SUMMARY:Ending the Prohibition of the Mind: A Mushroom Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore the movement to decriminalize psilocybin\, the challenges faced\, and the way forward. This virtual event aims to connect local proponents to a larger movement\, and give participants information\, advocacy tools\, and connections to pursue advocacy in this area. Co-sponsored by Collar City Mushrooms and the Peoples Health Sanctuary. Watch the recording below; see the Zoom chat here! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPsilocybin\, the naturally occurring compound found in “magic mushrooms\,” was banned by the federal 1970 Controlled Substances Act. It was classified as a Schedule I controlled substance that has “no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.”  \n\n\n\nWithin the past ten years however\, research from institutions like NYU\, Johns Hopkins\, Imperial College and others have consistently demonstrated psilocybin’s ability to help treat conditions like depression\, anxiety\, OCD\, substance dependency\, and many others. \n\n\n\nThis research has propelled a grassroots movement to decriminalize psilocybin starting in the late 2010s\, with Denver\, Colorado becoming the first city to do so in May 2019. Other cities have followed suit\, such as Oakland and Santa Cruz\, CA\, Washington\, D.C.\, and Somerville and Cambridge\, MA. There are now more than 100 cities and close to a dozen states\, including New York\, considering either decriminalization or legalization of psilocybin. \n\n\n\nLike any movement to change laws\, there are several factions with often complementary but sometimes competing strategies and arguments. This panel will seek to discuss some of these issues\, such as: \n\n\n\n\nShould psilocybin use be limited to strictly medical use\, especially considering how expensive and ineffective our current healthcare system is?\n\n\n\nWhat are the differences between medical use\, therapeutic use\, and adult use?\n\n\n\nWho will have access to psilocybin? Who will be allowed to start psilocybin-related businesses?\n\n\n\nShould the movement to decriminalize psilocybin be a part of the broader movement to decriminalize all drugs?\n\n\n\nHow can we honor the cultural value of psilocybin to indigenous peoples who have been using psilocybin for centuries\, and preserve peoples’ ability to use the substance in its purest form found in nature; while others claim concern over quality control and dosage and pursue efforts to extract psilocybin and turn the substance into a commercially-produced “medicine”? \n\n\n\n\n….and many more. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nGuest Speakers include:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDee Dee Goldpaugh\, LCSW\, psychotherapist\, educator\, activist \n\n\n\nDee Dee Goldpaugh\, is a psychotherapist\, educator\, and activist in Woodstock\, NY. Dee Dee specializes in Psychedelic Integration Therapy with a focus on LGBTQIA+ people as well as survivors of sexual trauma. They are a member of the Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy team at the Woodstock Therapy Center and they are the Community Integration and Support Director of the Hudson Valley Psychedelic Society. Dee Dee has taught and published widely on psychedelics and mental health\, sexuality\, and trauma. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHadas Alterman\, attorney\, Plant Medicine Law Group \n\n\n\nHadas is an Israeli-American attorney\, born in Jerusalem and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. Hadas advises companies on matters of regulatory compliance\, corporate transactions\, policy advocacy\, strategic planning\, governance\, and dispute resolution. She was the Policy Director of NYMHA\, an organization that she co-founded that successfully lobbied for the introduction of a New York bill to decriminalize psilocybin. She is a Board Member of the American Psychedelic Practitioner’s Association and a Founding Board Member of the Psychedelic Bar Association. Hadas serves on the Equity Subcommittee of the Oregon Psilocybin Advisory Board. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNoah Potter\, consultant\, Legal Market Strategies \n\n\n\nBrooklyn-based Noah Potter is a psychedelic policy consultant who joined the psychedelic legalization movement in 1993. He writes the blog Psychedelic Law. He has worked to call attention to the racial disparities of drug law enforcement\, and in 2020 co-founded an advocacy group dedicated to psychedelic law reform in New York. He has advised the Decriminalize Denver campaign\, and advocates immediate\, safe\, and equitable (affordable\, culturally-relevant\, and non-exploitative) access to a psychedelic experience for anyone anywhere who could benefit from it. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDmitri Mugianis\, activist\, musician\, poet\, writer\, and psychedelic practitioner \n\n\n\nDimitri Mugianis is an activist\, musician\, poet\, harm reductionist and writer with over two decades of experience as a frontline harm reduction worker and psychedelic practitioner. He is a co-founder of Cardea. Dimitri’s story and work have been featured in numerous media outlets including The New York Times\, Village Voice\, Rolling Stone\, NPR’s This American Life\, VICE HBO\, The Daily Beast\, and Crimetown podcast. He was the subject of the 2009 documentary “Dangerous with Love” by Michael Negroponte. He has written for Chacruna\, Salon\, The Guardian\, and Jacobin. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPamela Jackson\, Founder and Director\, Psychedelic Sisterhood \n\n\n\nPammy Jackson is the founder and executive director of the womxn-led\, not-for-profit organization\, The Psychedelic Sisterhood. Pammy started The Psychedelic Sisterhood to provide womxn with a safe space to discuss\, learn\, and share experiences about the healing power of psychedelics and reclaim the association of medicinal plants as their original indigenous source; offering an inclusive environment to thrive and grow.The Psychedelic Sisterhood also collaborates with like-minded organizations for psychedelic advocacy and to support drug policy reform. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLinda Rosenthal\, NYS Assemblymember\, sponsor of A6065 \n\n\n\nAssemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal represents the 67th Assembly District\, which includes the Upper West Side and parts of Hell’s Kitchen. Since taking office in 2006\, Assemblymember Rosenthal has passed more than 140 laws that have helped to improve the lives of all New York State residents. In 2021\, Assemblymember Rosenthal passed legislation into law establishing a medication assisted treatment program for people battling a substance use disorder in state and local correctional facilities. She also is the sponsor of legislation to authorize safer consumption sites throughout New York State\, a cause she has championed since 2016. Assemblymember Rosenthal sponsors two bills related to psilocybin: A6065\, which would decriminalize psilocybin by removing it from the list of scheduled substances; and A7928\, which would establish the psychedelic research institute and the psychedelic substances therapeutic research program charged with studying and providing recommendations regarding the use of psychedelic substances in the treatment of addictive disorders\, depression\, post-traumatic stress disorder\, end-of-life anxiety and other pertinent outcomes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPat Burke\, NYS Assemblymember\, sponsor of A8569 \n\n\n\nPat Burke hails from Buffalo and was first elected to represent the 142nd Assembly District in 2019. Assemblymember Burke’s notable legislative accomplishments include a ban on microbead plastics\, a repeal of Sunday Blue Laws\, a million-dollar emergency fund created to combat the opioid crisis and the formation of the Erie County Broadband Committee. He also introduced legislation that would make the pharmaceutical industry pay its fair share to keep our local drinking water free of medical waste\, and not pass the burden onto taxpayers. Assemblymember Burke sponsors A8569\, a bill that would amend the public health law to allow for the medical use of psilocybin in a tightly controlled set of circumstances. \n\n\n\n\n\nModerators:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCorinne Carey\, co-moderator \n\n\n\nCorinne Carey is a lawyer and a political and public affairs strategist who takes on bold public health initiatives backed by sound evidence and human rights principles. SUMMARY:We're All Living in the Estroworld
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this virtual session of the series BioArt Talks @CBIS\, presented in conjunction with RPI’s Center for Biotechnology\, the ARTS department & the School of Humanities\, Arts and Social Sciences\, and the Sanctuary’s NATURE Lab.  \n\n\n\nHow do bodies queer at the molecular level? How is this queering inextricably tied to industrial capitalism? Combining body and gender politics and environmental toxicity\, we begin to unpack the concept of “open source estrogen\,” the underlying premise that hormonal molecules are ubiquitously all around us – available for us to hack\, mutate\, and become-with. Through this process of unboxing their molecular mystique\, we see that even in our sublime sea of toxic molecules\, it is still a sea of co-mattering. With our extractive tools we can see only the tiniest picture in the macro cosmos of space and time. But perhaps this is all we need to transmute the traumas of our old world into the new. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMary Maggic (b. Los Angeles\, ’91) is a nonbinary artist working at the intersection of hormones\, body and gender politics\, and ecological alienations. Maggic frequently uses “biohacking” as a xeno-feminist practice of care that potentially demystifies invisible lines of molecular biopower. Completing their Masters in the Design Fiction group at MIT Media Lab\, they received the Prix Ars Electronica Honorary Mention in Hybrid Arts (2017) for the project “Open Source Estrogen” and a 10-month Fulbright research award in Yogyakarta\, Indonesia (2019). Bhawin also co-directs NeXt Doc\, a year-round fellowship program that exists to amplify the voices of documentary filmmakers of color between the ages of 20-24 years old. Bhawin is the co-director\, producer\, cinematographer and editor of Outta The Muck (2022)\, a feature length documentary supported by ITVS\, JustFilms\, Sundance\, and Southern Documentary Fund. He previously co-directed\, The Throwaways (2014) with Ira Mckinley\, and Free To Learn (2004). \n\n\n\nIRA MCKINLEYDIRECTOR/PRODUCER/WRITER\n\n\n\nIra McKinley is a filmmaker and activist and the director/producer of the award-winning documentary The Throwaways. Born in Upstate New York he is now based in South Florida where Outta The Muck is set. Ira started his activism in the 1980’s when he participated in Act Up in Ithaca\, NY. During the winters of 2007/2008 he started a Homeless Arts Showcase in Northampton\, MA’s Pulaski Park which was inspired by his fifteen years being homeless himself. Ira is the recipient of the 2014 ACLU Carol S. Knox award\, 2013 MLK Storytelling + Activist Award from Siena College\, 2009 Northampton Arts Council’s Emerging Filmmaker Award\, and was the 2009 Producer of the Year for Northampton Community Television. We will notify ticket holders if the protocols change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks a local pizza shop owner and the Imam of an Albany mosque found themselves at the center of an elaborate FBI sting operation.  A convicted felon was sent undercover to lure the young men into a criminal plot as part of a plea bargain.  They spent most of the next twenty years in prison while their accuser went on to a prominent role in the 2018 Schoharie limousine crash.  Witness explores the difficult balance between civil liberties and security with a searing look at the impact of the War on Terror on everyday life. \n\n\n\nWitnessDoc.com \n\n\n\nJoin us before the film screening for the Be The Media! workshop: “The Struggle to Tell Your Story\,” with Masood Haque  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWitness touches on a host of contemporary issues\, ranging from the War on Terror to the balance between civil liberties and security. Most importantly\, it examines the idea of due process. In pursuit of security\, the American legal system is turned upside down. In cases involving terrorism\, there is an almost automatic presumption of guilt based on fear\, which is then exploited by prosecutors\, who portray ordinary people as dangerous threats to safety and security. Thus\, the jury system becomes an extension of law enforcement. Juries feel obligated to convict heavily bearded Muslim men with exotic\, unpronounceable names because of their implicit faith in law enforcement and the FBI\, and because of their fear that by acquitting\, they might let a real terrorist go free. \n\n\n\nWitness also grapples with the idea of preemptive prosecutions\, used against hundreds of Muslims. Orwellian in its conceit\, preemptive prosecutions target those deemed dangerous by engaging them in a variety of fictional plots and stress-testing their ideology in the quest to “prevent the next one.” Thus American law enforcement uses fear once again\, this time to undermine long-standing\, cherished legal principles. Ultimately Witness asks the question: How far are we willing to go to create the illusion of safety for ourselves? \n\n\n\nWitness also examines the role of media in becoming an arm of the government’s disinformation campaign. Even though the print media acquitted itself well in the coverage of this case\, asking critical questions that often earned the wrath of the prosecution\, local television news reporters bought the government’s contrived story hook\, line\, and sinker. These reporters parroted the government’s often-dubious claims as fact\, thus becoming a tool for manipulating public sentiment. The day the story broke\, several reporters were told by FBI agents that the initial sheet of charges would outline the men’s involvement with terrorist organizations\, yet in the actual court documents there was no mention of such connections––leaving some reporters to wonder on air what had happened to these nefarious ties.  Check out more about the story here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMasood Haque: Producer/ Director\n\n\n\nMasood Haque graduated from NYU and subsequently received his MFA in documentary film production from CUNY. We commemorate this anniversary not with flag waving and homogenized messages\, but by celebrating the people-power and tools dedicated to creating independent media as the essence of freedom. \n\n\n\nSeptember 11\, 2017 was the day HMM launched. Volunteer journalists joined together\, dedicated to tell the stories that corporate media leaves untold. In 2017\, they were joined by Amaria Hamadalher\, a fixture on the Agadez guitar scene\, and Abdoulaye Madassane\, rhythm guitarist and a son of Illighadad. Les Filles de Illighadad’s music draws from two distinct styles of regional sound\, ancient village choral chants and desert guitar. The result is a groundbreaking new direction for Tuareg folk music and a sound that resonates far outside of their village. In the past years\, the band has toured nonstop\, bringing their highly specific sound to distant corners of the globe. \n\n\n\nLes Filles de Illighadad’s third full-length\, At Pioneer Works\, was recorded over two sold-out shows in Brooklyn\, NY in Fall 2019 at the tail-end of two years of nonstop touring in support of the band’s 2017 album Eghass Malan. Writing about the shows for The New Yorker\, music critic Amanda Petrusich writes: “The crowd in Brooklyn was entranced\, nearly reverent. Les Filles’ music is mesmeric\, almost prayer-like\, which can leave an audience agog… whatever rhythm does to a human body—it was happening.”

Fifty minutes in length\, performed by a five- member company\, and featuring live music and a myriad of puppet figures ranging from 12 inches to 12 feet tall\, the show reminds earthly residents of all ages how profoundly essential the ground beneath their feet is. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArm-of-the-Sea Theater’s mission is to inspire wonder\, offer insight\, spark joy and enrich the public imagination. They accomplish their mission through the symbolic visual language of mask and puppet theater. This handmade\, low-tech form of communication is decentralized and locally adapted. It can bridge language barriers and engage people of many ages and walks of life.  \n\n\n\nArm-of-the-Sea was founded in 1982 by Marlena Marallo and Patrick Wadden as an experimental hybrid performance group combining art\, ecology and social action. Aballow Yattara is the current group leader. Other members of the group are his uncle Aboubacrine Yattara and their sons Mohamed Ag Abellow and Tchiale Ag Aboubacrine.  \n\n\n\nAbellow and Aboubacrine Yattara began to play the tehardant\, a three-stringed fretless instrument that some refer to as precursor to modern banjo\, when they were adolescents. Both their fathers were master musicians. His uncle can be heard on the first recordings of traditional music in Northern Mali. Abellow Yattara can be heard on early recordings by Ali Farka Toure\, on 1970’s recordings of the Orchestre de Tombouctou\, and many Radio Mali broadcasts. Resulting borderization in the twenty-first century continues as such\, now with blurred divides between the flow of goods and the blockage of human beings. Supply chain disruptions and queued shipping containers and the US invocation of Title 42 and “Stay in Mexico” policies\, while never comparable\, are in equal measure “products” of COVID-19. \n\n\n\nAmong others\, the artists will reflect on the influences\, production and distribution challenges\, and discordant reception of the collective’s Transborder Immigrant Tool\, a project that debuted fifteen years ago. This project consists of an app designed to provide sustenance in grueling desert conditions like those that abut the US-Mexico Border. The app consists of poetry and a navigational system that points users toward water sources provided by humanitarian aid organizations like Water Station Inc. \n\n\n\nThe talk includes  a discussion of Carroll and Dominguez’s new work-in-progress theater production\, “The Flight of the Palindrone.” This project instrumentalizes drone activity to provide a sonic theatrical intervention that plays on surveillance technologies in the Mexican-U.S. borderlands\, the participation of the University of California\, San Diego (the artists’ own institution) in the research and development of unmanned aerial vehicles\, and regional eco-catastrophe—all within the context of Carroll and Dominguez’s continued commitment to translanguaging and the artivist gesture.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n***In line with our commitment to equity\, love and justice\, we ask that you please keep your mask on at our indoor events.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Electronic Disturbance Theater 2.0 is made up of members included Brett Stalbaum\, Amy Sara Carroll\, Elle Mehrmand\, Micha Cárdenas\, and Ricardo Dominguez. Founded in 1997 as Electronic Disturbance Theater by Ricardo Dominguez\, Brett Stalbaum\, Stefan Wray and Carmin Karasic\, this collective organized and programmed computer software demonstrating their anti-propagandist and military actions. Micronetworks were activated in direct digital actions like virtual sit-ins to prevent website access and other non-violent acts of defiance across and between digital and non-digital spaces. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRicardo Dominguez is chair of the Department of the Visual Arts\, University of California\, San Diego. He is a founding member of Critical Art Ensemble and a cofounder of Electronic Disturbance Theater 1.0 (EDT)\, a group which developed virtual sit-in technologies in solidarity with the Zapatistas communities in Chiapas\, Mexico in 1998. His recent Electronic Disturbance Theater 2.0 / b.a.n.g. lab project with Brett Stalbaum\, Micha Cardenas\, Amy Sara Carroll\, and Elle Mehrmand\, the Transborder Immigrant Tool (a GPS cell phone safety net tool for crossing the Mexico/US border) was the winner of “Transnational Communities Award” (2008) and funded by CALIT2 and the UCSD Center for the Humanities. The Transborder Immigrant Tool was also under investigation by the US Congress\, the FBI\, Homeland Security\, UCSD\, and UCOP in 2009-2010. It was also reviewed by Glenn Beck in 2010 as a gesture that potentially “dissolved”  the U.S. border with its poetry. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmy Sara Carroll is Associate Professor of Literature and Writing at the University of California\, San Diego and is a member of Electronic Disturbance Theater 2.0 since 2008. For the collective she co-produced the Transborder Immigrant Tool. Her books include Secession\, Fannie + Freddie: The Sentimentality of Post-9/11 Pornography\, and REMEX: Toward an Art History of the NAFTA Era. She coauthored with other members of EDT 2.0 several plays and [({   })] The Desert Survival Series/La Serie de Sobrevivencia del Desierto. Of chief concern is the collision of bodies (human and non) with rapidly evolving techno-ecosystems. If collision can be understood to be a form of disturbance (in the ecological sense)\, then in disturbance we move through damage to an opportunity for renewal. SUMMARY:Salon Séance: "The End of Time"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interdisciplinary presentation combining live classical music with visual and theatrical storytelling. This is the regional premiere of The End of Time\, an immersive experience with themes of trauma and healing\, by Salon Séance. The performance will be followed by an audience conversation about the music and re-interpretations of the themes as seen from the eyes of youth and community members today. The End of Time was inspired by Quartet for the End of Time by composer Olivier Messiaen.   \n\n\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the Friends of Chamber Music. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n***In line with our commitment to equity\, love and justice\, we ask that you please keep your mask on at our indoor events.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSalon Séance creates a new ritual to experience the intersection between music\, history\, and our lives. The End of Time is centered around the French composer Olivier Messiaen and his masterwork Quartet for the End of Time\, written and premiered during his captivity at the prisoner-of-war camp in Görlitz\, Germany during WW2 in 1941. It explores the theme of hope in times of desperation through stories that inspired Messiaen to compose this work: the stories of the musicians that premiered this work and the story of the Book of Revelation. The musical work\, which embodies the collective experience of captivity as well as the concept of a renewal after the End of Time\, become a source of hope for the future as the most destructive war in history was raging.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFounded by Mari Lee and Simon Lee\, Salon Séance is a live experience channeling kindred spirits through music and the ritual of seance. Developed in interdisciplinary collaboration with world-class performers and creators\, our seances bring composers\, audiences\, and performers to experience the intersection between music and our lives. The heavily armed attackers quickly took control of the building and held more than a hundred employees of the organization hostage inside. A little over an hour later\, three more men entered the Islamic Center of Washington\, the country’s largest and most important mosque\, and took hostages there. Two others subsequently penetrated the District Building\, a few hundred yards from the White House. When a firefight broke out\, a reporter was killed\, and Marion Barry\, later to become mayor of Washington\, D.C.\, was shot in the chest. The deadly standoff brought downtown Washington to a standstill. \n\n\n\nThe attackers belonged to the Hanafi Movement\, an African American Muslim group based in D.C. Their leader was a former jazz drummer named Hamaas Abdul Khaalis\, who had risen through the ranks of the Nation of Islam before feuding with the organization’s mercurial chief\, Elijah Muhammad\, and becoming a spiritual authority to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Like Malcolm X\, Khaalis had become sharply critical of the Nation’s unorthodox style of Islam. And\, like Malcolm X\, he paid dearly for his outspokenness: In 1973\, followers of the Nation murdered seven Hanafis at their headquarters\, including several members of Khaalis’s family. When they took hostages in 1977\, one of the Hanafis’ demands was for the murderers\, along with Muhammad Ali and Elijah’s son\, to be turned over to the group to face justice. They also demanded that the American premiere of Mohammad: Messenger of God—an epic about the life of the prophet Muhammad financed and supported by the Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi—be canceled and the film destroyed. The lives of 149 hostages hung in the balance\, and the United States’ fledgling counterterrorism forces—as yet untested—would have to respond. \n\n\n\nShahan Mufti’s American Caliph gives a full account of the largest ever hostage taking on American soil and of the man who masterminded it.
