StoryHarvest: A Celebration of Art and Food from Seed to Table!

September 23, 2017 @ 3:00 pm 6:00 pm EDT

The Sanctuary for Independent Media’s 7th annual outdoor fall event, cultivating community through art, food, stories and music. Special thanks to the acclaimed Villalobos Brothers, all of our volunteers and community organizations for making this such an inclusive event! Continuing the tradition of extraordinary presentation at Freedom Square, we were excited to feature one of today’s leading contemporary Mexican ensembles. Their original compositions and arrangements masterfully blend and celebrate the richness of Mexican folk music with the intricate harmonies of jazz and classical music. The Villalobos Brothers deliver an intoxicating brew of brilliance, cadence and virtuosity that awaken the senses and mesmerize the listener.

CO-SPONSORS: Unity House of Troy, Inc., Collard City Growers, NATURELab, Troy Bike Rescue, Troy Public Library, League of Women Voters of Rensselaer County, Collar City Ramble, Troy Zero Waste – Troy Compost, Transition Troy, FoodScraps360, First Unitarian Universalist Society of Albany, Capital District Massage, Massages by Rebecca Whitehead from Lux Comfort & Health, The Troy Poetry Mission, Amnesty International Albany, group 361, New Sanctuary for Immigrants (Capital Region), Tivoli Preserve Community Farm, The Arc of Rensselaer County, Upper Hudson Green Party, The Arts Center of the Capital Region, Denison Farms, Troy Boiler Works, Team HERO/The Block Center, Saratoga Apple, Bella Napoli, Photographer Susan B. Anthony and more organizations to come!

A poster for StoryHarvest 2017, featuring a picture of the Villalobos Brothers, a contemporary Mexican music ensemble. The poster also shows a group of people gathering at several tables where food is being served. The poster lists the event time as Saturday, September 23 from 3 to 6 PM at Freedom Square in North Troy.

Thanks to Unity House and Chef Mike, we had free food for the community featuring hamburgers and hot dogs, hot off the barbeque! We celebrated the harvest with fresh food from Collard City Growers and Denison Farms! Delectables prepared by KitchenSanctuary chefs included:

  • Raw: salsa, kale salad, caprese salad
  • Cooked: andouille sausage, seasoned and stewed frijoles negros, mini pizzas, tomato-based stews
  • Soups: boiled greens, fried rice of all sorts & fried green tomatoes
  • Dessert: rhubarb crisp/crumble, tomato cake (sounds weird, but delicious!)
  • And much more!
