YMS Spring 2012: Day 1, Feb. 8

Ready for fun, friends, and creative action in Spring 2012!

After introductions and paperwork, we watched other youth's work for inspiration. Check out: YMS Spring '11 Behind the Scenes!

Then, we started immediately on our new production, with "lap-top" media portraits!

Ellie's Delicious Snack: yogurt and granola:

Granola Recipe:
inspired on Ellie's friend Phyllis Capparelly “Yummy Granola”

4 cups oats
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup shredded coconut,
1/2 cup sliced almonds
1/4 cup chopped walnuts,
1/4 cup cajus
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup maple syrup
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 cup dried fruit (raisins, blueberries, cranberries, etc)

In a large bowl combine the oats, salt, cinnamon, nuts, and coconut.
In another bowl, combine the oil, maple syrup and vanilla. Mix well. Pour the liquids into the oats and toss well. Spread the granola out on a parchment lined baking sheet. (I used my baking mat). Bake the granola in a preheated 300 degrees oven for about 55 minutes. Every 10 minutes or so, give it a stir.

You want the granola to dry out and the nuts to toast goldenbrown. Remove from the oven back to the bowl and add the dried fruit and stir it in.  Let the gran

ola cool and keep in an airtight container.

Most of today's session was spent mind mapping ideas and giving feedback and advice to one another. This is the heart of where conceptual turns into actual and we are pretty excited to start shooting next week!

Sometimes things just sync, like today. As we came in, it just so happened that Brenda Ann Kenneally, photojournalist extraordinare, was just finishing up the last details of the Santuary’s Spring 2012 Facing Change Exhibit...

She took us on a tour!
 brendatour

She showed us concepts like composition, framing, and setting in photography!

We ate some goodness from Ellie (see recipe below*)...

And brainstormed scenes for our very own shorts! brainstorm

*Peanut Butter recipe bar:

1/2 cup butter

2/3 cup superfine sugar

1/2 tsp salt

2 cups creamy peanut butter

1 tsp vanilla extract

6 cups rice puff cereal

1/3 cup chia seeds

2/3 cups old fashion rolled oats

In a large bowl mix melted butter, peanut butter, salt and mix well. Add vanilla, puff cereal, oats and chia seeds. Mix well.

Press firmly into a 11'x13' pan. Cool in the fridge or room temperature. Cut bars--makes 18.

Day 2 started with an introduction to camera and production techniques. Viewing clips of different types of camera angling and movement provided a springboard for YMS 2012 participants to create 1 minutes shorts (for some the first time behind the camera).

We wrapped up today by brainstorming each YMSer’s production ideas. This discussion framed our own 2012 YMS brainstorming wall.
