www.MediaSanctuary.org Award-winning Chilean filmmaker Patricio Guzman appearing with producer Renate Sachse at The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy NY on 3-20-11 for a q&a following the screening of Nostalgia for the Light. Translated by Daniel Mosquera, director of the Latin American & Caribbean Studies Program at Union College in Schenectady NY. Famed for his political documentaries capturing the history and politics of Chile (The Battle of Chile, Salvador Allende, The Pinochet Case), for the new film Guzman traveled to the Atacama Desert, where the sky is so translucent that it allows astronomers to see right to the boundaries of the universe. It is also a place where the harsh heat of the sun keeps human remains intact, including political prisoners "disappeared" by the Chilean army after the U.S.-supported coup of September 11, 1973.

Tamar Gordon is Associate Professor of Anthropology in LL&C at Rensselaer. Her work focuses on the cultural analysis of contemporary religions and their intersections with local and global modernities; themed environments; Polynesian and American societies; Her graduate courses include Ethnography and Cultural Analysis. Her undergraduate courses include colonial and postcolonial representation; religion, culture and media; and the EMAC Senior Capstone Design class. She is the author of a book in press, Mormons and Modernity in Tonga, and the editor of a collection of articles on ethnic theme parks, also forthcoming, and the director of a documentary film on ethnic theme parks entitled "Global Villages: the Globalization of Ethnic Display."
