In this two day workshop, we will come together as a community to learn about mosaic construction with recycled materials. Participants will work on a mosaic from conception to completion.
Zagar will teach the arts of breaking tile, cutting mirror, gluing tile, and grouting. While learning the Zagar mosaic-making technique, students participate in the beautification of the local North Troy neighborhood through the completion of a permanent, public mosaic mural at Freedom Square.
Through decades of creating artwork on a grand, public scale, Isaiah Zagar has helped shape Philadelphia into a thriving creative community. A Philadelphia legend, Zagar has covered more than 50,000 square feet of the city with stunning mosaic murals created from recycled broken bottles and other found objects. The Magic Garden, the fantastical home base for his mosaic workshops, is a labyrinth of glass bottles, bicycle wheels, discarded ceramic plates, hand-made tiles, and shards of mirror that form walls and tunnels, as well as decorative mosaics that even feature poetry!
HOW TO BE INVOLVED:
The Media Sanctuary is taking reservations for participation in Isaiah Zagar's two-day workshop at mediasanctuary.org/workshopregistration. Please consider donating according to your means.
If you have a youth or community group that is interested in the workshop, but is not able to commit to the entire weekend, do not hesitate to call the Media Sanctuary at 518-272-2390 so that we can find a way to accommodate you.
Volunteers will be needed before, during, and after the workshop to help prepare and clean up the space, provide tech support, and distribute brochures and flyers about the event in the surrounding area. If you would like to share a skill, or simply share your time, with Found Art in North Troy, consider filling out our volunteer application form.
Grout! Rags! Sponges! Broken tiles of all shapes and sizes! Interesting pieces of the world around you, to re-purpose and reuse! These are all things we need for the decoration of the Freedom Square Art Stage. See the attached .pdf file for a more complete list of the materials that will make the Stage a glowing success. All donations, monetary or material, are tax-deductible.
Do you write, shoot, Tweet, or know people who know people? If you are interested in Found Art in North Troy, let others know through any medium you use to communicate wonderful things to the world. While this art project is grounded in North Troy, we hope to engage voices and participants from other communities. It's not public art unless everyone is given a chance to chime in!
