DESCRIPTION:Join us for a celebration of SUNY Albany Professor David Carpenter’s long career as an environmental advocate!  We’ll be gathering with Dr. Carpenter along with some of his graduate students and colleagues\, as well as representatives of some of the many grassroots organizations who have worked with David over his decades-long career.  Dr. Carpenter will speak\, along with former EPA Region 2 administrator Judith Enck and other local luminaries. We’ll hear an update on the ongoing legal case surrounding Monsanto’s pollution of the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation\, and other local environmental struggles. If you are feeling unwell or have any symptoms of illness please stay home and rest. \n\n\n\n\n\nJudith Enck and Dr. David Carpenter at Dunn Landfill\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Carpenter is a public health physician whose current position is Director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University at Albany\, as well as Professor of Environmental Health Sciences within the School of Public Health at the University at Albany.  After receiving his MD degree from Harvard Medical School he chose a career of research and public health.  After research positions at the National Institute of Mental Health and the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute\, he came to Albany in 1980 as the Director of the Wadsworth Center for Laboratories and Research of the New York State Department of Health\, the third largest public health laboratory in the US after NIH and CDC.  In an effort to build ties to an academic program\, he initiated efforts to create a partnership between the New York State Department of Health and the University at Albany\, resulting in the creation of the School of Public Health in 1985.  He was then appointed as the founding Dean of the School of Public Health\, a position he held until 1998 when he became the Director of the Institute of Health and the Environment.  In 2011 the Institute for Health and the Environment was declared a Collaborating Centre of the World Health Organization in Environmental Health.  While his early research was study of animal and cellular models of brain function\, his more recent studies have focused on environmental causes of human disease.  He has more than 485 peer-reviewed publications. \n\n\n\n\n\nPhotos from the event\n\n\n\nBy Robert Cooper \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nphotograph by Caroline Tennant

DESCRIPTION:Where: 2nd floor of the NATURE Lab building\, 3319 6th Avenue. \n\n\n\nJoin us for for a Death Cafe\, an evening of discussions about death and how to make the most of life under the context that there is an end. The discussions will take place as a group and in breakout discussions at People’s Health Sanctuary in NATURE Lab. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt a Death Cafe people\, often strangers\, gather to eat cake\, drink tea and discuss death. Our objective is ‘to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives’. A Death Cafe is a group directed discussion of death with no agenda\, objectives or themes. The dirty sounds of New Orleans brass drive their sound with some influences including Galactic as well as the Dap Kings. You can also find them fronted by Albany’s own JB!! aka Dirty Moses and singer Dali Soto. Their efforts combined help create a funk/rap show that brings the house down. In January 2019 they released their first album\, ‘Astrobeat’ – now available on vinyl and all streaming platforms! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUnd3rstanding is a three-man Hip-Hop group from Upstate New York featuring Sev Statik\, SES Vth\, and Knowle’ge. Individually\, these artists stand as giants in the realm of underground hip-hop\, but collectively\, they form a powerful group with a mission to entertain\, enlighten and embody what it means to be an emcee. The name Und3rstanding alludes to supreme mathematics and the principles of knowledge\, wisdom\, and understanding – a set of teachings that each of the members have learned from and hold dearly.Founded in 2015\, the members of Und3rstanding had quickly become fans of each other and after performing at several events in the Albany area.  It was Sev Statik who tossed out the idea that they should combine talents and “form like Voltron” into a super lyrical squadron.  Knowle’ge and SES Vth agreed\, and from there they began recruiting the soulful boom-bappington master producer himself\, Deborah’s Son\, to produce their project. DESCRIPTION:Hudson Mohawk Magazine (HMM) is radio for the community\, by community volunteers. If you are curious about the radio and have questions\, if you’re interested in getting involved\, or if you need some support in production\, these open hours are a perfect time to come to the main Sanctuary space to work directly with HMM producers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur volunteer HMM producers come with a range of skills and experiences. Many volunteers join with little to no experience. These sessions give support to producers of all levels. This is also an opportunity to train new engineers and hosts.  \n\n\n\nJoin our excellent team of grassroots journalists and report on local stories that interest you. SUMMARY:The Insects are Present
DESCRIPTION:The Insects are Present is a participatory installation by artist Lisa Schonberg that engages with insects and their sound to compose music compositions. Alluding towards Marina Abramović’s 2010 work\, Schonberg’s installation asks audience members to spend an extended time listening to insects in real time\, both through hearing and touch. Schonberg developed this modular system during field research in Oregon\, the Brazilian Amazon\, the Mobile-Tensaw Delta (AL)\, and New York\, adapting recording and playback elements to insects and their sounds at each study site. Participants will be invited to contribute their own sounds to the work in an assertion of our ongoing connection with the insects in our shared living environments. \n\n\n\nThe installation will take place at Ellie Irons’ Lawn (Re)Disturbance Laboratory\, part of NATURE Lab and the Sanctuary’s Eco-Art Trail in North Troy. Participants are encouraged to sign up for a listening session in advance at this form (or click the registration button below). Informed by her background in entomology\, Schonberg is interested in how listening to cryptic sound can reveal and challenge assumptions about insects and other overlooked soundmakers. Since 2017 she has been collaborating with Brazilian entomologists on ATTA (Amplifying the Tropical Ants)\, a project investigating ant bioacoustics in the Amazon. Her other recent work includes investigations of old-growth forests in Oregon\, endangered Hawaiian Hylaeus bees\, mushrooms\, and plastics. Schonberg’s compositions are performed by percussion ensembles Secret Drum Band\, Antenna\, & UAU\, and presented as solo performance and installation. Schonberg presents workshops on methods for environmental listening\, including workshops with Allie ES Wist for their collaboration Sensory Kinship of the Third Kind. She is the author of Text Scores for Getting to Know the Invertebrates\, The Hylaeus Project\, and the The DIY Guide to Drums\, and has presented work or performed at FILE Festival (BR)\, the Pompidou\, the Brooklyn Museum\, Bosque da Ciencia (BR)\, the American Museum of Natural History\, and Museo Reina Sofia (SP). She has developed her work through residencies at Labverde\, the Banff Centre\, Pioneerworks\, HJ Andrews Experimental Station\, and Signal Fire.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for StoryHarvest–– a festival to celebrate the harvest with music\, food\, and community! Corn will be a source of food\, games\, crafts\, and jokes in this family-friendly celebration with three-time Grammy award winning musician Bill Miller of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans sharing music and stories on his ancestral homeland at Freedom Square.   \n\n\n\nActivities will include corn arts & crafts\, face painting\, and a bicycle-powered mill. Over the entirety\, Miller has produced over a dozen albums\, received three GRAMMY® Awards\, numerous Native American Music Awards & Association (NAMA) awards (including a “Lifetime Achievement” Award) and led Wisconsin’s La Crosse Symphony Orchestra. Overcoming the hardships felt by the global community in 2020 during the COVID-19 Pandemic\, 2021 finds the living legend living life— stronger with a renewed focus on healing through song\, art\, and speaking — as he prepares to release a fresh EP. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is part of the Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail project\, funded by a National Endowment for the Arts Our Town creative placemaking grant\, connecting Indigenous legacy to an urban nature walk on 6th Avenue. The Eco-Art Trail weaves a journey from Freedom Square on 101st St south to our newest community platform\, NATURE Lab (with Citizen Science Laboratory and People’s Health Sanctuary) and on our growing permaculture forest reaching south to Glen St. \n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail is dedicated to celebrating the sacred Mohican soils we are honored to tend. We are beneficiaries of millennia of human history unfolding in a majestic river valley\, where the land has been nurtured by Indigenous hands and traumatized through industrial development and systemic inequity.  Embedding art\, ancestral history\, culture and local and Indigenous artist presentations\, the trail engages our rich local ecology and the struggle for environmental justice\, while offering settler communities insight into the history and living legacy of Indigenous peoples on these lands. \n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail is located on a block-wide environmental campus in North Central Troy\, near the Northern tip of the Mahicannituck (Hudson) River Estuary—just a few hundred feet from Federal Lock One of the Erie Canal. Part of the river’s historic flood plain and home to significant Mohican cultural sites\, this neighborhood is also one of the poorest in New York State\, with a long history of disinvestment and environmental contamination. This community gathering is for all people who love the Sanctuary\, who love art and creative placemaking\, and who love the Hudson River! This celebration marks the moment that the monumental sculpture Ilopango\, the Volcano that Left by Beatriz Cortez\, onboard the John J. Harvey fireboat\, passes through Troy’s Federal Lock and Dam along the Mahicannituck at the Northern tip of the Hudson River Estuary\, just a block away from the Sanctuary’s campus.  \n\n\n\nAs part of our year long Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail project\, we honor Beatriz Cortez’s Ilopango\, the Volcano that Left\, speak with the curators about Cortez’s project and Shifting Center Exhibition at EMPAC\, and walk together on the Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail to celebrate creative placemaking on the Hudson in Troy! \n\n\n\nMore about the Celebration activities\n\n\n\nPlease register if you wish to attend the Troy reception. And feel free to join us as curators and community make a short drive to the Waterford Harbor Visitor Center to welcome Beatriz Cortez and the filmmakers personally!  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\nVolunteer Application\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Beatriz Cortez\n\n\n\n\n\nBeatriz Cortez (b. 1970\, San Salvador\, El Salvador; lives and works in Los Angeles) received an MFA in Art from the California Institute of the Arts and a Ph.D. in Literature and Cultural Studies from Arizona State University. Cortez’s work explores simultaneity\, life in different temporalities and different versions of modernity\, particularly in relation to memory and loss in the aftermath of war and the experience of migration\, and in relation to imagining possible futures. \n\n\n\nAbout Ilopango\, the Volcano that Left\n\n\n\nJoin in dialogue with curators Vic Brooks\, Nida Ghouse and Eric Booker\, as well as Kathryn TeBordo\, Catherine Abbott and Katherine Adams from EMPAC\, to learn about Ilopango\, the Volacno that Left and the Shifting Center Exhibition.  \n\n\n\nWhat does it mean to recognize that sculptures\, like continents and mountains\, are on the move? Beatriz Cortez’s sculpture Ilopango\, the Volcano that Left departs Storm King Art Center\, the site of its current exhibition\, to embark on a three-day performative journey along the Hudson River to EMPAC–Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center. Aboard the John J. Harvey fireboat\, the steel volcano travels north up the tidal estuary via Kingston to Troy to be installed in a concert hall for its second site of exhibition\, leaving behind a sculptural footprint in its wake: an absence amidst other artworks on Museum Hill. \n\n\n\nThe volcano can be witnessed as it sails upriver from various viewing points on both shores and online through a livestream. The public is also invited to visit when it docks for the night at the Hudson River Maritime Museum in Kingston and to gather in welcoming the volcano when it passes through the Federal Lock and Dam near The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy. A month prior to the journey\, for the Parsons Fine Art Visiting Artists Lecture co-organized by the Vera List Center at the New School\, Cortez will chart the conceptual content borne by notions of movement and impermanence.  \n\n\n\nIn making this passage from a sculpture park to a performing arts center\, Ilopango\, the Volcano that Left proposes a line of questioning: What does it mean to consider sculpture as time-based? And can it become a performance? In (re)enacting a refusal to remain an object transfixed in a landscape\, it exposes the fact that sculptures always already carry time\, and are the ultimate records of their own making. When we encounter a sculpture as an artwork in an exhibition space\, how might we apprehend the histories\, geographies\, and processes that are latent within it? \n\n\n\nIts journey to EMPAC will be broadcast live by the presenting partners October 27 & 29. DESCRIPTION:PHS is offering the first People’s Health Community Acupuncture as part of our Healing Days.  Community acupuncture is a grassroots model to increase access to acupuncture. It is done in a group setting (about 5 people at a time) in comfortable recliners and uses points mainly in your hands and feet.   \n\n\n\nThis is our first session\, the last appointment of the day is at 3:10p. Walk-ins are welcome\, if there is space. Please wear comfy clothes and drink plenty of water!  Acupuncture will be performed by Xavier\, a NYS certified physician-acupuncturist. He was trained in a Japanese style formulated by Kiko Matsumoto through the Acumed program. \n\n\n\n\nSign up here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is acupuncture?\n\n\n\nJohn Hopkins Medicine writes\, acupuncture is the practice of penetrating the skin with thin\, solid\, metallic needles which are then activated through gentle and specific movements of the practitioner’s hands or with electrical stimulation.  \n\n\n\nAcupuncture is part of the ancient practice of Traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe the human body has more than 2\,000 acupuncture points connected by pathways or meridians. These pathways create an energy flow (Qi\, pronounced “chee”) through the body that is responsible for overall health. Disruption of the energy flow can cause disease. By applying acupuncture to certain points\, it is thought to improve the flow of Qi\, thereby improving health. It is done in a group setting\, mainly using points mainly in your hands\, feet\, and ears.  In the US\, specifically at the Lincoln Hospital Detox Program in the Bronx\, the practice was brought over in the 70’s from China by Black Panther and Young Lord activists.  It has been refined and spread through the work of the Peoples Organization of Community Acupuncture (POCA).

FEMeeting 2023 Taos and TTT2023 Malta Scientific & Artistic Committee member. Journal of Science and Technology of the Arts (CITAR) Reviewer. Eight Art Residency Programs: Mexico\, Bolivia\, USA\, and Canada. She has exhibited her work\, organized exhibitions\, and given lectures in Peru\, Mexico\, Bolivia\, Argentina\, Spain\, Cuba\, Chile\, Norway\, Colombia\, Brazil\, South Africa\, Australia\, Greece\, Ireland\, Portugal\, Austria\, and the USA. Born\, lives and dreams in/from Lima\, Peru\, she has a M.A. Digital Arts\, UPF\, BCN\, Spain.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPraba Pilar is a diasporic Colombian artist disrupting the overwhelmingly passive participation in the contemporary ‘cult of the techno-logic.’ Over the last two decades Pilar has presented cultural productions integrating performance art\, live work\, digital works\, video\, electronic installations\, radio programming\, street theatre\, invisible theatre\, websites and writing. These projects have traveled widely to museums\, galleries\, universities\, performance festivals\, conferences\, public streets\, political meetings\, bookstores\, bars\, and radio airwaves around the world. She interweaves critical listening practices with acoustic ecology\, improvisation and technology to craft immersive sound engagements and creative research sites that question circulations of power within human and nonhuman systems. As an electroacoustic flutist and sound artist she’s performed and exhibited internationally\, has a large discography\, with releases on Columbia Records\, Beggars Banquet\, Geffin\, V2\, and her research has been published in journals and edited volumes. Thorpe has been granted several residencies and awards for her artistry and research\, such as the Frog Peak Collective Award for innovative research in technology\, a Gold Record from the Recording Industry Association of Americas\, as well as grants from the MAP Fund\, NYSCA\, New Music USA and Harvestworks Digital Media Foundation. Thorpe holds an MFA in Electronic Music & Media from Mills College\, a Ph.D. in Integrative Studies from the University of California\, San Diego\, and is a certified Deep Listening Instructor\, having studied in depth with pioneering composer and Deep Listening Founder Pauline Oliveros. Most recently she was a Mellon Fellow and member of the Society of Fellows at Columbia University\, and is currently Assistant Professor of Sound Studies at Manhattan College. She also remains a co-founder and director of TECHNE\, a nonprofit arts-education organization dedicated to dismantling social and cultural barriers in technical learning environments.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStephanie Rothenberg’s interdisciplinary art draws from digital culture\, science and economics to explore symbiotic relationships between human designed systems and biological ecosystems. Moving between real and virtual spaces\, she engages a variety of media platforms that include interactive installation\, drawing\, sculpture\, video and performance. She has exhibited internationally in venues and festivals including MassMOCA (US)\, Sundance Film Festival (US)\, House of Electronic Arts / HeK (CH)\, LABoral (ES)\, Transmediale (DE)\, and ZKM Center for Art & Media (DE). She has received awards from Harpo Foundation\, NYSCA and Creative Capital among others and has participated in numerous residencies including Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace/LMCC and Eyebeam Art and Technology Center in NYC\, Santa Fe Art Institute\, and ZK/U in Berlin. Her work is in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art and has been widely reviewed including Artforum\, Artnet\, The Brooklyn Rail and Hyperallergic. DESCRIPTION:“Spaces of Exception” is a film profiling American Indian reservations alongside Palestinian refugee camps. Join us for a Be The Media! workshop with co-director Matt Peterson prior to the screening of “Spaces of Exception\,” to learn about the process of creating a long-term media project. \n\n\n\n“Spaces of Exception” was filmed from 2014 to 2017 in Arizona\, New Mexico\, New York and South Dakota as well as Lebanon and the West Bank. DESCRIPTION:Join media artist Theo Jean Cuthand for a Be The Media! participatory radio workshop\, to focus on Indigiqueer and ecological issues.  \n\n\n\nUsing improvisational documentary techniques\, the Be The Media! workshop participants will create a short radio play with Theo Jean Cuthand\, loosely inspired by Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds broadcast but based on the colonization of what is now Troy by European Settlers. This workshop will begin with a brief presentation of Cuthand’s work.  \n\n\n\nCuthand’s Sanctuary presentation is sponsored by iEAR Presents\, with NYSCA\, the School of Humanities and EMPAC at RPI\, and the NEA Our Town creative placemaking project Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail\, which connects Indigenous legacy with environmental justice (in partnership with the Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians). The participatory radio play created in this workshop will be featured as a multimedia element on the Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail.  \n\n\n\nHear Theo Jean Cuthand interview with Hudson Mohawk Magazine\n\n\n\nHudson Mohawk Magazine · Participatory Radio Workshop Based on Welles' "War of the Worlds"\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheo Jean Cuthand was born in Regina\, Saskatchewan\, Canada in 1978\, and grew up in Saskatoon. Since 1995 he has been making short experimental videos and films about sexuality\, madness\, Queer identity and love\, and gender and Indigeneity\, which have screened in festivals internationally. \n\n\n\nHis work has also exhibited at galleries including the MOMA in NYC\, The National Gallery in Ottawa\, and The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. He completed his BFA majoring in Film and Video at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2005\, and his Masters of Arts in Media Production at Toronto Metropolitan University in 2015. He has also written three feature screenplays and has performed at Live At The End Of The Century in Vancouver\, Queer City Cinema’s Performatorium in Regina\, and 7a*11d in Toronto. In 2017 he won the Hnatyshyn Foundation’s REVEAL Indigenous Art Award. He is a Whitney Biennial 2019 artist. He is of Plains Cree and Scots descent\, a member of Little Pine First Nation\, and currently resides in Toronto\, Canada. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis is the second night of a series of two events in a collaboration between the Arts Department and EMPAC at RPI\, by Plains Cree and Scots artist Theo Jean Cuthand. At EMPAC on May 29\, Cuthand presents an artist talk and screening that explores his work and process through an Indigiqueer lens. As an advocate for Native equity and parity\, Davids places Native voices front and center. He originated and co-founded the award-winning Native American Composer Apprentice Project (NACAP)\, championing indigenous youth to compose their own written music. He uses indigenous instruments\, including handmade quartz flutes\, and pens performable notations that are themselves visual works of art. Davids is co-director of the Lenape Center in Manhattan\, and is enrolled in the Stockbridge-Munsee Community.
