SUMMARY:Frederick Douglass and the Power of the Black Archives
DESCRIPTION:A community reading of “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” and collecting for the Black Experience in the Adirondacks\n\n\n\nJoin us in creating Black history archives in a community reading\, discussion\, and collection. Together we will collectively read Frederick Douglass’ What to the Slave is the Fourth of July before a conversation on storytelling and the importance of recorded Black history\, featuring speakers from the Underground Railroad Education Center and the Adirondack Experience museum. You will also have the opportunity to contribute memorabilia to the soon-to-be permanent exhibition The Black Experience in the Adirondacks at the Adirondack Experience museum. There will be a hybrid event on February 18 to give insight into the collection in Gathering Stories: Black Experiences in the Adirondacks. \n\n\n\n\n\nFrederick Douglass’ legacy demonstrates the importance of archives. Using speeches\, photography\, and print media\, this man who was born into slavery became one of the most important figures in Black history. Douglass gave speaking tours\, was the most photographed man in America during the 19th century\, and wrote books and published The North Star press. We know so much about him and his experience because of his archive\, and participants will leave a legacy of their own with archive opportunities during this event.  \n\n\n\nAttendees will collectively read Frederick Douglass’ abolitionist speech “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” (which will be recorded and archived in audio and video form followed by a panel discussion which will include the Underground Railroad Education Center as well as Charles Clark III\, the Project Curator for the exhibition The Black Experience in the Adirondacks. The community will then have the opportunity to contribute memorability connected to the Black experience in the Adirondacks to an upcoming exhibition. \n\n\n\n\n\nA portrait of Frederick Douglass created in 1879\n\n\n\n\n\nFeaturing: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLacey Wilson\, Teen Museum Studies Program Manager of Underground Railroad Education CenterLacey was born in Washington DC and has spent 10 years in public history\, leading tours\, managing sites\, and engaging with oral histories and local communities. Today\, she plans and implements a museum studies program for teenagers at the Underground Railroad Education Center in addition to sitting on the advocacy and nominations committees with the National Council of Public History. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPaul & Mary Liz Stewart\, Co-Founders of Underground Railroad Education Center (UREC)UREC is a non-profit organization which grew out of a research project on the Underground Railroad in the Capital Region by Paul and Mary Liz Stewart. Their work uncovered the voices and stories of people written out of this history. Together\, these voices provide a different accounting of Underground Railroad activism and change the American narrative. \n\n\n\n\n\nSince its incorporation in 2003\, Underground Railroad Education Center has created a strong program of education and research that celebrates and preserves the story of the Underground Railroad in Albany and the Capital Region and its relationship with us today. URHPCR has identified the key primary and secondary figures and their activities\, and has developed a general outline of the local history of the movement. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCharles Clark III\, curator of The Black Experience in the Adirondacks  Charles employs a Pan-Africanist methodology\, enriched by material cultural approach\, to transform exhibition making in museums. His work addresses ethno cultural erasure and brings to light marginalized narratives within art history. His approach not only enhances the representation of diverse voices but also redefines the role of museums as spaces for critical dialogue and cultural exploration. \n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2027\, the Adirondack Experience\, the Museum on Blue Mountain Lake\, will open The Black Experience in the Adirondacks\, a new permanent\, interactive exhibition. This exhibition will comprehensively explore the history of Black people in the region\, from their important and well-documented role in the settlement and development of the Adirondacks to current efforts ensuring an inclusive community and enriching the region’s recreational opportunities.

DESCRIPTION:PHS is offering the first People’s Health Community Acupuncture as part of our Healing Days.  Community acupuncture is a grassroots model to increase access to acupuncture. It is done in a group setting (about 5 people at a time) in comfortable recliners and uses points mainly in your hands and feet.   \n\n\n\nThe last appointment of the day is at 3:10p. Walk-ins are welcome\, if there is space. Please wear comfy clothes and drink plenty of water!  Acupuncture will be performed by Xavier\, a NYS certified physician-acupuncturist. He was trained in a Japanese style formulated by Kiko Matsumoto through the Acumed program. \n\n\n\n\nSign up here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is acupuncture?\n\n\n\nJohn Hopkins Medicine writes\, acupuncture is the practice of penetrating the skin with thin\, solid\, metallic needles which are then activated through gentle and specific movements of the practitioner’s hands or with electrical stimulation.  \n\n\n\nAcupuncture is part of the ancient practice of Traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe the human body has more than 2\,000 acupuncture points connected by pathways or meridians. These pathways create an energy flow (Qi\, pronounced “chee”) through the body that is responsible for overall health. Disruption of the energy flow can cause disease. By applying acupuncture to certain points\, it is thought to improve the flow of Qi\, thereby improving health. Read more \n\n\n\nMore about community acupuncture\n\n\n\nCommunity acupuncture is a grassroots model designed to increase access to acupuncture. It is done in a group setting\, mainly using points mainly in your hands\, feet\, and ears.  In the US\, specifically at the Lincoln Hospital Detox Program in the Bronx\, the practice was brought over in the 70’s from China by Black Panther and Young Lord activists.  It has been refined and spread through the work of the Peoples Organization of Community Acupuncture (POCA).

Davids\, who embraces Indigenous themes and subjects in his music\, considers Cooper’s ignorance of native culture in “The Last of the Mohicans” for this delightful work for string quartet\, featuring members of Albany Symphony. This event is featured as part of the Sanctuary for Independent Media’s Freedom Fest in collaboration with the American Music Festival. Join us at the Sanctuary Main Space for the culmination of our multi-year NEA Our Town Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail Project! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrent Michael Davids is an internationally celebrated Mohican and Munsee-Lenape composer\, and self-described music warrior. As an advocate for Native equity and parity\, Davids places Native voices front and center. He originated and co-founded the award-winning Native American Composer Apprentice Project (NACAP)\, championing indigenous youth to compose their own written music. He uses indigenous instruments\, including handmade quartz flutes\, and pens performable notations that are themselves visual works of art. Davids is co-director of the Lenape Center in Manhattan\, and is enrolled in the Stockbridge-Munsee Community. His composing career spans nearly five decades\, with countless awards and commissions from America’s most celebrated organizations and ensembles. \n\n\n\n“When we collaborate and experiment in song\, we are discovering life benefits\, not simply musical ones. DESCRIPTION:Join media artist Theo Jean Cuthand for a Be The Media! participatory radio workshop\, to focus on Indigiqueer and ecological issues.  \n\n\n\nUsing improvisational documentary techniques\, the Be The Media! workshop participants will create a short radio play with Theo Jean Cuthand\, loosely inspired by Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds broadcast but based on the colonization of what is now Troy by European Settlers. This workshop will begin with a brief presentation of Cuthand’s work.  \n\n\n\nCuthand’s Sanctuary presentation is sponsored by iEAR Presents\, with NYSCA\, the School of Humanities and EMPAC at RPI\, and the NEA Our Town creative placemaking project Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail\, which connects Indigenous legacy with environmental justice (in partnership with the Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians). The participatory radio play created in this workshop will be featured as a multimedia element on the Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail.  \n\n\n\nHear Theo Jean Cuthand interview with Hudson Mohawk Magazine\n\n\n\nHudson Mohawk Magazine · Participatory Radio Workshop Based on Welles' "War of the Worlds"\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheo Jean Cuthand was born in Regina\, Saskatchewan\, Canada in 1978\, and grew up in Saskatoon. Since 1995 he has been making short experimental videos and films about sexuality\, madness\, Queer identity and love\, and gender and Indigeneity\, which have screened in festivals internationally. \n\n\n\nHis work has also exhibited at galleries including the MOMA in NYC\, The National Gallery in Ottawa\, and The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. He completed his BFA majoring in Film and Video at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2005\, and his Masters of Arts in Media Production at Toronto Metropolitan University in 2015. He has also written three feature screenplays and has performed at Live At The End Of The Century in Vancouver\, Queer City Cinema’s Performatorium in Regina\, and 7a*11d in Toronto. In 2017 he won the Hnatyshyn Foundation’s REVEAL Indigenous Art Award. He is a Whitney Biennial 2019 artist. He is of Plains Cree and Scots descent\, a member of Little Pine First Nation\, and currently resides in Toronto\, Canada. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis is the second night of a series of two events in a collaboration between the Arts Department and EMPAC at RPI\, by Plains Cree and Scots artist Theo Jean Cuthand. At EMPAC on May 29\, Cuthand presents an artist talk and screening that explores his work and process through an Indigiqueer lens. He co-directed the documentary features “Scenes from a Revolt Sustained” (2014) and “Spaces of Exception” (with Malek Rasamny\, 2018)\, and co-edited the books “In the Name of the People” (2018) and “The Mohawk Warrior Society” (2022). \n\n\n\nLayla Aburas Khafaga  is a first-generation Palestinian American. Her father was displaced in the 1967 conflict\, and her mother’s family in the 1948 Nakba. Layla embraces her Palestinian identity proudly\, striving to preserve its rich culture. Leaving the corporate world\, she founded a Middle Eastern Bakery to share her culture with the community. Layla also played a pivotal role in founding the Albany Muslim Advocacy Coalition (AMAC)\, advocating for unity and social justice. She amplifies unheard voices\, aiming for positive change and representation in her community. \n\n\n\nKanerahtiio Roger Jock is a Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) Bear Clan Leader from the Akwesasne Reserve who carries a vision of return for his people to their ancestral lands in the Mohawk Valley of New York. Kanerahtiio has taught cultural awareness all over the U.S. for over 40 years as part of the White Roots of Peace Movement. He worked as an ironworker and foreman for several decades and is a leader in land and sovereign rights in the Akwesasne region. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to learn more about how this film was made? DESCRIPTION:Hudson Mohawk Magazine (HMM) is radio for the community\, by community volunteers. If you are curious about the radio and have questions\, if you’re interested in getting involved\, or if you need some support in production\, these open hours are a perfect time to come to the main Sanctuary space to work directly with HMM producers.  \n\n\n\n3:00-5:00pm: drop by to ask questions\, get help\, use the radio studio5:00-6:00pm: work with the hosts to get Hudson Mohawk Magazine ready for the air6:00-7:00pm: sit in the studio and watch the live recording and airing7:07-8:30pm: join the weekly hybrid programming meeting where the schedule for the week ahead is put together by an incredible team of volunteers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur volunteer HMM producers come with a range of skills and experiences. Many volunteers join with little to no experience. These sessions give support to producers of all levels. This is also an opportunity to train new engineers and hosts.  \n\n\n\nJoin our excellent team of grassroots journalists and report on local stories that interest you. DESCRIPTION:Join us to honor the passing of Ilopango\, the Volcano that Left and celebrate creative place-making along the Mahicannituck (Hudson River)! This community gathering is for all people who love the Sanctuary\, who love art and creative placemaking\, and who love the Hudson River! This celebration marks the moment that the monumental sculpture Ilopango\, the Volcano that Left by Beatriz Cortez\, onboard the John J. Harvey fireboat\, passes through Troy’s Federal Lock and Dam along the Mahicannituck at the Northern tip of the Hudson River Estuary\, just a block away from the Sanctuary’s campus.  \n\n\n\nAs part of our year long Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail project\, we honor Beatriz Cortez’s Ilopango\, the Volcano that Left\, speak with the curators about Cortez’s project and Shifting Center Exhibition at EMPAC\, and walk together on the Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail to celebrate creative placemaking on the Hudson in Troy! \n\n\n\nMore about the Celebration activities\n\n\n\nPlease register if you wish to attend the Troy reception.  We will meet at The Sanctuary by 3PM Sunday for informal introductions the curators\, live broadcast from the boat\, conversation and light refreshments from the Mediterranean Grill.   \n\n\n\nEarly arrival is recommended. We will then go together by land to the bank of the Hudson River near the Federal Lock and Dam (at the West end of Glen St. outside the Federal Lock Gate) to view the sculpture’s arrival. The sculpture is expected at the lock at approximately 3:45PM. We will then return to the Sanctuary\, to watch the live broadcast as  Ilopango\, the Volcano that Left onboard the John J. Harvey fireboat journeys to Lock 2 at the Waterford Pier. And feel free to join us as curators and community make a short drive to the Waterford Harbor Visitor Center to welcome Beatriz Cortez and the filmmakers personally!  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\nVolunteer Application\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Beatriz Cortez\n\n\n\n\n\nBeatriz Cortez (b. 1970\, San Salvador\, El Salvador; lives and works in Los Angeles) received an MFA in Art from the California Institute of the Arts and a Ph.D. in Literature and Cultural Studies from Arizona State University. Cortez’s work explores simultaneity\, life in different temporalities and different versions of modernity\, particularly in relation to memory and loss in the aftermath of war and the experience of migration\, and in relation to imagining possible futures. \n\n\n\nAbout Ilopango\, the Volcano that Left\n\n\n\nJoin in dialogue with curators Vic Brooks\, Nida Ghouse and Eric Booker\, as well as Kathryn TeBordo\, Catherine Abbott and Katherine Adams from EMPAC\, to learn about Ilopango\, the Volacno that Left and the Shifting Center Exhibition.  \n\n\n\nWhat does it mean to recognize that sculptures\, like continents and mountains\, are on the move? Beatriz Cortez’s sculpture Ilopango\, the Volcano that Left departs Storm King Art Center\, the site of its current exhibition\, to embark on a three-day performative journey along the Hudson River to EMPAC–Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center. Aboard the John J. Harvey fireboat\, the steel volcano travels north up the tidal estuary via Kingston to Troy to be installed in a concert hall for its second site of exhibition\, leaving behind a sculptural footprint in its wake: an absence amidst other artworks on Museum Hill. \n\n\n\nThe volcano can be witnessed as it sails upriver from various viewing points on both shores and online through a livestream. The public is also invited to visit when it docks for the night at the Hudson River Maritime Museum in Kingston and to gather in welcoming the volcano when it passes through the Federal Lock and Dam near The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy. A month prior to the journey\, for the Parsons Fine Art Visiting Artists Lecture co-organized by the Vera List Center at the New School\, Cortez will chart the conceptual content borne by notions of movement and impermanence.  \n\n\n\nIn making this passage from a sculpture park to a performing arts center\, Ilopango\, the Volcano that Left proposes a line of questioning: What does it mean to consider sculpture as time-based? And can it become a performance? In (re)enacting a refusal to remain an object transfixed in a landscape\, it exposes the fact that sculptures always already carry time\, and are the ultimate records of their own making. When we encounter a sculpture as an artwork in an exhibition space\, how might we apprehend the histories\, geographies\, and processes that are latent within it? \n\n\n\nIts journey to EMPAC will be broadcast live by the presenting partners October 27 & 29. Filmmaker Guillermo Escalón and composer Igor de Gandarias will join the sculpture on its journey\, recording the volcano’s passage for a forthcoming film (2024). \n\n\n\n\nBeatriz Cortez Brings a Volcano to Troy via The Hudson River\n\n\n\n\nMore about the Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail\n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail is dedicated to celebrating the sacred Mohican soils we are honored to tend. We are beneficiaries of millennia of human history unfolding in a majestic river valley\, where the land has been nurtured by Indigenous hands and traumatized through industrial development and systemic inequity. \n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail embeds art\, culture\, history\, and ecology into an urban nature walk on 6th Avenue in North Troy\, weaving a journey from Glen Avenue to 101st Street and Freedom Square on settler lands\, just a block away from the Mahicannituck.  \n\n\n\nThe Stockbridge-Munsee Tribe are in partnership on this project\, which features Stockbridge-Munsee as well as other Indigenous artists and musicians\, historians and storytellers\, eco-artists\, and muralists\, connecting Indigenous wisdom to visions for a future of healing and reparations. \n\n\n\nVisitors will engage with stories of environmental justice\, ecological restoration\, and the living legacy of Indigenous presence on these lands through sculptures\, gardens\, multimedia\, murals\, and live events and workshops. Corn will be a source of food\, games\, crafts\, and jokes in this family-friendly celebration with three-time Grammy award winning musician Bill Miller of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans sharing music and stories on his ancestral homeland at Freedom Square.   \n\n\n\nActivities will include corn arts & crafts\, face painting\, and a bicycle-powered mill. Come and play corn hole\, eat corn\, and participate in the CORNy joke open mic. Initiated back in 2012 by food artist Ellie Markovitch\, we invite you to celebrate with us after a three-year hiatus! Overcoming the hardships felt by the global community in 2020 during the COVID-19 Pandemic\, 2021 finds the living legend living life— stronger with a renewed focus on healing through song\, art\, and speaking — as he prepares to release a fresh EP. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is part of the Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail project\, funded by a National Endowment for the Arts Our Town creative placemaking grant\, connecting Indigenous legacy to an urban nature walk on 6th Avenue. The Eco-Art Trail weaves a journey from Freedom Square on 101st St south to our newest community platform\, NATURE Lab (with Citizen Science Laboratory and People’s Health Sanctuary) and on our growing permaculture forest reaching south to Glen St. \n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail is dedicated to celebrating the sacred Mohican soils we are honored to tend. Embedding art\, ancestral history\, culture and local and Indigenous artist presentations\, the trail engages our rich local ecology and the struggle for environmental justice\, while offering settler communities insight into the history and living legacy of Indigenous peoples on these lands. \n\n\n\nThe Sanctuary Eco-Art Trail is located on a block-wide environmental campus in North Central Troy\, near the Northern tip of the Mahicannituck (Hudson) River Estuary—just a few hundred feet from Federal Lock One of the Erie Canal. Part of the river’s historic flood plain and home to significant Mohican cultural sites\, this neighborhood is also one of the poorest in New York State\, with a long history of disinvestment and environmental contamination.
