Youth Media Sanctuary At Troy KIPP

Youth Media Sanctuary participants have been active at Troy KIPP (Formerly Troy Prep)! Initiated in the fall of 2019 as “Media Club,” Youth Media Sanctuary develops skills in audio journalism through hands-on production. Participants not only take control over the mic, but as well as the narrative. Their pieces are broadcasted on the Hudson Mohawk Magazine and via our social media.

Youth Media Sanctuary is a collaboration between The Sanctuary for Independent Media, Troy KIPP School District, and Troy Savings Bank Music Hall Corp.. Our curriculum was designed to enhance learning and success teaching:

  • Community Engagement
  • Communication
  • Creative writing
  • Interviewing
  • Investigative journalism
  • Leadership
  • Professional audio recording
  • Script writing
  • Research methods

Youth Media Sanctuary continues our long-standing commitment to “Be the Media!” and directly supports the Sanctuary’s mission by using art, science, and participatory action to promote social and environmental justice, and freedom of creative expression.

Jody Cowan led the group to tell their own stories. By giving the youth tools, resources, and light direction, the participants of this club are reporting on the important stories around them and learning to ask critical questions for quality reporting.
