Juneteenth! With Shokazoba and The Ameros

June 16, 2012 @ 3:00 pm 7:00 pm EDT

Join us for the last event of our Spring 2012 season–a spectacular free show to mark the Juneteenth holiday! There’ll be lots of music, food, pedal-powered smoothies, bike and helmet decorating, and more as we celebrate the struggle for freedom, equality, culture and community, and commemorate the day two years after the end of the Civil War when slaves in Texas finally learned that they were free. A luta continua… The sizzling Afrobeat big band Shokazoba performs outdoors in Freedom Square (101st Street at the intersection of 5th and 6th Avenues) to headline our observance of Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Also on the bill, The Heavenly Echoes Gospel Singers, The Ameros, and S.K.A.T.E.
