources\, Amy Godine returns these trailblazers and their descendants to their rightful place in the Adirondack narrative. This recovery is long overdue.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho is Amy Godine?\n\n\n\nAmy is a writer\, curator\, and lecturer with a longstanding interest in the social history of the Adirondack region. She has been writing articles and speaking about social trends\, marginalized communities\, and ethnic and Black neighborhoods in this high corner of New York since 1988. What do these pieces have in common beyond their focus on this region? One way or another\, they aim to challenge or confound entrenched ideas about Adirondack exceptionalism\, and reach for the guy lines that lash the region to the wider\, fractious world beyond. Miners’ strikes\, eastern European peddlers\, Klan rallies\, Spanish road workers\, the pseudo-science of eugenics and its impact on the early conservation movement\, suffrage activism\, and Black pioneers – her’s is not the Adirondack Country dear to Park historians\, nature writers or antiquarians. Amy goes for something else.

Her father was displaced in the 1967 conflict\, and her mother’s family in the 1948 Nakba. Layla embraces her Palestinian identity proudly\, striving to preserve its rich culture. Leaving the corporate world\, she founded a Middle Eastern Bakery to share her culture with the community. Layla also played a pivotal role in founding the Albany Muslim Advocacy Coalition (AMAC)\, advocating for unity and social justice. She amplifies unheard voices\, aiming for positive change and representation in her community. \n\n\n\nKanerahtiio Roger Jock is a Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) Bear Clan Leader from the Akwesasne Reserve who carries a vision of return for his people to their ancestral lands in the Mohawk Valley of New York. Kanerahtiio has taught cultural awareness all over the U.S. for over 40 years as part of the White Roots of Peace Movement. DESCRIPTION:Caña Dulce y Caña Brava offers a performance which exhibits the dance\, poetry\, and the traditional attire of Veracruz\, Mexico. These noteworthy performers\, who are beneficiaries of the Jarocho culture\, bring years of experience on both the national and international stages with them. Join us for this exciting performance! \n\n\n\n*Tickets are priced at $20 for General Admission and $10 for Student or Low-Income Admission. The Sanctuary recognizes that even with a sliding scale\, cost can affect the accessibility of any event. We want to emphasize that no one will be turned away at the door for a lack of funds. Please contact us with any questions or concerns. \n\n\n\n\n\nCaña Dulce y Caña Brava\n\n\n\nMade up mostly by women\, Caña Dulce y Caña Brava are exceptional performers of son jarocho\, a traditional Mexican expression who combines music\, dance and poetry. With a deep connection to tradition\, the group sang poetic messages with a feminine perspective\, offering a unique show within the traditionally male-dominated scene of music performers. Thanks to their dedication\, innovation and perseverance\, the group has established itself as a benchmark for son jarocho\, bringing innovation to traditional Mexican music. Caña Dulce y Caña Brava delivers a unique sound composed on top by the poetry and harmony of their voices\, floating around the vibrations of the horse jaw\, the mystical harmony of the harp and the strums of the jaranas\, while the beat is foot-tapped on stage and flashy colors emanate from their dresses. The music virtuosity of its members are deeply rooted in the jarocho tradition\, where all of them have learned directly from ancient masters and have developed and proven their skills both at national and international stages. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdriana Cao – Harp\n\n\n\nBorn in the port city of Veracruz\, her musicalformation began when she was merely a child. Herpassion and tenacity for playing the jarocha harphave positioned herself as the most well-known harp player in the son jarocho universe\, learning thetradition directly from “maestros” such as PánfiloValerio\, Nicolás Sosa and Andrés Alfonso Vergara\,amongst others. Adriana has been invited to perform with the most representative groups of son jarocho\, such as Zacamandú\, Mono Blanco\, Chuchumbé and Tembembe. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRaquel Palacios – Jarana\n\n\n\nA distinguished singer and “jaranera”\, born into one of the most respected dynasties of son jarocho music: the Vega family. Native of Boca de San Miguel\, Tlacotalpan\, Veracruz\, she has lent her unique voice and talent to diverse musical projects such as Los Utrera and Son de Madera\, and she has collaborated with Jorge Drexler\, Ernesto Anaya and Geo Meneses\, amongst other artists. In 2012\, Raquel\, alongside her family\, received the National Prize of Sciences and Arts for the cultural contributions of the Vega and Utrera families. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVioleta Romero – Jarana & Dance\n\n\n\nBorn in Mexico City\, she began her formation in music and dance from an early age\, studying in Mexico\, Guinea\, Canada and the United States. Violeta is known for her dance style that is both powerful and elegant. Over the years\, she has formed part of bands such as Tamakán\, Maíz Negro and Los Utrera. Currently\, she is a cultural producer\, band member of Caña Dulce y Caña Brava since 2013\, and cast member in Pachuquísmo (dance project based in San Francisco\, CA\, USA). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnna Arismendez – Leona\n\n\n\nMexican descent who was born and raised in Austin\, TX\, USA. Ana encountered son jarocho for the first time in 2010. Since then\, she has been an avid student of the tradition\, participating in fandangos\, and learning directly from different maestros and collectives. With persistence\, she embraced the guitarra grande (also called “leona”)\, a bass instrument not commonly played by women\, that she plays with charm and strength. Anna currently lives in Mexico City and has been a member of Caña Dulce y Caña Brava since 2016. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlonso Borja – Requinto\n\n\n\nAlonso joined the band in 2023\, but has been an active member of the Mexican music tradition since 1996\, when he founded “Chéjere”\, a widely recognized band mixing tradition with innovation\, who has performed at national and international festivals. With a major in classical guitar studies\, he has been a member of the Mexican National System of Creators since 2019\, and has received awards for his compositions\, such as the Ibermúsicas popular song composition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe zapateado (percussive dance) on the tarima (wooden platform) accentuates the beat\, while the band’s colorful wardrobe embellishes their musicality. Appealing instrumental landscapes include the captivating vibrations of the horse jaw\, the profound and mystical harmonies of the harp\, the percussive atmosphere created by the jarana\, the robust rhythm of the guitarra grande\, and the renaissance-sounding bowed instruments created ex profeso for the group\, resurrecting extinct baroque instrumentation.
