ABOUT NITTY SCOTT
Sweet-voiced Afro-Latina rapper Nitty Scott, MC was Michigan-born and Florida-raised before moving to Brooklyn at the age of 17, during her senior year at art school. Her breakthrough came in 2010, when the video for her freestyle over “Monster” went viral. She has performed at the BET hip hop awards and the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival, among others. Through social networking, she generated an online buzz for her freestyles, and garnered even more praise in 2011 when she uploaded a mixtape titled The Cassette Chronicles, a prelude to her Boombox Diaries, Vol. 1 EP, which was scheduled for release that summer and her debut album Art Of Chill in 2014. She followed it up with her second album, Creature!, in 2017. The single off the album, “BBYGRL”, has been proclaimed as a feminist anthem.
Although Scott is basking in the fantastic reception her album is receiving, she’s also quick to recall that she hasn’t always had the creative freedom that she had on Creature!. Earlier in her career, Scott felt pigeonholed and misplaced by record industry veterans, who told her she couldn’t be sexy and intelligent at the same time — a disconnect that inspired Creature!’s examination of Scott’s experiences as a black American, Puerto Rican, bisexual, feminist.
NITTY SCOTT has also produced a short film titled “La Diaspora” featuring ZAP MAMA.
SAMMUS (Enongo Lumumba-Kasongo) is an Ithaca-raised, Philadelphia-based rap artist, producer, PhD candidate in the Department of Science & Technology Studies at Cornell University, and soon-to-be postdoctoral fellow at Brown University. Known as much for her rousing stage presence as she is for her prowess as a beatmaker and lyricist, Sammus has spent the past several years cultivating a strong following of activists, hip hop heads, punks, and self-identified nerds and geeks, among others. As noted by the Los Angeles Times, Sammus “has a gift for getting a message across.”

ABOUT SPIRIT OF THE SUFFRAGETTES
Spirit of the Suffragettes is a summer concert series and community resource fair showcasing women and gender non-conforming musicians from the international to the local. Diverse local organizations will share access to information and tools to support women, who bear a heavy load caring for families against all odds.summer concert series and community resource fair based in North Troy at Freedom Square.
The century-old suffragette message needs to be heard and updated to be made more inclusive. Women, especially women of color, still struggle for equity in their everyday lives. We’ll bring history alive with music, positioning the suffragettes as radical role models to explore gender imbalance throughout society–from music festivals to single mother households in low-wealth communities.
The Spirit of the Suffragettes is an 8-week summer concert series and Women’s Resource Fair celebrating the history of radical historical activists through an updated and more racially/economically inclusive lens. We’re presenting female and gender non-conforming musicians (predominantly women of color) alongside a resource fair highlighting the organizations and opportunities that support women and families in our extremely low-wealth neighborhood.
