"Kids and Guns: Digital Stories"

With violence topping the news and lawmakers weighing various control measures, the role of guns in our society is a hot topic of debate.  This workshop will focus on the North Central Troy community with digital story telling techniques to explore issues of growing up with guns and violence.  

With award-winning filmmaker Jim de Seve. A Be the Media! instructor at the Sanctuary, he is an award-winning documentary producer/ director whose acclaimed documentary, “Tying the Knot,” has played internationally.  He produced extensive work for the mass media industry, and broadcast internationally. He has an MFA from RPI’s Arts Program, and teaches media production at Union College.

Digital storytelling meets DIY cooking as we learn and document how to use a pressure cooker to cook dry beans from scratch and on a budget.  While the beans cook, create media, share, connect!  With food artist and multimedia storyteller Ellie Markovitch.

Be the Media! The Wealth Around You: A Community History Workshop

Documentary filmmaker Louis Massiah, along with the Be the Media! artist/educators, have designed this workshop for community groups serious about creating something! 

Representatives of community groups (youth, adult, elders) bring something -- an object, a poem, photo, music, home movie -- that shows what you're about.

During the workshop, we will create a plan for a short video which shines light on your powers. Historians, media makers and musicians interested in helping to facilitate these projects are welcome!

Join the Youth Media Sanctuary production team as they head intothe field to shoot footage for three short documentaries based in the North Central Troy neighborhood.

These workshops are fast-paced, hands-on experiences geared for youth ages 13-18. Participants will learn the art of conducting and shooting interviews, collecting b-roll footage, and capturing quality sound, to create projects which reflect their personal vision, culture and community.
