African Film Fest: “Dôlè (Dollar)” and “Africains poids moyens (African Middleweights)”

May 4, 2006 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm EDT

In director Imanga Ivunga’s Dôlè (Dollar) (2000), the action takes place in Libreville, the capital city of Gabon, where four street kids scrape a living as a gang. Mougler, the unwilling hero of this story, finds his life hard to bear, between an ailing mother and an absent, alcoholic father. Yet, the four friends continue to hold on to their dreams. But Mougler, more and more concerned about his mother’s health, decides to urge the gang on by raiding a cash game kiosk. Jury prize winner at Cannes Junior (2000) and Carthage (2000). In Africains poids moyens (African Middleweights), directed by Daniel Cattier (2002) the Belgian Congo is on the eve of Independence. A young Congolese boxer, Samwa, and his older brother, Nourou, arrive in Brussels for the final of the Afro-European Middleweight Championship to fight against the Belgian title holder. Looking to avoid a Congolese victory, the Belgian organizers order Samwa to “dive” to the floor during the final. Nourou believes that this is an opportunity for Belgian passports and a chance to escape their miserable lives for good, but Samwa has other ideas. Co-Sponsored with the Art Department of RPI and by iEAR Presents!
