DESCRIPTION:The Sanctuary is honored to welcome the sounds of The Halluci Nation to Troy\, NY! The Halluci Nation is a Canadian electronic music group who blend instrumental hip hop\, reggae\, moombahton and dubstep-influenced dance music with elements of First Nations music including vocal chanting and drumming.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Halluci Nation maintains focus on what they feel they can impact most: how Indigenous people are seen. Through groundbreaking stage shows and ever-changing visuals\, Bear Witness and 2oolman are working to create media that reflects the modern day Indigenous identity. They see themselves simply as contributors to a necessary conversation around a subtle and complex representation of the contemporary Indigenous experience.  \n\n\n\n\nAbout the artist: As they enter a new cycle\, Bear Witness and Tim “2oolman” Hill of A Tribe Called Red are reintroducing themselves as The Halluci Nation\, to reflect the evolution of their music and mission. The Halluci Nation\, takes its name from a phrase coined by John Trudell\, to describe the vast global community of people who remember at their core what it means to be human. As a visionary artist and activist\, Trudell recognized the connection between his accomplishments and what ATCR did intuitively through music and art…. \n\n\n\nThe next chapter for The Halluci Nation has them further exploring the boundaries of cross genre collaborations. In the Spring of 2023 they released a high powered collaboration with Punk-Rock Band “F*cked Up” which featured covers of “Electroshock” by Danger Rhythm\, and “John Wayne was a Nazi” by MDC. This was just a small look into the creative mindset and production capabilities that Bear Witness and 2oolman possess…  \n\n\n\nThis is just the START of THE HALLUCI NATION.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis concert is part of the Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail project\, dedicated to celebrating the sacred Mohican soils we are honored to tend. We are beneficiaries of millennia of human history unfolding in a majestic river valley\, where the land has been nurtured by Indigenous hands and traumatized through industrial development and systemic inequity. \n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail embeds art\, culture\, history\, and ecology into an urban nature walk on 6th Avenue in North Troy\, weaving a journey from Glen Avenue to 101st Street and Freedom Square. Visitors will engage with stories of environmental justice\, ecological restoration\, and the living legacy of Indigenous presence on these lands through sculptures\, gardens\, multimedia\, murals\, concerts and live events and workshops. Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail is funded by a National Endowment for the Arts Our Town creative placemaking grant.

DESCRIPTION:Hudson Mohawk Magazine (HMM) is radio for the community\, by community volunteers. If you are curious about the radio and have questions\, if you’re interested in getting involved\, or if you need some support in production\, these open hours are a perfect time to come to the main Sanctuary space to work directly with HMM producers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur volunteer HMM producers come with a range of skills and experiences. Many volunteers join with little to no experience. These sessions give support to producers of all levels. This is also an opportunity to train new engineers and hosts.  \n\n\n\nJoin our excellent team of grassroots journalists and report on local stories that interest you. SUMMARY:Be The Media! Positioning Yourself as Subject in Documentary Filmmaking
DESCRIPTION:Learn from “Confessions of a Good Samaritan” Director Penny Lane’s decision to position herself as director\, film subject\, and kidney donor!  \n\n\n\nAfter the workshop\, stick around for a screening of “Confessions of a Good Samaritan” and a talk by the filmmaker! \n\n\n\nDirector’s Statement\n\n\n\nEvery film is a personal film. At least\, I think so. \n\n\n\nBut of course there’s something different about a film in which you\, the director\, decide to put your own dumb face at the center of it. On a selfish level\, it would have been much easier and less embarrassing to do the kidney donation privately\, and to forget all the ugly parts. \n\n\n\nUltimately what kept me going is that\, simply put\, there has never been a feature documentary about an organ donor. Certainly there has never been a feature documentary about a “Good Samaritan” kidney donor who will never meet her recipient\, the hopes and challenges she faces along the way\, a film that shows how the loftiest spiritual ideas can fall and break upon meeting the bureaucracy of medicine\, what the donor learned about the part\, present\, and future of organ transplant from both ethical and scientific points of view – a film with a sense of humor and a theremin score! So even if my fears about making this film were pretty huge (for obvious reasons?) I knew there was this unique\, probably important work of art floating out there in the ether\, begging to be given form. More than any other film I’ve made\, Confessions of a Good Samaritan felt like a calling\, as if it chose me. In this way\, the experience of making the film was similar to the experience of donating my kidney. Not exactly fun\, definitely difficult\, but ultimately rewarding\, and the most important spiritual experience I have ever had. I feel honored\, humbled and grateful for it all (even the embarrassing parts!). \n\n\n\nUltimately\, this isn’t much of an advocacy film; the “call to action” is not that people should donate their kidneys (although I think more people probably should). I see it more as an inquiry into the nature of altruism\, a relentless self-examination\, and a compelling moral challenge. \n\n\n\n\nPenny Lane (Director) has been making award-winning\, innovative nonfiction films for over a decade. This includes six features – most recently Confessions of a Good Samaritan\, premiering at SXSW 2023 – and over a dozen short films. A 2020 Guggenheim Fellow\, Lane has also received grants and awards from the Sundance Film Festival\, Cinereach\, Creative Capital\, Chicken & Egg Pictures\, Tribeca Film Institute\, Wexner Center for the Arts and many others. Penny has been honored with mid-career retrospectives at the Museum of the Moving Image\, San Francisco DocFest\, Open City Documentary Festival and Cinema Moderne. She is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. And yes\, Penny Lane is her real name.

DESCRIPTION:Director Penny Lane returns to the Sanctuary to screen her latest film Confessions of a Good Samaritan about her own experience deciding to become a “Good Samaritan” by giving one of her kidneys to a stranger. This launches her on an unexpectedly funny\, intimate\, and provocative quest to understand why everyone seems to think she’s crazy. \n\n\n\nAt 5pm\, join Penny Lane for the Be The Media! workshop: Positioning Yourself as Subject in Documentary Filmmaking \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConfessions of a Good Samaritan is a provocative inquiry into the science\, history\, and ethics of organ transplantation\, asking an ancient question in a whole new way: who is your neighbor\, and what do you owe them? We’ve all heard versions of this question\, but how often do we really stop to think about its meaning? \n\n\n\n“Good Samaritan” kidney donation is a term used to describe the exceptionally rare circumstance in which a person is moved to donate a kidney\, not to a friend or a loved one\, but to an unknown stranger. The small number of people per year who make this choice often describe it as a “no-brainer”: I could have a relatively low-risk procedure\, and save someone’s life? Obviously! With more than 100\,000 people in need of a kidney\, slowly dying on dialysis\, for the Good Samaritan donors\, the only question is\, “Why isn’t there a line of people out the door waiting to give a kidney?” \n\n\n\nBut\, for the vast majority of people\, making a “Good Samaritan” donation is incomprehensible\, or suspicious in some way. Why do they do it? Do these people just want attention? What are they compensating for? This mystery is what sets Penny off on her quest to understand the science of altruism\, the ethical controversies surrounding organ donation\, and her own motivations. \n\n\n\nAlong the way she collects a library of rare\, often strange\, archival films documenting the history of organ transplantation. Accompanied by a quirky cast of charismatic scientists\, surgeons\, ethicists\, and other donors\, Penny documents her experience through “confessional” diaries and intimate footage of her own surgery and recovery. All of these elements are assembled into a fast-paced\, funny\, personal and philosophical collage. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPenny Lane (Director) has been making award-winning\, innovative nonfiction films for over a decade.
