Great Animation Workshop with School 12 Complete!


In addition to our many activities at The Sanctuary for Independent Media, we also bring media literacy classes to schools throughout the Capital Region! Here’s the warm-up exercise, The Flight of the Butterfly, from a 4-day intensive stop-motion animation workshop with a class of 6th graders at School 12 in South Troy.

Links & Information About the Wafaa Bilal Controversy


  • March 5th: Iraqi-born artist, Wafaa Bilal presents his work, Virtual Jihadi, at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy NY despite complaints from Campus Republicans
  • March 6th: RPI indefinitely suspends Mr. Bilal’s show, and subsequently closes it down.
  • March 7th: The Sanctuary for Independent Media invites Wafaa to reinstall his exhibition and to host a re-opening event.

The Sanctuary for Independent Media is a telecommunications production facility dedicated to community media arts, located in an historic former church at 3361 6th Avenue in north Troy, NY. The Sanctuary hosts screening, production and performance facilities, training in media production and a meeting space for artists, activists and independent media makers of all kinds.
