SANCTUARY SUMMER MEDIA CAMP
July 28 - August 1, 2008
WHAT: A free week-long summer camp for the youth of North Troy, running Monday, July 28th through August 1, 2008 from 9 AM - noon for 5 days, with free breakfast (8:30 AM) and free lunch (noon), plus activities with computers, video, bikes, poetry, dance, food sculptures and more!
HOW: Space is limited to 25 participants between the ages of 8 and 18; pre-register by contacting us or calling (518) 207-6264 to reserve a spot!
WHERE: AME Zion Church 189 Fifth Avernue (corner of 103rd Street) North Troy, NY WHO: Children and communities from North Troy and beyond! A project of Media Alliance with co-sponsors: Nutrition Consortium of NY State Summer Food Service program AME Zion Church Holy Serenity Church of God in Christ Honest Weight Food Coop NAACP Troy Bike Rescue 518 Positive Reinforcement Funding provided in part by the NY State Council on the Arts and individual donors to The Sanctuary for Independent Media.
ACTIVITIES: In Media Alliance's "ART, MIND and MEDIA" Animation Workshop, young people have a voice and develop “IT” age survival skills. This 3 day workshop mixes production with media literacy, completing with a premiere screening on the last day of camp! With support from NYSCA Arts and Education. Troy Bike Rescue offers a workshop, removing bikes from the waste stream and getting them back on the streets of North Central Troy. Working together to teach the basics, including basic bike maintenance and fixing a flat, we'll also learn how Troy Bike Rescue is part of an international movement of "community bike projects" - using bicycles to create community. 518 Positive Reinforcement's Kids Dance Workshop will integrate movement, music and creativity, and culminate in a last day performance! With "Honest Weight Food Coop," build a fruit and vegetable sculpture! -- learning about healthy food, washing, cutting, assembling, and eating-- Two tracks: 10 and under, 11-18 years old. Or, 3 tracks: 9 and under, 10- 13, 14-18. And more to be announced!
