SUMMARY:DIY Air Purifier Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Air Justice Lab and Clean Air Capital Region are hosting a workshop to build a Corsi-Rosenthal Box (DIY air purifier) while discussing air quality issues and the intersections of environmental\, health\, and disability justice.  \n\n\n\nUnhealthy air quality got you down? Want to slow the spread of viruses over the holidays? Join us to build a Corsi-Rosenthal box! We will supply building materials and guide you through the construction. Come solo or bring a friend! \n\n\n\nAt this workshop\, we will work together to build DIY air purifiers using a box fan\, a furnace filter\, and cardboard! We will be able to supply free materials for up to 12 builds. Items will be supplied in order of first registered for the event. \n\n\n\nRegistration for this limited event is FULL.High quality masks/respirators (such as N95s) will be required and provided for all attendees. \n\n\n\nClean Air Capital Region is a mutual aid project that is hosted by the Sanctuary for Independent Media. Donations will support the Sanctuary so they can continue to offer community events like this one. \n\n\n\nAccess info:\n\n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary and upstairs bathroom are wheelchair accessible. There is a ramp at the entrance of the Sanctuary.\n\n\n\nPlease do not wear any fragrances. We will not use aerosols in the space before the event.\n\n\n\nRapid antigen testing for COVID-19 is required on day-of event for all attendees. If you need a free rapid test\, please show up to the event 20 minutes early (1:40pm) and we will supply you with a test.\n\n\n\nAll participants are required to wear a high-quality respirator (minimum KN95\, N95 preferred) throughout the entire workshop. If a participant needs to unmask\, please go outside\, and maintain at least 10 feet from any other workshop participants.

SUMMARY:Chris Hedges: Normalizing Genocide and the New World Order
DESCRIPTION:Chris Hedges will return to the Sanctuary for Independent Media to give the talk “Normalizing Genocide and the New World Order” which asks how the world has changed since the genocide began\, how we navigate a world without rules or humanitarian law and how the genocidal violence perpetuated by the Global North\, especially as the climate crisis deepens\, will be turned with ever more frequency on the peoples of the Global South. \n\n\n\n\n\nChris Hedges\, the former Middle East Bureau Chief for The New York Times\, is a Pulitzer-prize winning reporter and Arabic speaker. He spent 7 years covering the conflict between Israel and Palestine. He is the author of numerous books including the New York Times bestsellers War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning\, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America and Days of Destruction\, Days of Revolt\, which he co-authored with the cartoonist Joe Sacco. He has taught at Columbia University\, New York University\, Princeton University\, and the University of Toronto. He has also taught students in the college degree program offered by Rutgers University in the New Jersey prison system for a decade\, the subject of his book Our Class: Trauma and Transformation in an American Prison. DESCRIPTION:An act of creative resistance to Apartheid\, No Other Land documents a Palestinian activist and his unlikely alliance with an Israeli journalist\, as he searches for a path towards equality and justice. Join us for this film screening and panel discussion. \n\n\n\nNo Other Land is the 2025 Oscar winner for Best Documentary Feature\, a major win for a film that couldn’t get a U.S. distributor. \n\n\n\nFilm Screening will begin at 7:30pm to allow people to break fast for Ramadan. In the meantime\, Taína Asili will share her most recent video “Strong Tree” about the local movement in support of Palestine. \n\n\n\nSOLD OUT\n\n\n\nFilm synopsis\n\n\n\nOver five years\, a Palestinian-Israeli collective of directors captured footage of Masafer Yatta residents in the West Bank and their struggle\, survival\, and death in the face of the Israeli military and settlers\, as they witnessed the destruction of their homes and schools and were forced to leave their villages with nowhere to go. Yet No Other Land is more than a powerful work of cinéma vérité; it is the story of the growing friendship between Palestinian activist Basel Adra and Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham\, both united by harrowing circumstances and one fragile idea: that through cinema and resistance\, one can (perhaps) imagine a space of peace and freedom that never existed in their lives. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNo Other Land is an award winning documentary\, including the winner of the 2025 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature award and the 2024 Berlinale Best Documentary award.  \n\n\n\nPanelists:\n\n\n\nHana’ is a farmer and beekeeper\, who just returned home to the Capital District after spending two months in Palestine. Faris is a member of the Palestine Narrative Project\, working to educate the Capital Region on the Palestinian cause and inspire people to work towards Palestinian liberation. \n\n\n\nKeren Carmeli is a member of the Albany chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace and the Palestinian Rights Committee. She is an anti-Zionist Israeli-American who was raised in occupied Palestine\, and draws on her family’s Holocaust survival story to inform her dedication to the liberation of Palestine”. \n\n\n\nModerator: Jude Abu Zaineh is a Palestinian-Canadian interdisciplinary artist-curator working across art\, food\, science\, and technology studies. DESCRIPTION:Learn to make tinctures! Tinctures are potent alcohol based herbal remedies that are taken internally to support wellbeing. You will learn best methods for making tinctures from fresh and dried plants\, including the techniques of maceration and percolation\, with a touch of plant chemistry and math. You will go home with the skills to stock your own home apothecary this coming season with all your favorite herbal tinctures. \n\n\n\nLimited spots available. Registration with a $10 refundable deposit is required to hold your place. Donations recommended on a sliding scale of $0 – 30; no one will be turned away for lack of funds. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the facilitator\n\n\n\nRebecca Hein is a community herbalist and urban farmer. Founder and owner of Underground Alchemy\, she has been making herbal remedies grown on what were vacant lots in Albany’s South End since 2011. Her work is driven by a desire to connect people and plants\, support community health and empowerment\, and position herbalism in the struggle for accessible healthcare. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis series is facilitated by herbalists affiliated with the People’s Health Sanctuary Community Apothecary who are volunteering their time and sharing information for educational purposes. None of the remedies shared in these workshops are intended to diagnose or treat any disease.  \n\n\n\nThe workshop series is held on the second floor of the NATURE Lab building\, which is currently only accessible by a flight of stairs. Dr. Mair was until recently the Adirondack Council’s “Wilderness Campaign Director” responsible for connecting all New Yorkers to the nation’s largest environmental treasure. As a national environmental justice movement pioneer\, founder of Albany’s Haywood Burns Environmental Justice education center\, and activist of the Arbor Hill\, NY community in Albany\, he was also responsible for the creation of the Arbor Hill Environmental Justice Corporation. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to build your own air purifiers using a box fan\, a furnace filter\, and cardboard! Air Justice Lab and Capital Region Clean Air are collaborating for this DIY workshop with enough materials for up to 12 builds!  \n\n\n\nRegistration is REQUIRED for this limited capacity event\, with priority to the immediate neighborhood. High quality masks/respirators (such as N95s) and rapid COVID tests will be required and provided for all attendees. Attendees are welcomed to join the conversation in a constructive setting for the exchange of ideas. \n\n\n\nPre-registration is required for these events with limited admission for an intimate and constructive space for the exchange of ideas.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAtsushi Akera is General Manager and co-founder of Cafe Euphoria\, a transgender/gender non-conforming worker owned cooperative and restaurant located here in downtown Troy. She was formerly a faculty member in the Department of Science and Technology Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She also serves as the Vice President of the Pride Center of the Capital Region’s Board of Directors. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeagon Nolasco (they/them) is the founder and board chair of Collar City Pride\, which provides services and community building to LGBTQIA+ folks in Rensselaer County. Their day job sees them working in Constituent Services and LGBTQIA+ policy at the NYS Senate. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCafe Euphoria is a community space\, and a trans visibility project\, and worker owned cooperative.\n\n\n\nWe’re designed to be a safe haven and radical workplace. The progressive national magazine\, Yes! Traditional genres such as cumbia and bullerengue from the Atlantic Coast\, currulaos from the Pacific Coast as well as joropos of the Colombian Eastern Plains are the point of departure for musical creativity. Lucía’s vocal sophistication is enhanced in genres such as herding songs (cantos de vaquería)\, funeral laments (alabaos) and harvest chants (cantos de zafra) which give the singer the liberty to explore her voice fully. The ensemble also performs songs written for Lucía by composers Iván Benavides and Sebastián Cruz. \n\n\n\nThe quartet\, comprised of guitar\, bass\, drums\, and voice\, generates a unique sound\, allowing each member to explore their instruments\, and making each presentation an incomparable and entertaining experience. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a de-escalation and communication workshop with Celia Kutz. This is part of the Community Care Workshop day on May 17: 12pm Plant Swap\, 2pm De-escalation workshop\, 4pm Cybersecurity workshop.  \n\n\n\nPracticing justice in a world struggling through multiple catastrophes is difficult\, to say the least. Because we need each other we have to build the skills to be with disagreement and disorientation\, within ourselves and our community. Come hear stories\, learn internal de-escalation techniques and gain ways to communicate when things get tense. No promises\, but the hope is you leave a little more grounded and clear about how to be resilient in the midst of this polycrisis. \n\n\n\nCelia Kutz is a facilitator and trainer\, radicalized through the mass mobilization movement in the early 2000’s. She’s been with Training for Change for 16 years training and facilitating thousands of groups across the social justice left. Currently she’s focused on sticky\, tense and disorienting group dynamics\, supporting organizers and movement directors to make embodied decisions. She lives with her dog and partner with the land of the Mohawk and Mohican\, along the banks of the Hudson River\, the Muheakunnk\, The River that Runs Both Ways.
