DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed environmentalist Bill McKibben will be at the Sanctuary to share his hope for our future in Here Comes the Sun\, a call to harness the power of the sun and rewrite our scientific\, economic\, and political future. Join us for this book talk\, Q&A\, and book signing with McKibben\, one of the first to sound the alarm about the climate crisis. McKibben will also be our special guest for a fundraiser dinner! This dinner will be an intimate gourmet vegan meal by extraordinary chef Intaba Liff-Anderson. \n\n\n\nHere Comes the Sun is a book about a last chance for the climate and a fresh chance for civilization by Bill McKibben\, an author\, environmentalist\, and activist. In 1988 he wrote The End of Nature\, the first book for a common audience about global warming. McKibben comes to the Sanctuary for a talk on his latest book\, followed by a Q&A and book signing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur climate\, and our democracy\, are melting down. But Bill McKibben\, one of the first to sound the alarm about the climate crisis\, insists the moment is also full of possibility. Energy from the sun and wind is suddenly the cheapest power on the planet and growing faster than any energy source in history—if we can keep accelerating the pace\, we have a chance. \n\n\n\nHere Comes the Sun tells the story of the sudden spike in power from the sun and wind—and the desperate fight of the fossil fuel industry and their politicians to hold this new power at bay. From the everyday citizens who installed solar panels equal to a third of Pakistan’s electric grid in a year to the world’s sixth-largest economy—California—nearly halving its use of natural gas in the last two years\, Bill McKibben traces the arrival of plentiful\, inexpensive solar energy. And he shows how solar power is more than just a path out of the climate crisis: it is a chance to reorder the world on saner and more humane grounds. You can’t hoard solar energy or hold it in reserves—it’s available to all. \n\n\n\nThere’s no guarantee we can make this change in time\, but there is a hope—in McKibben’s eyes\, our best hope for a new civilization: one that looks up to the sun\, every day\, as the star that fuels our world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBill McKibben is founder of Third Act\, which organizes people over the age of 60 for action on climate and justice. \n\n\n\nHis 1989 book The End of Nature is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change\, and has appeared in 24 languages. He’s gone on to write 20 books\, and his work appears regularly in periodicals from the New Yorker to Rolling Stone. He serves as the Schumann Distinguished Scholar in Environmental Studies at Middlebury College\, as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, and he has won the Gandhi Peace Prize as well as honorary degrees from 20 colleges and universities. He was awarded the Right Livelihood Award\, sometimes called the alternative Nobel\, in the Swedish Parliament. Foreign Policy named him to its inaugural list of the world’s 100 most important global thinkers. \n\n\n\nMcKibben helped found 350.org\, the first global grassroots climate campaign\, which has organized protests on every continent\, including Antarctica\, for climate action. He played a leading role in launching the opposition to big oil pipeline projects like Keystone XL\, and the fossil fuel divestment campaign\, which has become the biggest anti-corporate campaign in history\, with endowments worth more than $40 trillion stepping back from oil\, gas and coal. He stepped down as board chair of 350 in 2015\, and left the board and stepped down from his volunteer role as senior adviser in 2020\, accepting emeritus status. He lives in the mountains above Lake Champlain with his wife\, the writer Sue Halpern\, where he spends as much time as possible outdoors. Her debut film was the award winning Ohero:kon – Under the Husk a 26-min documentary following the journey of two Mohawk girls as they take part in their traditional passage rites to becoming Mohawk Women. She directed and co-produced a short – doc series for REMATRIATION – a Native American women’s online\, multi-media magazine. It is focused on healing and empowerment of Native women through the sharing of their stories and successes. Her most recent film\, Without a Whisper – Konnon:kwe is untold story of how Indigenous women influenced the early suffragists in their fight for freedom and equality. She is currently in production for Kanenon:we – Original Seeds a documentary on Indigenous women seed keepers protecting and rematriating our seed relatives for future generations. \n\n\n\nKatsitsionni Fox was interviewed by Kahstoserakwathe Paulette Moore for The Aunties Dandelion. Hear the full episode here.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAn inspirational speaker\, writer and thought leader\, Michelle Schenandoah is a traditional member of the Oneida Nation Wolf Clan of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. She is the founder of the non-profit Rematriation. She is focused on leadership development and the reclaiming of Indigenous women’s traditional roles among their nations. The producer for the short documentary\, “An Indigenous Response to #MeToo” and “Rematriation’s Indigenous Women’s Voices” 9-part series. She is the host for an online talk show for Indigenous women called\, “Pine Tree Talks.” She and her husband\, Neal Powless\, also operate Indigenous Concepts Consulting with the goal of incorporating Indigenous perspectives into the mainstream\, and in existing business and media paradigms. She served as a senior strategist for Blue Stone Strategy Group\, providing economic and governance consulting for Indigenous nations across the country. She has an extensive background in law\, business development\, and consulting. Raised in Southwest Florida and based in New York\, Wortzel specifically attends to sites and stories systematically erased or ignored from these regions’ histories. RIVER OF GRASS (2025) is her first feature documentary. The film won the Pare Lorentz Award from IDA\, Hot Docs Joan VanDuzer Special Jury Prize – International Feature Documentary\, and Mead Audience Award\, among others. The film received institutional support from Sundance\, Ford Foundation\, Sandbox Films\, Knight Foundation\, Doc Society\, Field of Vision\, and Chicken & Egg Pictures.

SUMMARY:Everybody Has a Story To Tell Radio Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Sanctuary for a session of recording community stories in audio form. Our radio program Hudson Mohawk Magazine (HMM) is a volunteer created news program which platforms stories related to our local community. Everybody Has a Story to Tell is a opportunity for HMM producers to support others in the recording of their own stories.  \n\n\n\nThis radio format is Inspired by Storycorp whose mission is “to help us believe in each other by illuminating the humanity and possibility in us all — one story at a time.” There is no better time than now to come to the Sanctuary with a partner to record your story to be included in a community audio archive.  \n\n\n\nBring someone important in your life (family member\, neighbor\, mentor…) to this workshop where you will be guided upon how to conduct an interview\, offered question suggestions\, and then you will be given the opportunity to be paired with volunteer producer to do a radio recording or to record your interview at a later time on your own.  \n\n\n\nAlthough we hope to air these stories on our radio program\, that part is not obligatory.  We also invite you to join us for a community brunch right before the workshop.

Stay after the viewing for a short group discussion about the documentary \n\n\n\nAbout this Film\n\n\n\n1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture is a feature documentary that follows the story of tireless researchers who trace the origins of the anti-gay movement among Christians to a grave mistranslation of the Bible in 1946. It chronicles the discovery of never-before-seen archives at Yale University which unveil astonishing new revelations\, and casts significant doubt on any biblical basis for LGBTQIA+ prejudice. Featuring commentary from prominent scholars as well as opposing pastors\, including the personal stories of the film’s creators\, 1946 is at once challenging\, enlightening\, and inspiring. While other documentaries have been successful in their attempt to treat the symptom of homophobia in the church\, 1946 is working to diagnose and treat the disease – Biblical Literalism. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Co-sponsors\n\n\n\nCollar City Pride is Rensselaer County’s only LGBTQIA2S+ based and operating community center hub\, providing services and events to uplift our queer community. \n\n\n\nNew Breath Spirituality Center is a place where we can learn and talk about connecting with God\, spirituality\, and prayer/spiritual practices– as well as try some out for ourselves.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book talk about North Stars of Emancipation: California’s Diverse Food and Farming Movements in Times of Racial Reckoning\, with author Antonio Roman-Alcalá. A panel with local food justice advocates from Soul Fire Farm\, the Radix Center\, and Serenity Solidarity will discuss food movements in the Capital Region. Books will be available for sale by Greenlight Books. \n\n\n\nNorth Stars of Emancipation traces the recent evolution of California’s food movements towards a more liberatory model grounded in diverse radical traditions. Drawing on his work in urban farming\, radical politics\, and academic research\, author Antonio Roman-Alcalá will discuss the themes of his book with local food justice advocates. \n\n\n\nAbout this Book\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow we grow\, harvest\, distribute\, and consume food is bound up with how we use (and abuse) environmental resources\, and how we achieve (or undermine) collective well-being. In North Stars of Emancipation\, Antonio Roman-Alcalá finds in the radical experiments of new food movements the seeds of a world liberated from old\, extractive systems\, where a more equitable way of eating and living is possible. \n\n\n\nThe book traces the transformation of California’s diverse food movements as Black\, Indigenous\, Latinx\, and other people of color have come to play a larger organizational role\, especially at a time of toxic national politics. A new vision now guides these movements\, rooted in the radical traditions of anarchism\, Black radicalism\, and Indigenous resurgence\, yet focused on pragmatic solutions to the problems of market and state. In pursuing a North Star political ideal that rejects capitalism\, colonialism\, and state violence while prioritizing survival\, California’s food movements have achieved greater collaboration among sectors\, workers\, and consumers\, pointing toward a promising future. \n\n\n\n\n\nNorth Stars of Emancipation takes the rare step of analyzing movements as interconnected wholes. She co-founded Serenity Solidarity\, a Black and Indigenous-led land project in the capital region\, and is developing Mumia House there\, dedicated to political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal. She is a member of New York State Jails Justice Network\, and is motivated by ending colonization and the suffering of her people. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nScott Kellogg is the Educational Director at the Radix Center\, an urban ecological literacy and just sustainabilities advocacy non-profit in Albany\, New York. Radix runs a one-acre farm in the middle of the city that teaches local youth about gardening\, composting\, tree planting\, and river activism. He currently also teaches at Bard College’s Center for Environment and Policy and is Chair of Urban Agriculture for the Albany Sustainability Commission.
